    This locomotive appeared in the original Railway Children film. Also it visited Kings Cross a few years ago when the Gresley statue was unveiled, which I had completely forgotten about until reading on wikipedia just now...

    Now all that's needed to complete the set of preserved GNR locos is the large Atlantic. Incidentally, I believe 1744 is currently based on the North Norfolk Railway, where they regularly pair her with the Quad-Arts. Regarding the condensing gear, I believe it was fitted to those allocated to Great Northern suburban services, as most ran over the Met to Moorgate, hence the condensing gear. I've seen photos of the locos without the gear, they look naked without it!

    In a bazaar way this loco and others like it held back progress, Electrification had shown itself to be the future before the first world war, but the success of designs like these meant the railway companies could avoid the expense of electrifying even the most tightly timed parts of their suburban systems, in a roundabout way perhaps the greatest accolade that could be bestowed on a suburban tank engine.

    • @gerogyzurkov2259
      @gerogyzurkov2259 5 лет назад

      I generally do agree with your statement. Thing is though most of the electrical trains wasn't proven yet. Coal was cheap and Britain had a huge amounts that the British rail can relay on. The Southern region did electric their lines though they still held on to stream locomotives. I definitely think the appropriate time would of been post ww2 rebuild that the British should of thought of that, but sadly politics were more focus on the car.

    Out of curiosity, why do you mean by "Cause the engines to hydraulic?" Is that something that happens when water gets into the cylinders instead of steam?

    • @rayhagele
      @rayhagele 4 года назад

      Think about an old heater powered by steam. Now think about the thumping noise it makes when it is closed and there is no way to relieve the pressure. That's the "hydraulic" action.
      Water has a tendency to condense and pool on the bottom end of steam pipes. When there is too much water in the pipes the pressure in the pipes makes waves in the pipe and temporary block the pipe causing the pressure to spike or "thump". If not corrected these sudden spikes can lead damage to the powerplant, vales and cylinders and burst pipes.
      Not what you want in a steam engine. I hope this helps.

      The railways in Britain made very limited use of articulated steam locos, but the various independent loco manufacturers made articulated locos that were exported all over the world in large numbers, Bayer-Garret, Kitson-Mayar, etc, which makes it all the more strange why the railways in Britain didn't have more articulated locos.

      It's a tradition going back more than 200 years. Initially originating at sea, when sailors would be away from their wives and sweethearts for months at a time. Their ship was the nearest 'she' they could refer to on a daily basis. It simply transferred over to other machines, including steam engines, as time went by.
