⚓️Huge Wave almost got me! Ship 'Paul R. Tregurtha' departs Duluth, MN

- The 1013 foot ship Paul R. Tregurtha was fighting 30 mph wind gusts as it passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, MN. The wind created some big waves and one almost drenched me next to the canal wall. The Paul R. Tregurtha produced cool looking swirling wakes that hammered into the canal wall as well. Lots of action in this video for sure.

Boat Friends, this is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Look what this guy did with a decommissioned ship. ruclips.net/video/ueAWBuYrKjI/видео.html
I watched that and enjoyed it. He’s living a dream. Thanks
Now cool is that!!!!!!’
Greetings from England, and many thanks indeed for yet another superb video, she is a magnificent ship!
Many thanks! Julian, I appreciate you brother!
Miss going n watching the boats with my dad as a kid ... Stay at holiday inn on the beach.. definitely one of our best spots to enjoy a family weekend out... Ty for being my eyes now as the great ships come in n out...
Mike, your amazing! Thanks for sharing this passion with us! Duluth/ North Shore/ State of Mn/ The Chamber of Commerce’s should contract you. You have the ability to lure us city folk up your way. Your videos and positivity and your love of this magnificent Inland Port is like no other! Thank you!

Bob, what an absolutely wonderful comment. My positivity tends to go down when it’s 25 below zero and a foot of snow outside during the winter.😂🥶 No, but serious, I really appreciate what you said. I said it before, I’m just a dude out here with the camera having fun. This is such a great hobby. I’m learning new things every day. It means a lot to me Bob. Thank you for that wonderful comment. Have a great Sunday my friend. I hope to chat with you again very soon. ⛴️⛴️⛴️👊👊👍
Looks like we're all going to have to get Mike a wet-suit so he can keep filming on the canal walkway's!😂

Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm really glad to hear that you're enjoying the ships. I'll definitely keep bringing you more cool ship content from Duluth. Your support means a lot, and I'm happy to be able to share these moments with you!
All Hail the BEAUTIFUL and MIGHTY Queen of The Lakes!
🙂
Brian, such a great looking vessel. It never gets old. I love it.
Mike, great job, this one was so much fun I love to see the waves of Superior! Thank you! 🌊🌊🌊
Wonderful video. Great to contrast it with the Harbor cam. Yours is much more human and authentic somehow.
Dan, I really appreciate you saying that! I’m just a dude out here having fun with a camera. I’m glad to have you along my friend.
Hi Dan. I see it the same way. Mike personalizes the videos and that's why I got hooked starting with his first ship video last year. Glad you checked in.
👍⛴️
I just have trouble imagining what it would have been like to be out on the lake in a ship 200 years ago. Those had to have been some brave sailors.
Thanks for the video
Mike, you and I both have thought about this. I can’t even imagine.⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️😮
@@vibewithmike I went from Leland to north Manitou Island last year same weather with an 11' dinghy & had engine failure (harrowing experience) miracle I made it! What a blast though, making sure I've got a more reliable motor this year🙏🚤👍
Brilliant! One of your best, thanks for being there. Felt like I was stood next to you!
Anthony, wasn’t that crazy to see that stream running right down the canal walkway? At the very end, before I end the video, you can kind of tell I hopped over the stream. My shoes got completely wet.😂😂😂
Enjoyed the video Mike. PRT is always a favorite. and BE SAFE OUT THERE!
The PRT is the best of the best out there. The biggest. Always a treat to see this vessel. Have a great Sunday night and an even better Monday Henry.
Having surf like at the ocean, on a lake , never ceases to amaze me
Jeff, it’s absolutely crazy. I know what you mean. To watch people surfing on a lake, wild! It’s cool watching the lake go back to calm conditions, then get wild. There’s a legit contrast.🌊🌊🌊🏄🏻♂️🏄🏻♂️🏄🏻♂️
Thanks for sharing such a great video with all of us from far away.
I was born and grew up about 50 miles south of Sturgeon Bay, WI. We never saw any ships
this size on the Fox river. We only saw coal ships delivering to our power plant and very small cargo
ships.
I’m familiar with Sturgeon Bay because I reference that area due to a Bay Shipbuilding Company a lot in my videos. I would love to get to Sturgeon Bay at some point, I heard it’s wonderful there. Thank you so much for your comment. It means a lot to me, all the best to you Wendy.
Thanks, Mike, for your awesome video. We see the good weather and the not so good weather, just awesome. Stay safe and dry.
Scott, literally the good and bad weather can be hour by hour here in Duluth!😂😂😂☀️☀️☀️⛈️⛈️⛈️
Wow, those waves looks hectic! Beautiful huge ship, always like to watch the PRT! Thanks Mike! Stay safe! 🤗😍
You definitely don’t want to be on a kayak out there
Hi from Ottawa Mike! She's the first ship that I ever saw and got me hooked. I sent your vid to my brother in Thunder Bay. My other brother Mike photographs the Lakers there. We appreciate you too Mike. Thanks again for a great video.
I’m sure you get some decent size vessels there on the Ottawa River? What a great first ship to see! I hope you’re having a great Sunday Gail.
Thanks Mike!!!! Another great video!!! ❤
I’m sure glad that you enjoyed the Pam. All the best my friend. The sun is out but it’s a little cooler today here in Duluth.
Great ship. Great sound. Great wave action. Great video.
Betty, what a nice thing to say. Thank you so much.
Simply outrageous ship!! We NEVER EVER see ANYTHING that BIG in the Chesapeake Bay. At 1,013 feet, the PRT would be much too long to negotiate the tight turning angles of our various channels. Thanks for sharing this impressive video!😊
This ship is a Beast!
I live in the west & have been to Duluth twice in my 70+ years & got to see this magnificent ship both times.
Alan! I’m glad you made it to Duluth my friend. It will keep brining you the cool ship action.
Great job once again!
Hey! I’m glad that you liked it. There’s always different weather here in Duluth. Keeps me guessing.👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Hey Mike you already responded to one of my comments, thanks, but I just had to re how much I enjoy the videos. I am also watching Joe Franta's videos about his experiences working on those giant ships. All of it is so interesting. Ships are so fascinating
Did you see the tour video I did from a 1000 foot ship? ruclips.net/video/f4fZFdiTHW4/видео.htmlsi=5FjzF1s2uVrRfOtQ
Another great video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge on these amazing ships! I wish we were there, but this certainly is the next best thing!
Even if you’re not here, I’m bringing you with! Happy Sunday, my friend
Awesome ship Boy the lake conditions really do change quickly.
Ken, literally hour by hour it’s something new on the lake or the canal!👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Great again! 42 degrees wow that sounds wonderful. Two days ago my car showed 101 in a parking lot, it went down to 95 on the road. Orlando is killing me.
I’ll make a deal, can you send me 20° of your heat and I’ll send you 20° of my cold, that should take care of both of us!
Just wait until the humidity is trying to kill you too. Florida is a nice place to visit. But I could never live there.
Ralphy, think of those 25 below days we get brother. No Florida?
@@vibewithmike plus hurricanes... no, there's quite a few reasons I live where the air hurts my face 6 months out of the year. I'll take the snow and cold and the 1 in a million chance of a tornado hitting my house over 99 degrees and 110% humidity. And a storm with a woman's name washing everything away every few years.
@@vibewithmike I was raised in the Midwest. I remember the 30 Below wind chills etcetera. Living here you realize that you can always put more clothes on BUT you can only legally take so much off.

@Vibe with Mike ⚓️ yes sir u have to respect mother nature and respect any kind of water otherwise you are in grave danger
Absolutely!
That would have been a cold shower! I have so many new points of reference now that we've been there. I see Enger Tower at the top of the hill. I'm not a fan of heights but I did make it to the top - briefly. About 2 pictures and I was DONE and ready to come down. 🥴 But I did it! You got some great wide shots. I've learned to keep an eye on those holes at the base of the pier wall. If water is coming in them, you're gonna get wet if you're too close. Of course the middle of the walkway wasn't really viable on this day, either!
Yes!!😂😂
Many people have got their shoes drenched not knowing that. Did you get to skyline Drive? The best photos there!
@@vibewithmike We did! When we came into town, we hopped off the Interstate and started at the Welcome Center at Thompson Hill. We followed the Pkwy basically all the way to N Lake, where we headed south to cross the lift bridge. Slight hiccup at W Superior St, where we stopped at a red light and smelled a burning rubber odor. I said, "I hope that's not us!", looked out my window and saw smoke - coming from our vehicle! Our brakes were not happy. And we just had them replaced before our trip so we knew they were in good shape, they just didn't like being ridden all the way down that hill. We pulled into a parking lot and let them cool down and continued on our way. We never had a problem with them again - but we did use 1st gear a few times on other big hills to avoid it! Lesson learned and another quirky vacation memory for our family. We seem to have 'something' weird happen on every trip!
I’m so glad that you got to have fun and Duluth. That makes me so happy. I hope you come back again soon.
Very impressive! I hope you get to visit the Welland locks some time, you get really close to the ships there!

@@vibewithmike she was one of the last steam ships . Captain Fulford was a really nice man who went out of his way to train his crew but had his prank side also...first time sailing and getting pounded in a storm on lake superior ships just driving thru the waves and the ship is like a roller coaster so capt has me on the wheel to get some experience then he pulls out a tuna fish sandwich and comes over to me as 6 shades of green and opens it in my face boy you never saw someone run so fast to a bathroom the helmsman and captain said i woukd get over sea sickness now lol and boy were they right.

And with the wind being strong enough to cause choppy conditions tho not Force 8 plus [ Gale force ] . the vessel is sailing into the wind and against the current due to the water smashing against the bow as she ventures forward .. there is also a hidden danger.. that inlet will have a very strong under current !!!
Very common sight on the River Clyde here in Scotland on blustery days ... ,On Friday ...there was 2 guys setting up there fishing gear on the slipway .. due to there blatent lack of knowledge . of the dangers of setting up at the waters edge ,,, due tidal change will cause large swells ,, which is what happend to them as they nearly lost half there gear .
I hope everything is well in Scotland for you my friend! Thank you for this comment. It’s packed with information and a great story. Boat Friends, I have included a link so you can learn more about the River Clyde in Scotland! Looks absolutely beautiful! 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Clyde
@@vibewithmike There was a Boat built in 67 , for the Great Lakes sadly she sank after a collision , We have a laker inbound soon on the Clyde
I’m going to pull up my app, marine traffic, and take a look.
Wouldn't the strong wind blowing towards the ship affect the travel of sound for the ship's whistle, blowing the sound waves away from you when you are trying for a reading?
Randy, great observation my friend. I’ve been trying to learn the science of how sound travels and the echoing effect as well. I think over time documenting the decibel level for each vessel I’ll be able to factor in an average.
You could also tell us if it is High, or Low tide, and who the skipper is???
1-2m high waves I am guessing. May I be close?
Is this ship a steam vessel or using LNG in its engines?
D EMIL, you’re very close to the wave height. Great question about the exhaust. It’s actually a scrubbing system that converts the exhaust to steam. It’s quite fascinating. I provided a link below for you. I hope you come back for another video my friend, and a comment. Nice chatting with you. www.interlake-steamship.com/about-us/sustainability/
@@vibewithmike Thanks for the link. Great info, didn’t know that.
Yes I‘ll surely come back for more videos!
Great to hear! Have a wonderful Monday
Shhhhhhh……quiet……we get it.
Cynthia, there are numerous maritime RUclips channels where nobody talks at all, and frankly, I thought there was a need for a channel where a person reports live about what’s going on. If you were watching the news with live coverage in the New Hampshire area and the on scene reporter didn’t talk for 2 minutes (dead silence), how would that sound? This is the exact same format as live news coverage. I see you are on the Ship Junkies forum too! I’m glad that you enjoy the ships as well. I hope you have a wonderful Monday. All the best. ⛴️
Great video. Does a ship of that size fully laden get affected much by the bigger waves?
Thanks for the question Nigel. I hope your day is going well. These ships are massive, so they are really built to take on big waves, but the captains try to keep everybody safe, so why risk it. Many times they anchor and wait out storms. I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
@vibewithmike I watch as much as I can. To be honest I'm not really a ship person but I really enjoy how you put your videos together with the information etc. I guess it's just the sheer size of those beasts that fascinate me. I live in the Scottish glens and mountains, so don't too many opportunities to get to the coast. For now thanks for letting me enjoy the piers of Duluth and the beautiful great lakes.
The ships are massive and it’s a big draw for all of us
Is that an observatory on the top of the hill?
Really good eye my friend, it definitely looks like that from a distance. Here’s what you were saying. I hope you’re having a wonderful Sunday. All the best you, check it out here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enger_Tower
Did she have a crew and a captain well seasoned? (RIP GL)
What app are you using to track the various ships?
Hi Thom! Happy Sunday! The app I use is called “MarineTraffic” and it has a blue ship for the logo. You will really enjoy it! You can research vessel names and follow ships all over the world. I hope you enjoy! All the best friend!👍👍⛴️⛴️ I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. Be careful out there
Thanks Michael, all the best to you
If it has diesel propulsion, what is making the steam?
That is not steam it is the exhaust from the diesel engines coming out of the main stacks although these ships do have auxiliary boilers which are called donkey boilers and they provide steam for the heating system if you look closely at the main stacks you can see smaller smoke stacks next to them and those are the stacks for the donkey boilers, generators and other equipment that burns fuel
Matt, I’m no expert. Keep this in mind. I’m just going based off of the company’s website. Take a look at this. It does appear that it is steam after going through scrubbing process. www.interlake-steamship.com/about-us/sustainability/

@@mattharper588 thanks for clearing that up for me.
@@vibewithmike The ultimate by-product from the engine exhaust is, in fact, steam like you mentioned. It certainly creates a massive plume able to be seen for many miles.

I just want to say we love this app! We saw Mesabi Miner and Wicko when in Duluth in 2021, and have followed these two ships (along with others) since then.
I’m so happy you like it. I’ve been using it for a while and it’s such a lifesaver trying to time the ships. We will both have fun using it!
@@vibewithmike Thanks. I spend s great deal of time around the Wilmington port area in NC. And plan a trip north this summer and want to check out the Erie canal and locks.
I’ve heard of that port out there in NC. I had a wonderful time in Charlotte a few years back. I stayed downtown but checked out the area a lot. I have to get to the Erie Canal as well someday, it’s a pleasure meeting you and chatting with you. All the best brother.👍👊⛴️
What huge wave?
Within the first few seconds in the video water sprays from behind me and you can see it on camera. I got drenched all over my back and neck.

Look like high water lever
Arne! Happy Sunday. I hope you are doing well. Thank you for the comment. Yeah the water was pretty high up to the wall. All the best my friend.
The wind is coming directly off the big water, and it actually pushes the water ahead of it and raises the level for the whole end of the lake. If you're in a sheltered spot, it looks like the tide's coming in. There's a bridge at the southern end of Georgian Bay at Waubaushene where when the wind comes from the north, you can stand up in your boat south of the bridge and you can't see the water surface on the north side. It's like a chute of fast water coming in with the Bay about three or four feet higher. I've gotten stuck there for hours when the weather changes suddenly, not that you'd want to go out in the Bay with the wind like that, anyway.
That would make me so nervous. Heck, I get nervous standing on the ground when it’s that crazy weather. I can’t imagine being out there on the water. You’re a braver soul than I am.
@@vibewithmike - You don't go out there when it's like that. You go out on a nice calm sunny day. Then you feel a bit of the sweat on your cheek cool off with a breeze. Ten minutes later, you're in twelve foot waves and the whole world is gray.
Unbelievably scary. Lake superior really changes quickly here, I noticed that.
THE SHIP SAID SHUT UP
Let the video do the talking. We can see.
I really appreciate your interest in ship videos! 90-99% of ship videos globally on RUclips are silent with the natural sounds and that's totally cool! Everyone has a different preference when watching videos. I'm doing something very different. My approach is the same as a live news reporter on the scene reporting what's going on firsthand, and relaying observations. Having minutes of silence doesn't work at all with this format. I'm having fun out here with the ships. I'm just a person with a camera and a hobby. I hope this makes sense. I do respect your opinion and comment! All the best to you! ⛴️⛴️
I didn't See Any Huge Wave !!
Juan, well, it’s all perspective. I grew up in Minneapolis with zero ships or huge body’s of water. Big wave to me.
