Actually, and beyond any aspect of ethnomusicology, this a nice introduction to the realm of musical creativity and innovation. Thumbs up for Shawn and the Schulich School of Music!

He teaches really well and fast. Are there more videos on tabla? Is there a course?
Hello and thank you for your interest. There is the McGill Tabla Ensemble, which is a course available to music students (and non-music majors with special permission), and I also offer a one-week intensive tabla workshop every summer.

Good thesis, LCM-HCF & nPr-nCr maths. understanding (+AABAA... Permutations), practical next reciting-bols (bols=bolna/speak out...clap/wave•pinky•ring•middle), of taals (from taalab/pond, with taals having limit/boundary unlike ponds).
N.B.: For Carnatic Mridangam, Vedic kirtan/Rabindrasangeet khol/mridanga, dhulki, Africa bongo, A.Khusru's 'upright' tabla, the treble=goat hide, whereas the bass=cow hide globally®. Kolkata, India, & share globally plz.❤

My brain does not work like that. I think after a couple of years I’d still be like, “Dhā...te...uh...what was that again?”
Hhhhhhhhhh
We are just used to it. It's not that hard if you learn for a month or two.

This is why Viram Jasnai played tabla drums on “Black Mountain Side” and not John Bonham on the first Led Zeppelin album.
So this is what Indian beat boxing sounds like
Tha thakita takatakita belongs to carnatic system ...you should have explained it....Hindustani system n carnatic system. Kindly please check..
Hello. I understand what you are saying, and I did consider the use of 'TaKaDiMi' in this particular exercise. I could have used 'TiRaKiTa' instead, for example. However while I definitely agree that TaKaDiMi is Carnatic in origin, it has become so widespread, that one can also hear it applied in Hindustani music as well. This is more detail that can be explained in such a short video, which was really intended as a very short introduction, with a very short example. TaKiTa, however does exist as a traditional bol in Hindustani music, so I will have to respectfully disagree with you on that point.
Nice and reminds me how I've played 25 years ago. It's not wrong, but in order to play very fast and automatic without practising hours daily this isn't doing the trick. Today I know that Tabla works a bit different. One hint: Kumar Bose solos are more authentic than others...
Great video BUT, how do you go from all the basic syllables to suddenly a rhythm such as 'TiRaKiTa' this rhythm has syllables which you have not talked about or mentioned or explained, so it becomes immediately confusing (to me anyway). I would expect to see combinations of the syllables you outlined before you got to the rhythms? Sorry I am a Westerner trying to understand Indian rhythms 🙈.
TiRaKiTa is the same as TeteKiTe but it's easier to say TiRaKiTa
Hello and thank you for your interest. This video isn't intended as a 'how to play tabla' video, but rather a very brief introduction to the instrument, with just a few quick, short examples. When learning to play the tabla, things progress in a more gradual manner. The bols (syllables) in tabla tell us which strokes are to be played on the instrument. A particular syllable can refer to more than one sound, and many sounds have more than one name. This can be confusing to someone just starting out. The best way to learn this music is to find a teacher and to learn through the oral tradition.
Actually tabla is played in all part of India
Traducir a español👍
Reminds me of Aigiri Nandini
You can also watch shri hari stotram, very beautiful sanskrit song

Is north Indian and south indian tabla not the same?
@@1234fazermann tabla? Those are different instruments. I think he ment bols
@ Pete J
Tabla is actually from North India. The South has the Mridangam, whose Northern equivalent is the Pakhavaj.
Tabla is an instrument from the Hindustani tradition. While there are a few people who play tabla in Carnatic music, it is quite rare, and it is not normally found in the Carnatic tradition. The percussion instruments used in Carnatic music are the mridangam, ghatam, kanjira, and morsing.
@@tablamontreal I would have to disagree that it is rare. I'm learning tabla from carnatic main stream performers.
@@petej5232 I'm very surprised to hear this. Perhaps tabla in Carnatic music has become more popular than I was aware of. Thank you for sharing.
North indian music cant b expand due to the weak system compare to carnatic music well structured..pls refer to catnatic ecperts
The counting system in carnatic far more advanced...takita takadhimi carnatic system why u saying that north Indian. System ..please x mix it ..u r adopting south. Indian. Carnatic to it.

Please. Aware the 2 different. System ..and i think nowadays. North. Started. To adop. South system. Ss they. Realised. Thier system of music not. Well. Structured.
wtf did that dude just say?? hukatuckka ticy taccy toe
You are using carnatic tala system bcoz in north Indian music system doesn't exit ..they apply differently...
But tabla is north Indian instrument not south indian
You shouldnt mix it
As a music academy instructor in North America, my emphasis in these lessons is on children under the age of six and those at the introductory level, especially on their initial days in the tabla classroom. I provide the essential tricks and tips for students to lay the foundation for their musical journey.

00:23 "we don't learn through sheet music. we learn through oral tradition." That is unscholarly. Wake me up when this art evolves into the modern era of writing music down in thorough notation.
He doesn’t mention this in the video but there is a different format for writing it down as sheet music
