Wirtual’s idea to get someone to translate all of his stream into sign language and Buckley’s reply that Wirtual is gonna go crazy when he finds out about subtitles made me actually laugh out loud. It’s like trying to give a deaf person a braille menu at a restaurant.
There was a Reddit post a few years ago where someone asked "How do I communicate with blind people? Is there like a verbal clicking that I can use to simulate braille?" and then realized that they could just talk to them
Wirtual isn't wrong at all when sugesting hiring an ASL interpreter. For many Deaf people, English is like their second language, even if they grew up in an English speaking country, because their native language is some sign language (for example ASL). That's why they often prefer an interpreter to closed captions.
so i take asl at university and i thought it was worth mentioning that when wirt put on the glasses to sign "pulling a wirtual" he actually just did the sign for 'YELLOW' right after which is just really entertaining to me also if he really is interested in ASL my biggest recommendation is to treat it like a language completely separate from English. it shares most of its vocabulary with French Sign Language and shares more general structure with Japanese than English. A good example is the English sentence "I'm going to the store tomorrow, do you want to come?" which is translated as aroundabouts "TOMORROW STORE ME GO. YOU COME WANT?" with some room for interpretation between how to phrase the question. its a really neat language and i love my courses in it so much
Wait sign language shares structure with Japanese? That's lovely! And also makes a lot of sense, Japanese syntaxis is very structured and seems easily translatable to sign language
@@rubenbohorquez5673 from what my friend told me the general structure of japanese is "time, topic, comment, question" and that's exactly the same structure as ASL
@@AuroraVeil_ Hmm, trying to be as literal as possible, I'd translate that as 明日、私は店に行く。あなたも行く? Word-for-word: tomorrow, I store go. You also go? Something someone might actually say could look like this: 明日、店に行く。一緒に行かない? Tomorrow, store go. Together, go not? So, not quite the same. I think the biggest thing is that Japanese is SOV, while your example seems to be OSV. ...Since this is probably the rarest word order by a very wide margin across languages, I did look it up. Apparently ASL is rather flexible with the word order, but the standard is SVO - just like English. Either way, very interesting.
I love the sense of humor and dedication Buckley has. The fact he blurred the entire chat as soon as someone mentioned the trigger word. And kept it there for like, minutes. It is hilarious. Buckley is a 10/10 Editors and one of my favorite editors of all time.
Regarding the failure topic, people tend to avoid actions that can bring failure because while they can learn with the failure to improve they'll also know that their past efforts and experiences were not enough to complete that challenge.
To the Editor! This video was super well done, great job! I will say in regard to 17:34 that although the editor's note is funny and got a laugh out of me CCs are entirely different from an American Sign language Translation: They may be using English words, but the way words are used and the grammar of sentences is completely different. Because of this, in general, deaf have a hard time understanding written English and have video translations for many things. Sadly ASL translated youtube channels are basically non-existent, (understandably because of the cost) but if Wirtual wasn't just memein and would actually like to try translating a couple of videos into ASL it'd be cool to see!
In my experience those who don't understand English very well are usually older people. I'm not denying that there are some deaf ppl with some botched up grammar but it's becoming less common amongst younger generation.
Fun fact: that realistic black hole in the background is a plain 3d model without any shaders. The trick is that backside is textured and frontside is transparent. It's like being able to see the back side of a bottle label through clear plastic, except 360.
I know giving a sign name to someone without community approval is very much looked down upon, but I think everyone could agree that signing a W going to L would be very appropriate for Wirtual
As someone who doesn't watch Livestreams I would unironically tune in for a Livestream where you wirtual hired a sign language interpreter to translate what he says or any variation of that idea
I've said for years that we should all be taught a basic form of sign language, just stuff like numbers and "where is the toilet" or "how much for this?" just so that you can travel to any country and be able to communicate instantly with everyone
Buckley hijacking these videos is the best thing that has happened to the channel. Also he should just sneak in YT comments about how good he is into these
Haha as a Deaf guy it was cool to see you try to sign. I'm not American myself so I don't sign ASL natively but I do know enough to understand it. I'm curious to see if he'll continue to learn some more ASL.
