  • In Search of Meluhha frames the Indus Valley Civilization within the current context of South Asia. Recent Indus floods have highlighted the precarious nature of the Indus River Delta. New research has shown that the Indus Civilization existed at a ‘Goldilocks moment’. With the thawing of tensions between India and Pakistan, In Search of Meluhha is the kind of a Goldilocks project that presents a view of pre-history irrespective of nationalist or religious identity.
    The filmmakers begin the Story of Mohenjodaro with breathtaking visuals that take the viewers to the flood plains of Indus River. The subsequent narrative is driven by insightful interviews that articulate subject’s relation to Indus valley civilization and the inspiring effect it has had on their identity as artists, artisans and activists. As a short form documentary, In Search of Meluhha presents a rare opportunity to experience the remnants of a unique civilization and to learn from our combined human experience.

    Please note the subtle political comment by the guide. 'Let us send the Mullah to India and bring back the dancing girl.' Kathak is also a Hindu tradition, part of Sage Bharat's Natya Shashtra. It means 'Storytelling through Dance'. The film also gives a clue to subterranean and suppressed Sindhi Nationalism of the people living in this part of the world and how do they nurse a sense of cultural loss in present day Pakistan.

      We sindhi are soffi's respect all religions few centuries before we all were Hindus. even after conversion before 1900 we followed all our wedding and other tradition like sindhi Hindus because we were unite as Sindhi Nation. but then slowly slowly Mullas from other Areas penetrate among our soft minds and they started imposing some rigid Islamics rules. so few our black sheeps are spreading hatred for Hindus.

      The satellite evidence of the ancient dried up River Sarasvati and the underwater ruins off of the coast of Gujerat indicate the huge amount of exploration & study still to do. India & Pakistan archaeologists teams need to really work cooperatively on both sides of the political border. And ordinary people should be educated about the importance of the work....If people disrespect their ancestors and the roots of their culture & civilisation, they have no hope for a good future.

      @Spartacus Singh Islam has existed since the first human Prophet Adam PBUH set foot on Earth. It was just called by different names throughout time since before the arrival of the last Prophet Muhammad PBUH, you'll have to do some research and learning to understand Islam properly. The message was always the same and that was to attain peace by "Submission to the will of the Almighty God".

    • @ameeqshaikh123
      @ameeqshaikh123 3 года назад

      @Spartacus Singh I'm not brainwashed... this is the truth, if you look at every other major religion in the world they have monotheistic roots, Islam is based upon the idea of strict monotheism. Islam revives the previously distorted message of God to its true form which was always to attain peace by "Submission to the will of the Almighty God" that's what the word Islam literally means. If you still think I am brainwashed then 1.8 billion people in the world who are Muslims are also brainwashed.

    I believe that the Indus Valley is the oldest Civilisation and cannot understand why people always think either the Sumerians or Egyptians were the first to build like this. They had places to bathe, which were communal; toilets which were flushed by an attendant on the outside of the building and larger engineering projects which captured the yearly water from the Sarasvati floods each year. They traded with Mesopotamia, and sold Lapis Lazuli, and other products such as flour, with the Sumerians. They knew about the Planets and Mathematics and the Sumerians had stayed with them before they went on to settle in Ur and other places in Mesopotamia. They could drill teeth and make thrown pots. A very sensitive production from Pakistan specially in light of the intolerant climate created by wahabism and political islam. I must appreciate the courage of the producers. Unwillingness to accept the past and the original culture as a narrative of Pakistan's identity has resulted in neglect of the site. In light of the script yet to be deciphered, and the looming danger of Talibani and wahabi hoards, it is best for Pakistani sane society to seek help and protection of this site, from international bodies least we may loose the real history of this civilisation if these animical forces destroy the site.

    Buddhist stupa in mohenjodaro ...? It is estimated to be around 4500 years old and abandoned around 4000 years ago...Buddha around 600 bc??? Can someone explain please..???

    • @BlackcrowProductions
      @BlackcrowProductions  8 лет назад +25

      Very good observation. This one is not very clear. The stupa was thought to have been build on top of the mound during Buddhist period. However, newer research shows it might have been part of Meluhha/Mohenjodaro. We just don't know. Here is excerpt from science magazine. But since the 1920s,
      archaeologists have considered the dome to be a much later
      Buddhist stupa ringed by cells of monks, built using Indus bricks
      2 millennia after the city’s demise. Now, University of Naples archaeologist Giovanni
      Verardi says that this magnificent structure may actually be a monument
      from Indus times. If he’s right, it will force Indus scholars to rethink the religious and political
      nature of the civilization, long thought to lack grand temples and palaces (see main text).

      You're definitely right! There are common words in Romanian and the most widely spoken languages in India; e.g : The word "enemy" - in Romanian we say: "duşman"; in Hindi it's "dushman"; The word "room" - in Romanian we say: " camera ", in Hindi / Urdu it's "Kamra";
      Then, there is a Sanskrit word " apas" which means
      " water" - in Romanian we say almost the same: " apa ".
      In Hinduism, OM is a sacred sound and a sacred symbol;
      in Romanian when we point out or talk about a person / man/ a human being we call it : " om " . For a better example: " He is a good man", we are saying: " El este un om bun "... In addition to, we have few cities that bear Hindu Gods names like : "Deva" in the region of Transylvania, and "Agnita" ( from Hindu God Agni), which is right into the heart of our country...
      Amazing isn't it?
      All the very best to you!

      It means you're working abroad, and have the opportunity to meet Romanians ( well, I'm just guessing!)...However, I must congratulate you! Not everyone is interested in these topics; they are subtle things and require some knowledge. Definitely, you must be a wonderful person.
      Thanks again!

      Even though we don’t have the United india we want which comprises all the nations that used to be vital constituents of “Akhand Bharata” we still believe in the map and that can never be stolen from us like the invading armies did already with so many other national chattels so many years ago.

      Sourabh Ghosh: Don’t think that India was a mere pissant in the historical timeline of the world. India was a force to be reckoned with, we have evidence that we conducted trade as far as the ancient Roman Empire. So that will dispel any notions from India haters that we simply sat around with our thumbs up our asses just WAITING to be invaded!!!
      Also, don’t believe your British authored history books, they will never tell you anything other than THEIR version of distorted history. Western accounts of history are very dubious and scandalous! They cannot be trusted to be relied upon! Instead you’d fare better with watching talks conducted by the “Srijan Foundation” and the “Festival of Bharat” on RUclips, in which a wide range of foreign and indigenous apologists attest to the great vastness and prestige of Indian history.

    Many congratulations to Blackcrow Productions for putting this documentary. The western intellectuals and historians downplayed the ancient historical places which still exists and now emerging. The landlocked of this area - India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and up to Kazakhstan and Iran, was part of the civilization. The language and historical facts finding suggest the civilization was not only 5000 years old but much older than 5000.. even 11000 years. This should be known to every Indian and Pakistani should be proud of that they are descendent of the world oldest and most advanced civilization. Sumer is not the cradle of civilization, the history books need to be rewritten. Kushan period and dried mythological river Saraswati once flowed (indeed no more mythological as powerful satellite imagery has found the river bed). Thank you for this film. As an archaeologist with a PhD in Harappan studies, and a Sindhi, this is a special treat for me even though our knowledge of this civilization and people has vastly improved with more recent findings in India. Mohenjo Daro has a special significance for me as my mom had visited the site as a school girl when she lived in Karachi. Its terribly saddening to hear of the neglect and abuse of our shared heritage simply because it belonged to a time before modern religious beliefs. People of Pakistan should feel proud to have inherited such a rich and ancient history and that they are the caretakers of these archaeological sites which are sentinels of the first civilization on earth... Blackcrow Productions this is an excellent production. Thank you.
    I have read some of the comments made by individuals who know little of the context and continue to shoot off.
    The discovery of Harrapa and Mohenjodaro was as a result of the colonial British road building projects of the early 20th century. The British engineers supervising the building of these roads between Bahawalpur and Sadiqabad and Larkana to Dadu found that the bricks supplied by the contractors were non-standard. This is going back to around 1905. The contractors were questioned and informed the local District Officers who then got Sir John Marshall to undertake the excavations from whom Mortimer Wheeler took over the digs. Generally, Islam has protected different faiths and their cultures. In the past fifty years in Pakistan what we have seen is somewhat similar to the same religious extremism seen in India and in other parts of the world. The oil wealth in the peninsula Arabia and the promotion of their extreme type religious beliefs have coloured Pakistani society. This however, is not the norm amongst muslim societies. Mohenjodaro, Harrapa is not just a Pakistani historic site. It belongs to the world. Pakistan and the Pakistani state have done its best in its constrained circumstances to protect the site. Yes, there is a deterioration of the brickwork due to salinity in the soil. There have been efforts to preserve these digs but a low water table and salinity are like a slow poison which is likely to destroy what are the remains of supposedly a 5000-year-old civilisation. My own humble view is that the Indus Valley Civilisation is part of an older culture which flourished during the Younger Dryas Period over 11,000 years ago. Whether you look at the classical Indian texts or the old cultural texts from the Middle East we find that Ur/ Meluha/ the Indus Valley Civilisation is all part of a continuum that I believe has existed but been ignored by mainstream academia. Prof. Omar Khan speaks of this in his interview in this programme. The deciphering of the Mohenjodaro/ Harrapan languages is one of the major challenges and if overcome will lead to a better understanding of this amazing civilization.
    Nation states are a creation of the post-colonial project. If Muslims and other faiths whether Hindu, Christian, Jewish, Sikh, Buddhist etc lived together for millennia in the Indian Sub Continent, there is no reason why they cannot live peacefully today. Sadly postcolonial politics has poisoned the whole partition. Gandhiji's vision. Jinnah sahib's vision and I know of my parents and their generation was not one of hatred, ongoing violence or separation. I believe the new government in Pakistan is open to seeing cooperation with India to protect the collective heritage of the subcontinent.

The Aryans who then came after settled in the Indus Valley and the persian plateau. It’s true that PaK and NW india have commonalities, mainly because of the Punjab.
      Exclude the Punjab and we have nothing in common to indians. And even then, Punjabi’s don’t even call themselves indians.

    I request blackcrow productions to start second documentary with unbiased archeologists indologists and linguists with new findings from extreme south of India findings from Tamil Nadu to Rakhigarh, kallibangan Dolavira Lothal and so on and new findings from pakisthan in Sindh. It's our both countries anceint cultural heritage very rich in the world so advanced from findings from 3500 BCE. The sceintifically studied evidences and writing patterns. My language Telugu which is from proto Dravidic root words has sindhi, mundari, gondi, baluchi, paichachi, kuti kiya and many tribal form of spoken languages. My surname has Saini a distortion know Posani. Even Arabs Italians Iranians has Choudary titles for farmers from Afghanistan too. I belong to Choudary community from south. I strongly believe the fact we all are cousins from various groups then. Our gene flow and findings show this. We all are migrations from hunter gatherers to settlers. That's the result of great civilisation mohanjadaro and harrappan. Great contribution is done by the author and producer and it's supporting staff🙏

    Incredibly interesting:
    18:20 the protoshiva seal.
    20:10 that ancient fertility cults of the region predates the dancing girl statuette.
    I’m wondering if they continue digging into the remaining 90% of the archeological ruins, would they find burial tophets such as those found in ancient Carthage & Sumer/Mesopotamia?
    16:50 the trimmed beard statuette traces to Jewish tradition of the time, so they assume that the east of Ur, where Abraham’s forefathers originate, is the Indus Valley. Plausible... but yet another clue they need to keep DIGGING into for answers.

    This is a bit of cultural bias in much of the narration. The old mediterrean (Crete, Akritiri, upper Levant) cities had widespread indoor plumbing, under ground water systems, flushed toilets, indoor ovens, highly sophisticated furniture, mirrors, metalurgy, earthquake proof (as much as was possible) two and three story buildings, extraordinary textile skills, highly developed scripts and religious traditions and so on. I'm not taking anything away from the seriously advanced Indus cities. I believe those pre-planned cities and towns are much older than the sea kingdoms of the mediterranean and also probably had building techniques, water mgmt know-how, occupational skills, cultural script & religious traditions that migrated from India proper and blended with the Indus populations making for a far older, more cultutally rich civilization.

I still remember an image of people bathing in the Great Bath from my textbook!
