Found out a month ago my old man had a tumor in his urinary tract. They scheduled surgery end of the month to remove it and had a follow up appointment yesterday to see how things were. Sister called me last night with vague info about bladder cancer and needing seven more surgeries and chemo over the next three years. Life has given me gut punch after gut punch but I don’t know what I’ll do without my old man. This line definitely brought tears to my eyes on my way to work.

Words can’t describe what this song means to me. My daddy worked in pike county in the mines, and he also hurt his back and had to quit working. He was a very wise and humble man, and always gave the same advice to me and my brother. He passed away January 1st of this year, and when I miss him I listen to this. Thank you so much for writing this, it’s as if me and my brother wrote this for our dad. Coal mining daddy’s are the best ❤️

This is what music should be all about... we're talking about a man , a young humble man, standing in a room singing about love, hardship , pain... a man sharing his experience to the world asking for nothing but recognition... there is no vanity present, there are no watches, cars, suits, jewelry or women... he doesn't focus on what he has , he's just grateful to have it, he focusses on the sacrifices it took to get to where he is and in allowing other people to find a connection ...
I sent this to my Dad back when I was trying to get clean. Spent 10 years a slave to that drug. This coming February I'll be 3 years sober from those damn pills! 😁
I played this song over and over and over. I learned all the words, the tone, each pause. Decided to get sober that was about 18 months ago. Music can heal.
The first lines had me hooked. The voice, the guitar, the song-writing... just shows that there is still real, raw music left in this world. keep your heads up friends, music isn't dead :)
karlawson the music is as old as the Ozarks and the blue ridge mountains from Tennessee to Virginia a few hundred yrs. maybe more , the mountaineers have been playing this folksy blue grass type music. he is really good I'm digging it.
Im from Tennessee and i just caught wind of this! He needs publicity!! Hard to get around these mountains y'all... There's alot of great musicians around here....
“It takes twice as long to build bridges you’ve burnt, And there’s hurt you can cause, time alone cannot heal”..... scary how music can just pinpoint exactly what’s in your heart
I lost my dad in June 2023. It's been a tough year. We have a baby on the way and I Wish he was here. I have been sober for about 5 years, and this song reminds me so much of why I am sober today. To anyone struggling with addiction or seeing family and friend's struggling with addiction, just keep up on them and they COULD pull through. Addiction changes people, but you are not who your addiction made you to be. Theres someone in there, just gotta get to them.
I found this song today, brought me to tears. I am a recovering addict. Started with pills and moved to crack and heroin. I am blessed I recovered, that I’m still alive. So many bridges burned, so many lies. But no more! Just loving life! Thank you god.
There is something so raw and real about Tyler's music. It's haunting. The combination of his lyrics with his voice and delivery is almost overpowering sometimes. Hits you like a ton of bricks. A real country outlaw. He already belongs on the country outlaw Mt Rushmore with Williams, Cash Haggard and Jennings.
Best description I've heard yet. I don't even have an addiction problem and I'm not the son of a coal miner but this song nearly brings me to tears every time I hear it.
I thought i could keep it together, never heard this song before, i was wrong. Some pain we carry so long we forget about it and think its gone. I guess it never went away in the first place.
This song hits home for me Been clean 7 years and my nose is on the grind stone Started my own company and have 100% growth in customers for 4 years straight #nosetothegrindstone
Both my parents have battled addiction all 19 years of my life. My mom still occasionally relapses, but my father has been clean for about 7 years now. One thing I learned from them is to not go down that rabbit hole. And if their is something missing in your heart fill it with working.
Right on buddy! Awesome to hear I've been cleaning up for about a year now and that's my dream, to own and operate my own pest control company Even IF it's a one-man show
Painful and hard times befall everyone it's not segregated to race or ethnicity. Tyler's lyrics and raw emotions can resonate with any one who's struggled.
Covered this song during a gig at a local bar and every soul in that whole damn joint was completely silent and listening. I truly believe that is how you tell whether or not a song is good. The fact that it can quiet 40 or so people is amazing.
I never thought I would ever find a country song/artist that I actually liked. Was listening to Rage Against the Machine Pandora and this song came on. Still kinda baffles me as to why it did, but I'm thankful I was introduced to such a great talent.
My Dad past away 7 years ago from lung cancer, he worked under ground in Hazard ky for about 40 years he was drafted for the military and served in the army from 1967-1969 this song really hits home sure do miss and love my hard working Dad :( miss you old man!
@@willhaywood3010 still clean haven't slipped once. When I posted this comment I honestly didn't think I would make it. Thank you for reminding me of this comment I use my length of sobriety as a addition now.
I honestly believe that tyler is the most underrated country artist out right now.. this is so simple and so beautiful. in an age where true artists are becoming more and more rare.. this stands out so wonderfully
This song sums up the soul of Eastern Kentucky like none other. Those misty mountains can comfort you but they can also make you feel alone when you’re deep in the throws of an addiction. Alcohol and cocaine nearly killed me but I found a way out. I pray for all my brothers and sisters still lost in the madness may they find some peace one day.
Ain't the truth. Pike co born and raised. 16 yrs if addiction. Took going to prison and losing my wife, kids and everything to straighten up and move to central KY to get away. 8yrs clean
"Daddy worked like a mule... Well he fucked up his back and couldnt work anymore"... I saw my old man fade away from old age, a hard life, and Agent Orange in his blood from Vietnam. Cant help but cry when Tyler sings these words
Being born, raised and still living in Appalachia (and going back generations)not all that far from where Tyler is from, this song hits so hard and brings me to tears. He is definitely the musical voice of Appalachia for my generation and I’m so glad to see him getting the recognition he deserves.
This song was always playing in rehab, been 3 months sober and still play this with a smile on my face. Tyler Childress is awesome and very helpful with recovery.
I'm older but I'll say this. Real music used to say real words. We called it folk music but it bled over into mainstream country. Like Gordon lightfoot etc. THIS... Gives me hope that a new generation will continue to make real songs and music. Commercial America has lost its cultural roots. This is great.
I remember the first time I came across this song, I was high as a kite on opiates, any kind I could get my hands on whether it was H or oxy or whatever. I heard this song and that line….”keep your nose on the grindstone and outta the pills”…..and I bawled. I wanted out of that addiction so bad but I was in so deep. Within a week of listening to that song every day….I checked myself into detox and rehab. It was the absolute worst two weeks of my life. I was at risk of having a stroke or a heart attack because it was so bad. Had to be medically supervised around the clock. BP of 180/130. I don’t know how I didn’t die. But I came out of that detox…..and I haven’t looked back since. I just got 2 years clean and sober this past July. And honestly…thank you Tyler. Thank you.
Im a native american/african american 21 year old man who was adopted by white parents and have been struggling with a substance addiction on and off for 4 years. I found this song a year ago, showed to me by a co worker who had been raised in a different way than I. I was raised with some country music, but I generally don't partake. Music does not discriminate between race, color, or creed. When a man or woman is singing from the soul, it resonates to those who seek the same truth: We are all humans, and humans make mistakes. But it takes true humility to accept that you have to take accountability for your actions, and the only way to have the strength to do that is asking God for help. And God is good, so any potential good you see in others is God working through them.
I'm a recovering/relapsing alcoholic with my first kid on the way. I play this on my guitar and I look at myself in the mirror. I'll get there and this helps
try this playlist, some more songs to play in the mirror. Hit play all. Pray your still sober and your child safe. ruclips.net/p/PLqw0QTGb4ssLHuGnPm6bR8JJGS3NQCF_z
Mr. Tyler, I doubt you read these comments, but maybe you do. Just wanted to let you know how deep this song is for so many fathers and sons in the society this country has become.

Brother you don't need anyone to applaud you or put you down. You are on your own journey now. Living for yourself for the first time. I know that you can decide to do whatever you want. Don't let anyone get in-between you and your mindset. You were created for a reason, whether it was God or the universe or whatever. You belong here and u are a valued brother. You exist because you were supposed to exist. I wish u all the best in your journey
@TylerChilders-qn5hv damn straight. I am very picky about music and artists too! Lol, seriously, I can tell all of your songs are from the heart and you have some experience with all that you write. You have also re inspired me and taught me a lot about playing the guitar. 😤🐐
Not all of us Fathers forgot the old ways. Two sons I'm very proud of. 20 and 19 shaping up to be fine men. They are out there my man. Know a few more just like them.
Songs like a lesson from my dad, broke his back at work, got addicted to pills. He was an Olympian and became an abusive drug addict. He taught me many things as i grew up and became a man, a man is just as good as his word. I had my own issues, but I keep my nose on the grindstone now.
This is true country. This is what should be played on the radio instead of “country” today. This song as many others of his songs have powerful messages.
From Oklahoma! Don't ever sell out bud. Your music brings a ring to my ear. My family is from West Virginia my grandma and grandad got out of there thanks to the air Force. Both of my great grandads died from black lung. it's beautiful country and we still have family there.
My dad is an iron worker and he just passed away from an accident at work. No one would expect a 13 year old boy to listen tho this kind of music. Love you dad
So sorry for your loss, Garrett. Great music has the power to speak to people of all kinds, regardless of background, ethnicity, belief, location... and even age. Hope it continues to be a source of comfort to you. Thanks for watching, man.
t blues with maby country feel. He is singing and playing his chords and embellishments. That's why he is not blues guitar. Now maby Stapleton has blues guitar style licks and arrangements. Still too country for me. But I'm a blues man.
One thing I notice on every comment section of a music video, everyone comes together and spreads love. That's unity. Music is magic. We all feel the same pain no matter what we look like. Much love to yall.
This song kills me, so hauntingly beautiful and sad. I know this is from America, but it's never been more relevant world wide. The opioid crisis is heartbreaking.
“Keep in mind that a man is just as good as his word, it takes twice as long to build bridges you burn, and there’s hurt you can cause, time alone can’t heal” never heard truer words
Yellowstone brought me here. I have listened to many more of his videos. What a song, lyrics and performance. I just love this simple sound with a profound message.
Born and raised in Nashville. Can’t tell you how nice it is to hear real music again. Tyler, Colter Wall, Sturgill Simpson, etc.. saving country music one song at a time.
My dad introduced me to this song while we were in the line for chickfila. We had to wait in that line for an hour, just to be told that it would take another half before anyone could order, so we just drove over the curb and went to McDonalds instead, unfortunately. I may not be the closest with my dad, but it's these little moments that make it very clear he loves me, and even if I refuse to admit it sometimes, I love him.
Bless you, Tyler. Bless your Daddy and all your kin. Our folk, our proud and wounded Appalachia folk need you more than ever. It's a sad plague on our men and women. You're helping us all to heal. God keep you, brother.
"Keep in mind that a man's just as good as his word. It takes twice as long to build the bridges you've burned. And there is hurt you can cause time alone cannot heal. Keep your nose on the grindstone & out of the pills." Words to live by.
I remember about 8 years ago I was sitting at an old bar up north in Montana and listening to this song thinking wow this dudes gonna make it big! Great music, congrats to all the success Tyler. You deserve it
This will forever make me think of Dad. He never mined. But being told every day for first half of my life to keep my nose go the grind stone still plays in my head

I sent this to my Dad back when I was trying to get clean. Spent 10 years a slave to that drug. This coming February I'll be 3 years sober from those damn pills! 😁
👏 hoping that you've still clean hun!
@@theresasquirestheresa Yes Ma'am goin strong never lookin back
I played this song over and over and over. I learned all the words, the tone, each pause. Decided to get sober that was about 18 months ago. Music can heal.
Congratulations. Stay vigilant. Stay strong.
@@theresasquirestheresa I see happiness all around you, can I please share from it ❤
The first lines had me hooked. The voice, the guitar, the song-writing... just shows that there is still real, raw music left in this world. keep your heads up friends, music isn't dead :)
karlawson listen to colter wall
karlawson the music is as old as the Ozarks and the blue ridge mountains from Tennessee to Virginia a few hundred yrs. maybe more , the mountaineers have been playing this folksy blue grass type music. he is really good I'm digging it.
Im from Tennessee and i just caught wind of this! He needs publicity!! Hard to get around these mountains y'all... There's alot of great musicians around here....
Shovels and Rope too. There is good country these days and it lives on RUclips.
karlawson could you give us a listen ?
“It takes twice as long to build bridges you’ve burnt,
And there’s hurt you can cause, time alone cannot heal”.....
scary how music can just pinpoint exactly what’s in your heart
Definitely agree 💯💜💚❤️
My favorite part of the song. Sooooo true.
Stand Strong
I found this song today, brought me to tears. I am a recovering addict. Started with pills and moved to crack and heroin. I am blessed I recovered, that I’m still alive. So many bridges burned, so many lies. But no more! Just loving life! Thank you god.
There is something so raw and real about Tyler's music. It's haunting. The combination of his lyrics with his voice and delivery is almost overpowering sometimes. Hits you like a ton of bricks. A real country outlaw. He already belongs on the country outlaw Mt Rushmore with Williams, Cash Haggard and Jennings.
"almost overpowering at times"
Ain't that the truth
Best description I've heard yet. I don't even have an addiction problem and I'm not the son of a coal miner but this song nearly brings me to tears every time I hear it.
Amen!
I thought i could keep it together, never heard this song before, i was wrong. Some pain we carry so long we forget about it and think its gone. I guess it never went away in the first place.
Much respect and love.

GOD BLESS BROTHER!! Been clean since November 4 2019
Both my parents have battled addiction all 19 years of my life. My mom still occasionally relapses, but my father has been clean for about 7 years now. One thing I learned from them is to not go down that rabbit hole. And if their is something missing in your heart fill it with working.
Congrats!!
Congratulations. That is wonderful, take it one day at a time.♡
Right on buddy! Awesome to hear
I've been cleaning up for about a year now and that's my dream, to own and operate my own pest control company
Even IF it's a one-man show
This might be one of the best songs ever written
You can hear the pain in his voice. Real unusual as a black person to listen to country but a lot more of of can relate to this than you think.
Nagee Cathey Mexican here 🙋♂️it’s like I can feel the pain
Painful and hard times befall everyone it's not segregated to race or ethnicity. Tyler's lyrics and raw emotions can resonate with any one who's struggled.
Sorrow and agony know do not know color..
That’s not true at all
It was a non Caucasian persuasion neighbor that suggested this song...hits the gut fs.
Covered this song during a gig at a local bar and every soul in that whole damn joint was completely silent and listening. I truly believe that is how you tell whether or not a song is good. The fact that it can quiet 40 or so people is amazing.
You should post a vid of the cover
Id be really interested in watching that cover.
Me too
Same. Let’s hear it. ♥️

I never thought I would ever find a country song/artist that I actually liked. Was listening to Rage Against the Machine Pandora and this song came on. Still kinda baffles me as to why it did, but I'm thankful I was introduced to such a great talent.
This is Appalachian mountain music
It's a glitch in the matrix
Good on you for recognizing.

What a beautiful song with such a stark and haunting anti-capitalist undertone! Truly the 'Born in the U.S.A.' of modern American folk music!
My Dad past away 7 years ago from lung cancer, he worked under ground in Hazard ky for about 40 years he was drafted for the military and served in the army from 1967-1969 this song really hits home sure do miss and love my hard working Dad :( miss you old man!

I honestly believe that tyler is the most underrated country artist out right now.. this is so simple and so beautiful. in an age where true artists are becoming more and more rare.. this stands out so wonderfully
Agreed.
Austin Ballard cody jinks
Tyler and Colter Wall have gotten country back into my playlists again.
Arlo McKinley is ridiculously underrated as well.
What about Sturgill? I'm not sure where he's from though
Doesn't matter how many times I hear him sing it; it's always raw and new and sparks something in my frozen core.

Such a powerful story - so glad you are doing well and so glad to hear this has helped you on your journey
Keep going! You got this
Let's goo bro you got this 💪 it truly is the devil no doubt keep it up you got this god bless you 🙏
I'm older but I'll say this. Real music used to say real words. We called it folk music but it bled over into mainstream country. Like Gordon lightfoot etc. THIS... Gives me hope that a new generation will continue to make real songs and music. Commercial America has lost its cultural roots. This is great.
There's hurt you can cause time alone cannot heal! You have to be older to get that line. The fact that a kid wrote makes it even MORE amazing!
Yes. Tyler is an old soul. It's scary good.
Thank you.
Dude poured out his heart and soul and some fucking creep in the comments is pretending to be Tyler.
Fuck man.
Saying a prayer for you!

So so so happy for you… don’t know you… but love you
Awesome.. keep on KEEPING ON!! Check out the song "MY ADDICTION" by Lines of Loyalty... Some songs just hit home...
Stay strong brother 💪🏼 we are with you no matter how lonely shit can get
Amen brother

Hurt, pain, and regret wrote this song. Tyler just felt it and sang it with his soul.

Yellowstone brought me here. I hear, the pain, the truth, and the hopefulness of the lyrics. This is a gift. What music is meant to be.
Songs like a lesson from my dad, broke his back at work, got addicted to pills. He was an Olympian and became an abusive drug addict. He taught me many things as i grew up and became a man, a man is just as good as his word. I had my own issues, but I keep my nose on the grindstone now.
Thanks for sharing your story. Music is so connective.
This is true country. This is what should be played on the radio instead of “country” today. This song as many others of his songs have powerful messages.
Went from being a hardcore addict on meth and pills to a nursing student with a full time job. Keep on the grindstone
Keep it up, man! Congrats.
