Attended Redeemer Presbyterian Church bet. 2007 - 2011, Tim Keller’s church - he baptized my first two boys. My family and I were founding members of a church plant (New Song) in Harlem. I had hopes of being in ministry - at times leading worship in the apartment of our pastor.
What revelations I had as I began to be mentored in the ministry of just how OTHER the gospel I was being asked to embrace, teach and model. Although I had no institutional theological training at the time I knew the gospel - I had been redeemed long before coming to Redeemer. Suffice it to say that there was subtle friction almost immediately between myself and my mentor/pastor as I grappled with the contradictions of the gospel of the Bible and the “mercy ministries”/social justice vision of Tim Kellers for the city of New York.
After two years of inquiry and at times gentle but ultimately condescending vagueness me and my family left Redeemer and their church plant efforts in Harlem.
This is one thing I can say; most Christians, while they may sense something is different in the gospel presentation and ask of the social justice gospel, most are ill prepared to identify that difference as error and a departure from the gospel of Jesus Christ. Far too many Christians don’t know what the gospel is nor the purpose of the church.
Thanks for this vid. Ultimately God protects His church - that we can joy in and be thankful. 🙏🏾

My son is 21 and going to a very liberal college. He’s a Christian and he is getting completely caught up in the social justice movement. I’m having a hard time convincing him it’s false gospel. We argue about it often. Please pray that the Lord will open his eyes to these things and see the deception in it. This podcast really helped me w/ clarity and some things to point out to him. Thank you for what you do! I’m getting your book!

I flirted with the idea of social justice too when I was in college. The opposition of social justice by very godly people i listened to brought me back to my senses. I'd encourage you to pursue godliness more so that he will see that you can know God better without being zealous for social justice, since social justice is not a means to know God more and glorify Him more. (Well you cant really know God better if you pursue the social justice false gospel). As well as trying to persuade him it's a false gospel.

But in the meantime, please cut your son off from college money if you can, in the name of the Jesus Christ! In 1917 the Social Gospel became pervasive at Princeton Theological Seminary. . . The faculty that were conservative left to create Orthodox Presbyterianism: Gresham Machen, Meredith Kline and even David F.Wells were then keepers of this modern day reformation and helped to create the Alliance for Confessing Evamgelicals in the late 1990's right next to 10th Presbyterian Church. Thank you. I felt like I was having flashbacks from my Sojourners days.
It struck me how time-bound the wokie evangelicals are. Looking at the date on their quotes tied them to to the times they were made ... like verbal versions of lime-green, polyester leisure suits. Ron Sider in 1977 was ripping the U.S. over "unjust social structures" of "international trade patterns," but now that China has the upper hand on world trade, I don't hear him making that issue an essential part of his "whole gospel." Ironically, today, it's Trump who's preaching against unjust trade patterns.
Indeed, trendiness has been the bane of evangelicalism for decades ... pop psychology, jumbotrons and rock bands, positive thinking ... basically anything that has Oprah-fied the larger culture gets adopted by evangelicals (that Oprah is pushing the new book "Caste" even as wokeness is infiltrating the church is no accident).
The riff on the only "real Christianity" being that of the slaves and the poor ... so, what happens to "real Christianity" if poverty is alleviated or if whatever-healing-from-slavery-is-supposed-to-occur actually happens? Does "real Christianity" disappear? Does Big Eva need the poor to stay poor in order to save "real Christianity"?
I suggest one of the biggest sources of systemic racism for blacks in the country is the worthless education they are given by public schools. It affects these kids for the rest of their lives and impacts the next generation. Those schools are owned -- lock, stock and barrel -- by the teachers unions who are pushing the same critical-race scam Big Eva is. Why is it not fighting this systemic racism by speaking against teacher unions or demanding the parents of those trapped kids be allowed to pick the school they want to attend. It might be that demanding Big Eva live out the implications of its new religion by fighting the systemic racism of leftist institutions would put its feet to the fire and show how bankrupt their agenda is.
As an example of doing just that, the president of Princeton recently published an 1,800-word virtue-signaling letter confessing the "structural racism" at the university. So, the Trump administration is taking him at his word and has opened an investigation to determine if the systemic racism-plagued university violated Title 6 when it took millions of federal dollars. Get woke, go broke.
Make cheap virtue-signaling expensive and it will go way. For Big Eva, make it bear the shame of ignoring the systemic racism of the left.

The other line I hear is that social justice needs more than the gospel. When I ask why, they can't give me an answer. The other error is that lamenting and repenting is an action that we "oppressors" need to do to the "victim" but not our own personal sins against God. And they claim that we are to repent of sins we never even committed. Ezekiel 18 says that God only holds us responsible for our sins against Him. No one can take the place of God as judge.

This is so important! Yes, I found myself puzzled when GF was killed and the protests and riots began because everything being discussed was so one-sided. It was being done to such a degree that I sensed that bullying tactics were being enacted (later I found out how true that was!). It was obvious that something significant was occurring and that I didn't understand what it was. I am so grateful for people like you who have helped to educate us about SJ, BLM, CRT, etc. We are in such a crucial time for the Church and our nation that we must pray, ask for wisdom, become informed and respond as the Lord leads us 🙏 I highly recommend looking up Darrell B. God bless you, Jon Harris, for using your gifts of persistent study and breaking down the information within all these trending false doctrines, so that caring Christians can learn these errors and explain it to others! I refer them to your RUclips channel, so they can gain much fuller understanding.
When I pray for you, I also pray for your wife and ask your other supporters to do so and to join in this prayer, as well! Almighty God, We thank You and praise You for Your Light and Word shining so brightly in the lives of both Jon and his wife. Thank You for bringing them together to fight the good fight to lift up Jesus Christ as Savior in Truth through the Word of God as presented in scripture alone! She needs the same strength and covering in prayer as Jon does!
God has gifted Jon to SPEAK THE TRUTH IN LOVE! Of all the fruits of the Spirit, LOVE is the greatest of all! Jon presents the TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL in kindness and gentleness, while calling out the lies and deceptions that the Father of Lies is currently pouring out through the false doctrines of social justice!
The effect of Jon's ministry to test each teaching by the standard of God's Word, is meant to bring false teachers and their followers to the truth and repentance!
And whereas we pray for many to repent and return to the truth of Biblical
Born Again Salvation, those who do not will persecute the truth tellers!
We pray for God to keep Jon and his wife in the many scriptures of God's faithfulness during persecution! The Psalms overflow with them!
Please bless all those who seek the truth and who pray for the lost to be set free from all false doctrine! Then Jesus Christ can set them free by His precious poured out blood and the holy, true Gospel! AMEN

Keep up the fight, Jon! Appreciate your extensive work and efforts in defending the Gospel in a pastoral and insightful way. My husband and I are living overseas ministering to the Chinese all around the world and are currently in covid lockdown. When Breonna Taylor and George Floyd were killed, I started hearing about this from my millennial daughter who was becoming very passionate about social justice. This was all new to me; I was clueless so I started searching the internet to learn about it. Your "Conversations That Matter" was the first site I came to; it was not only extremely helpful but turned the alarm on to what my daughter was leaning toward. Because the social justice theory is so squishy and based on feelings, it was literally impossible for me to have a rational conversation with her. So, as a mom who wants to keep our communication lines open, but lives on the other side of the pond, I pray - I pray that God would use this in her life to grow her faith.

I think what also, after prayer, could help your daughter is finding stories of those who escaped from or lived in countries with Marxism. Their stories show what living under communism is like and can counter the emotional tug of stories like those of Breonna Taylor. Someone should organize some resources.

Thank you for a great exposition of the gospel (15:41). One of the primary failures in the western Church is the failure to test to see if the people are really in the faith; to determine if they understand the true gospel of justification by faith alone in Jesus Christ alone (not by works). We may not be where we are today with the infiltration of wolves touting the heresy of the Social Justice Gospel if the people understood the true gospel of Jesus Christ and understood that it is a "different gospel" as Paul notes.

The church I grew up in unfortunately was overtaken by this and as a result I decided not to attend this church denomination when I became an adult. Unfortunately, the church I have attended for the past approx. 30 years has also been overtaken by this in recent years. The challenge for many of us (me) in listening to your videos is that your view of the issues is so much larger than mine. I am in a church that is not a part of the SBC and does not, as far as I know, have direct influence from most of the authors/leaders you mention. (No doubt they are influencing many of the leaders of my church in some way, I am just not aware of it as their is never any mention of names.) This is a good video for me because it doesnt go to much into the weeds. I understand the need to get into the weeds to fully understand where much of this thought is going but I feel a greater need to understand the basics of what the social justice gospel is , what the arguments are and how I can respond. Anyway, thank you for all your efforts. They are not without affect!!! God bless.

How do people fall for this? It is easier to follow the stream than to go up-stream. It takes determination and commitment to our Lord and Savior, his power, grace, and mercy to stay with him, our only hope for our salvation!

The main problem with social justice is that it reduces the essence of sin to man to man (racism) instead of man’s breaking Gods law (man to God). By reducing sin to a primarily horizontal orientation you have to completely rewrite the gospel into something that will fix the horizontal problem instead of the need of the Savior to repair the damage we caused against God’s law

Of course in this day and age we all want short cuts. So: guilty. What I'm saying is: Is there any way you could produce a condensed version that could be shared? (I know: that all the content is important and that people will watch a 2 hour movie no problem, but won't spend 1:11:50 to strengthen their faith!)

What always infuriates me is when a pastor or other Christian says "you need to earn the right to tell someone the gospel"!! Really? Wonder what they'd say to Jesus when he called the Pharisees "white-washed tombs; children of the devil; liars; stiff-necked people" etc.? I guess Jesus wasn't so hung up on "earning the right" to tell people the gospel.

Jude 4. Over the course of my life time the SBC has gone through many ups and down in their doctrinal position. It is very sad but it is not only in the SBC but throughout most denominations. I am a SBC pastor. I am very worried about all that is happening in Evangelicalism, especially Neo-evangelicalism. By the way Neo-evangelicalism has been looked at by many in Christianity lately as a good thing. It is not! What is the answer? 1. Stay faithful to the Word of God. 2. Stay faithful to God Himself. 3. Share the true Gospel of the Bible not the social gospel. 4. Pray, pray, pray for the church and its leaders. Remember Jude 4.

Just a side note - I have noticed that everyday I am receiving emails from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for financial donations. I rarely received those in the past. I am wondering with the effect of the covid virus but also their involvement in the social justice and BLM movements, that the seminary is being "defunded". This whole CRT is a non-issue all around the rest of the world (writing from Malaysia) so trying to promote a "localized" issue as a gospel issue is merely a huge distraction or fad that will disappear but leave a wake of spiritual destruction.

I don’t know if this is an easy explanation or not, but I get confused when these guys say “CRT can be used as an analytical tool” what do they mean by that. I have heard it over and over again and I’m just learning about this CRT/Intersectionality stuff, so I am not as smart as many of you, so apologies if this is such a basic question, but I am trying to understand. Thank you!

The main objection that I've heard for a soft defense of the notion of atonement applying to non-cognitive entities is, "This can happen, because Jesus makes all things new, including the earth"...or something like that. But we know that here and now, "all creation is groaning" in anticipation of Christ's return. My understanding is that the restoration of anything non-cognitive will be AFTER Christ's second coming. Sure, believers being salt and light in the world will have the positive effects of reflecting Christ where they go, but the institutions and structures are not themselves being atoned for. Is this an accurate distinction to make?

    • @Vankysher

Yes. Jon touched on it in passing when he was discussing Richard Mouw and Mouw's understanding of Kuyper (i.e. Neo-Kuyperian) regarding institutions and structures. Ironically enough Kuyper himself does not address institutions and structures in the same manner as Mouw.

"Jargon, terms and words ..." -- yes indeed. Which is the greater problem: 1) God's church or 2) the general public's lack of understanding of the words "Gospel" and "Grace'? A real grasp and true appreciation for God's grace and the gospel pulls the social justice movement and its many allies into the light; bringing it to its knees.
Preach Christ's positive gospel and God's grace and nothing can stand before these ...

I agree that these people are trying to complicate the simplicity of the gospel. If you are telling people that all they have to do is believe Christ died for our sins and just carry on with their sinful lives is not the gospel either. Jesus wants us to live a sinless life. What is sin? lawlessness! Jesus said "if you love Me keep My commandments". The Son of God wrote those commandments with His own finger. Careful what you preach. You will be held accountable for any soul you lead astray.

When Jesus arrived to inaugurate the Kingdom, his preached repentance as John the Baptist. "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe the gospel" Mk 1: 15. Deep repentance, walking in the Spirit and living a life of practical holiness is the only evidence our faith is real, saving faith. Sin is cosmic rebellion. Against you and you only have I sinned (Ps 51:4). The lack of emphasis on repentance is an earmark common among all false teaching. Deep repentance will always be found among the remnant, the true church of Jesus Christ. You are right on target Gene.
