I can back @Vulf on this one as a big ol' weirdo who loves Fender designed basses. Nearly every instrument he ever designed was on the basis of being friends with country and western musicians and liking country and western music. When he showed the sting ray to people they were like "Bruh, what is this, it's sooo bright"
He made a prototype bass with a 5 string pickup on a 4 string model to address this (and actually scientifically there are some major advantages to using a 5 pole piece pickup on a 4 string bass).

_The Joe Dart Jr Artist Series Signature Bass is the younger sibling of the popular Joe Dart bass. With its custom contoured body and simplified single humbucking layout, the Joe Dart Jr packs a serious punch in a convenient smaller package. The bass features a lightweight ash body, select maple neck, and a passive neodymium pickup that is at the heart of its warm, punchy tonality. No controls or equalization to color the sound; the tone is manipulated solely by the user's technique and finesse. Finished in Olympic White, the Dart Jr is nicely outfitted with 22 stainless steel frets, chrome hardware, and comes set up tuned down to C standard with custom .045 - .105 Ernie Ball Short Scale Flatwound Bass Strings. The Joe Dart Jr ships with a black Mono "Vertigo" gig bag providing unparalleled protection thanks to its military-spec rugged construction._

This bass would look like a toy next to my Spector NS-5, which is a ginormous beast with all its knobs, switches, and 37" multi-scale neck, while this one is pretty much the exact opposite. Which makes it a potentially interesting instrument to add to the collection, as I suspect it fills a particular sonic niche, as would a baritone guitar, piccolo bass, or fretless. Honestly think I'd like to have one of these.

Cool video, great bass and Joe is amazing.
I’m a pro bass player and am so done with bass manufacturers putting tons of knobs on bass’s, all ya really need is a volume knob with any bass, use your amp or pedals to create your sound.
I recently discovered and purchased two Sterling short scale bass’s and love them, I’m not going back to 34” scale bass’s and have sold most of 34” bass’s, my next purchase will be a Music Man short scale bass when a new batch get released for sale.
    Minimalist bass’s are awesome.
    Ok, that’s my rant.
    Cheers, Davyo

Scale length of a 3/4 upright is roughly 41.5 inches, fender's are generally 34. How is that copying? Unless you're referring to a cello which is 34. Furthermore, by eliminating the pots, the sound will be brighter then with pots as they add capacitance to the signal path even when turned up full. I personally prefer to just have a spst on-off switch on my basses. All that being said, I much prefer Joe's simple approach over other basses with nine zilllion nobs and dials, that's what amps are for. I good bass should sound close to what you want right out of the box. Play on Joe!
