  • Voorhees Town Center. A dead mall in New Jersey that's been cut in half. And what remains is not faring well at all. Join me for a tour of this mall on an October 2019 afternoon.

Growing up in South Jersey, I remember it as the Echelon Mall. One of the things that was odd was that while it was in a built up area, it was not as close to highways/interstates as other malls in the area, so if you lived in a more rural location, it was easier to get to places like the Deptford Mall.

I grew up in the 70s-80s and it was a fun place to go to. I loved A Shop Called East and the record shops most.

Those location issues are something my hubby & I have talked about for years. We were both big fans of the mall up through the mid 2000s & are pretty saddened its now become just a Boscov's & not much else. The Boscov's itself seems to struggling a bit & I wouldn't be surprised if they close within the next few years.
I'm not sure if a beer garden/court would be a success there. Maybe something like a good bowling alley or if the area weren't already becoming saturated with them something like a Dave & Busters or Round 1 would be more of an attraction in the the future.
I used to think a new movie theater might be a good idea except movie theaters have been fading as an attraction for years even before the current pandemic & social distancing guidelines. And I know plans for a supermarket/grocery store fell through years ago. I'm not sure if any of them are willing to come to the area any more.

Namdar and Mason Asset Management are the same company, btw. As both those 2 mention headquarters in Great Neck, NY. Great Neck is on Long Island east of NYC, for those who don't know.
Ah, and Google confirmed what I had suspected all along in a search: www.google.com/search?q=mason+asset+management&oq=mason+asset&aqs=chrome.0.0j46j0j69i57j0l4.4003j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

When I was in high school (mid 1990s) I was amazed by the size of this mall. By the late 1990s it didn't look so hot. The new exterior construction built in the aughts didn't age well. But, Boscov's is still going strong. Thanks for the video.

Yup I remember it being better. Hell it even had a movie theater at that time and better stores. Now its on its way out sadly and already half gone for development.

Loved it. Very peaceful. The open space with the chairs and palm trees was beautiful.

I remember Exhilarama and the movie theater outside the area where the food court is. It was a good mall and I miss it in that nostalgic dead mall way. Love the library across the street too. Boscovs was a christmas shopping destination. The mall was dying back in 06 when I left NJ. Sad. Still have alot of good memories.

Interesting space. I love the pole lights by the entrance (with multiple clear globes in them). This reminds me a lot of some of the fixtures at Governor’s Square, in Tallahaseee.

I use to go to the neurologist in this mall, definitely took a while to get to from 295. It was in 2017 before the Macy's closed. Its looks like nothing much has changed since then. I actually got rid of a few old cell phones in the ECO ATM you showed. Retail is dying the only thing that will save it is stores that have a wide selection (I need this item today) and increased curbside pickup options.

Even with a large portion of the mall demolished, this place is still pretty large. The Boscov's is keeping this place alive, is that one of the Boscov's with tons of neon lighting?

This was a third rate mall as early as 1971, when I moved to the area as an elementary school student. It wasn’t easy to get to off the highway, it didn’t have great stores (except the head shop), and the food court was small.

I still call it the Echelon Mall. This is the mall I went to from the stroller to now as a middle aged man. I remember in the pre-Food Court days, there was a McDonald's on the 2nd floor, and that was where a childhood friend had her 7th birthday party. I even remember when a nearby Chevrolet dealership had a satellite showroom over by Gimbell's (now Boscov's).

Ironically this year is the mall's 50th anniversary. Not hard to figure out why they're not having any kind of big celebration for it!

Boscov's is still one of the department stores that is still healthy - unlike this mall.

If you count a business that has been bailed out by taxpayers at least twice as ‘healthy’.

@@joesantamaria5874 there is barely anyone in there. I asked what the peak time is and what day and even on that time and day maybe 20 people....I am not sure how they keep that boscovs location open smh

Talk about a flashback, I remember this place as the Echelon Mall and shopping with family and friends. One of the things I remember most about this mall was how there used to be the strangest payphones that looked more like Sci-fi teleport pods. Between the others in the general area, Cherry Hill, Moorestown Mall, this was my favorite, just something about its style back in the 1980's. Gotta admit, I hardly recognize it, but there are parts that look vaguely family, I swear one of the shops you past was an old B. Dalton or Waldenbooks back in the day.

Shout out to Exhilarama woot woot. This was my mall in the 90's because of the high speed line. I worked at the cookie stand underneath the escalator leading to the food court for a hot minute. I forgot they completely demolished an entire wing of the mall. RIP Echelon Mall.

Doomie I was there in something like 2018 and on the lower level by the food court there used to be a cookie stand but it closed down what a shame they had very good cookies it just goes to show how much the mall has declined now since then.
