Seems like i'll have to check myself in rehab. So much Shug these last few weeks has made me a junkie wanting more and more! :) Seriously, thank you for sharing with us a video about a small piece of metal... Few people could make it interesting, fun and informative, but you do,everytime!!! Merci beaucoup!!!!!
Say, you were on my mind this morn: It's blizzarding and I was cursing my hay tarp when I thought, This is normal weather for Shuge!! Buck up and enjoy it! ---so thanks for the cheery attituuuuuude! Jules
HI Sugh...i got a Fancee Feest based on your recommendation and by watching all these great videos it appears to be your go-to stove. What's good for the ole Shug is always good for me. Whoooooooooooo Buddy
Thanks Shug. I just DIY'd a FF simmer ring out of an aluminum can (thought it might melt, but it didn't). Had to punch a couple of small holes in the bottom to prevent sputtering. Thing works great now. Will be handy indeed. No more burnt pancakes!
Hey Shug, i tested your simmer ring against Hiram Cooks ring, both similar rings and his lasted nearly 1 hour total burn and boiled around 25 mins. in my test on 1 ounce of HEET, the main difference in his ring is that his had not notches cut in it and it was cut 1 inch below the top of the fancy stove with no holes or notches in it, so try that and it will more than double your time it burns.
+shugemery i like to eat either bran or banana nut muffins in the mornings on the trail, so these simmer rings really hel p make those cook well, i made my own stove the other day and tested it, no simmer ring, just 2 bottoms of a pop can, cut a quarter sized hole in the top of one, and fitted the top over the bottom piece, with a windscreen, it burned for ! hour and 10 minutes with no simmer ring, and only 1 ounce of fuel.
@@shugemery I like to have a muffin or sometimes cornbread with some beans and onions on camping trips, so I use a simmer more often. Love your videos, thank you for making these
Thanks Shug, I had no idea that Fancee Feast stoves even had a simmer ring. You amaze me with informative stuff all the time, and that baffles me cuz you don't look that smart when you're being goofy. Thanks for the video, my friend.
Shug, it was 90F here in phoenix yesterday! It might as well be a different planet...haha. That was a helpful because my fancy feast is usually too fast for cooking. Scrambled eggs cook so fast that it's a fine line between just right and over cooked. Stop to wave off a skeeter and you just about ruin breakfast. I usually have to take the pan on and off every few seconds to moderate the temp, which works alright as long as you have an extra hand and don't get distracted. Thanks for the vid buddy!
That's it !!! Now I can simmer without pot stands or carrying the extra weight from the fuel canisters that are required with the rocket stove. I have to see if I can diy something simular (I'm not cheep I just like making stuff. Ok maybe I'm cheep.) I have some diy alcohol stoves the kids use for weight reduction. I see that you use the heat (yellow) rather than denatured alcohol. Does perform better, or do you use it for other reasons? I have seen a video where they got a quicker boil with it. Also thanks for the hammock tips. The kids and I are heading up to the dolly sods this spring. We are making hammocks and testing them around the yard. We haven't slept overnight yet but we will before the snow Flys.
Looks like a good heat level for pancakes or eggs. I get bored by oatmeal really easily. I had been pondering putting a sleeve on the stove and sliding it up for simmer, but this looks much simpler. Thanks for this.
Hey Shug. Just tried my own simmering ring and I haven't really tested it time wise but it definitely slows down the boil. I just made a pot of perked coffee and to slow it down I threw a Mason jar lid ring. Worked like a boss. Remembered your video and thought I'd let you know. Cheers from the great white north. Give it a go and let me know 👍
Very informative and extremely entertaining. Thanks for taking time to do these videos. If you ever plan on a Red River Gorge trip let us all know on the forum. I am Ridge_dog on the forum and we are "All secure in sector 7 ".

26:30 is plenty to dry bake a muffin, not sure that you are interested in that sort of thing, I dry bake quite often at the house but not sure I would want to mess with it out in the wood... Great video as always Shug, I tip my hat to ye =)
The simmer is a wimmer for sure, looks like a thing that you could make from cans, assuming the depth of the V adjust the simmer. Great vid as always. I am off to the woods soon first time in a hammock, just finishing my under quilt, its on the forums. Its going to be very wet, so trying some different drip line set ups to see what happens :) will stick up a vid on my channel :)
What's beautiful about that simmer ring for me would be those times I just want to enjoy multiple cups of coffee or tea and for one ounce of alcohol......I could just relax and pour another cup or two without having to go thru the boil process.....definitely seems relaxing.....great video....thanks a million.....!!!
@@shugemery Looks easy enough to make....I would have never thot of that so you sharing is worth a Whooooo Buddy )))) now I can relax and enjoy my hot beverage(s) .........
I went through a period of dry baking with Imusa and Batch Stovez pots using Smokeeater and Tinny remote feed stoves. Never tried it in the field though. My impression is that the stove would be too hot for dry baking even with the simmer ring, but worth a try. Its a fiddly process.
***** Glad to hear man, I will buy the Zelph simmer ring now for my Fancee Feest. Not a big fan of remote feeds--too fussy. I use the Batch Stovez bake kit. Try the Marie Callander intant cornbread mix, mighty fine for dry baking with an alcohol stove.
I make my fancee feast inner pot holder and simmer rings from the outer ring of a no hub plumbing coupler. It's stainless steel and riffled. The riffled metal works better than flat sheet stainless.

Great Demo as usual! I Love your enthusiasm, and 'gut level' approach to product testing - (education can be fun!). As far as Alcohol fuel goes, have you used tried any consumable 'high octane' liquor grade alcohols, vs industrial grade methanol, isopropyl, ("denatured"(= undrinkable) types), etc. ?.... The advantage to perhaps using some kind of 'Whisky, Gin, Rum, Tequila', etc. might be that it'd be awesome to have some to consume, (for medicinal purposes only, of course! - should an occasion arise!) :D [ignore the 'expense' factor for the most part - just compare the performance, and such, and mention pricing as a final comparison) ....."Cheers!!!" :D
