Always had Airedales, one as a child, belonged to my Aunt who I lived with at 5 years old after my mum passed away. He was my soul mate, comforting me when I cried, playing with me and never leaving me when we walked for miles through the Forest of Dean. Always had rescue Airedales now, one rescue saved me from a potential rapist on an isolated walk and this was only having him for 3 days, another saved us from a fire in our thatched cottage...long story. My son brought his new born baby girl to see us and I was so worried as we had rescued Airedale who was 3 years old and boistrous, always jumping up, grabbing sleeves and totally out of order, told son not to hand me baby, he did, dog backed away, had no idea how he would react to me holding a baby, but was so surprised when he became very placid, watched the baby, did not touch, did sniff baby, sat by baby, watched baby being bathed, did not leave babies side. So very good for 4 days, no jumping, nipping, pulling sleeves on best behaviour. As soon as my son, wife and baby left he was back to his badly behaved self!!!!!! We have another rescue now, he had already had 2 homes, a bit of a free spirit, expelled from puppy school, had him at 8 months now 6 years old, independent, disobedient at times, a big barker, but loving and affectionate and we would not change him for the world!! I don't think there is a better dog for kids on the planet than an Airedale. I don't think there is a better dog period. They are incredible. My brother and I used to raise Airedales.. I once observed a 2 year old child, that my brother's Airedale had never seen before, come up and pull on his ear. The dog just sat their panting. If I would have pulled on his ear, he would have bitten my arm off. He is the same dog that killed 3 German Shepherds that had started to attack a small poodle that was his buddy. This truly is a great video and I pray continued blessing on your family and pets.. Thanks for sharing

ya my airedale was great with some of the kids on my block. It's like they just know that kids are the human equivalent of puppies and so treat them with respect.

The best dog in the world (whatever it is) CAN bite, maybe old, sick, hurt, disease, you name it. So riddle me this: how can a dog of that size be the best dog for kids? How can you say a 12 pound dog is not as safe as a dog of this size, with the bite force it possesses? Where oh where is the logic? I love dogs too, and have long had a fondness for terriers, and this "the King of the Terriers" is a dog I have always admired. Still, best dog in the world for kids? Put emotion aside, and get a dog for a kid that can't take his head off.

I've got mine as a present, I don't know anything about her parents or gens but I got lucky, she is THE BEST dog EVER! Very gentle, very friendly, also protective, if someone takes something from our garden when she is outside and we are not she jumps at him/her and push them, never bites, but when that person come again, she is keeping very close eye on them and let us know always that it is a bad person. Usually some of our neighbors picking the flowers or using some of garden tools :)

She is also very smart, takes her a second to learn anything we want her to learn or something that is in her interest, for example how to open the doors or to topple apples from the three, she likes to eat it :). She is very playful still, at 9. AND, when my father had a stroke she pooled him out of house so that our neighbor could see him and call an ambulance. She literally saved his life, and mine, many times when I had hypoglycemia, she wakes me up every time.

I had a airedale when I was 18 two little girls 3 and 5 used call on him dailey Can Max come out and play. They take him across the road and take turns grabbing his collar lying on his back riding him up a huge hill falling off and laughing. Then it was the other kids turn. On day they were playing when a large english sheep dog came flying down the hill toward the girls
The airedale went flying past the girls he was out weighed by the sheep dog by about 40 lbs he grabbed its front paw and flipped on its back and held it down until the dogs owner and my self arrived, He had adopted those girls and they loved him.

airedales where bred to be police assistants back in UK, I used to have 2 Alfie and Zena, Alfie died last year from cancer. It broke my heart and i almost died with him, athough Zena is still here to comfort me. They are good dogs and love kids. I am planning of taking in my arms another airedale come end of the month. These dogs are phenomenal and very patient and pain tolerant. the very reason why i didnt know that Alfie had pain from cancer and that almost killed me.

Our airedale Scruffy was a huge part of our family for about 14 years. Endless patience with our three small children. Our daughter loved to dress him in shorts and t-shirts. I never worried about the family when I was away on trips. Anyone breaking into the house was going to have a new asshole before he got back outside.

My dog, Dakarai and I were out on a walk one day and this lady who had a baby in the stroller with her stopped to say hi. The baby was wailing. My girl got up on her two hind legs and very gently put her paws on the edge of the stroller. The lady had a fit but all Dakarai was doing was nuzzling the baby. The baby stopped crying and put its hands in her beard. Poor Dakarai had to wait to get down until the baby let go!

I've had 2 Airedales in my childhood. One of them was called Bugsy and she was 1 year older than me and her daughter, Tootsie, was 2 years younger.
My parents are always telling me this history: the first day I got home from the hospital after I was born, Bugsy just wouldn't stop barking, just wondering what my father was carrying. Then he put me in a bassinet really near the ground and she smelled and licked me.

@8270361507 I agree, but I feel compelled to ad this: it also matters when they get a little older, and/or are ill. years ago, I watched tragedy strike when a dog, that had allowed kids to fall on him for years, was just one day older--a little more cranky (probably, like people, had a bad back) maul a kid. Never before did that, but as they get older, things can get dicey, I don't care how good a dog. Kids have strong hands, they can grab, and yank.

Yes they can be great with children, any kind of dog can....it just depends on how well you train them, and most importantly love them and treat them w/ affection. If you can do that, there should be no problems :)

Absolutely correct, Hachiko. Dogs are pack animals, and very quickly consider/accept young babies as new members of the pack. If a stranger were to try to come in the house, I am sure that we would see both dogs go nuts protecting the household, and probably protecting the baby most of all. Dogs will accept a lot of poking from a youngster, and when they have had enough, they simply get up and move away. If a youngster pulls really hard on the dog's tail, it will probably get a vicious growl

From this day on, everytime I cried, she would run down stairs barking, so my mom would pick me up.

I disagree. I was born with airdalers around. Even though my parents were cautious with me around the dog at first, all I ever remember was feeling safe in its presence.
Whatever I did as a toddler, it wouldn't upset our airdaler in the slightest.
When I was 5 our airdaler died and we got a 'new' airdaler, it was the same story all over.
I felt compelled replying to you because he he just passed away. It was a sweet dog, even when he was in a lot of pain he would do nothing but show affection.

Have you spent any time around Chihuahuas? They're mean little ****s. It's about their temperament, not size.
Chow chows are about the same size as Airedales and no one would say they're great dogs with children. Chows have one of the highest rates of biting humans because of their temperament, so it would be wise to keep them away from children (or at least monitor them very closely).
I'd rather have my Airedale around a baby/toddler, with his 0.0000000001% chance of "taking his head off," than a smaller dog with, say, a 5% chance of causing bodily harm- maybe not fatal, but permanently damaging. Of course a Chihuahua isn't going to kill a two-year-old, but it could seriously mess him/her up.
I know my Airedale's temperament and personality and frankly, 0.0000000001% is an exaggeration. Right now, he's not old, sick, hurt or diseased and there's more like a 0% chance he'll bite a child. He's been around babies and toddlers and happily tolerated their tugs, grabbing, slaps and other annoyances.
I have no intention of cussing anyone out, but your idea that smaller dogs are safer is just nonsense. Just because their jaws have 1/10th the crushing power of an Airedale or German Shepherd doesn't mean they're safer.

Anyone watching this video wondering if they should get an airedale puppy and they have little kids… DON'T DO IT! That is what I wish someone would have told me. Ours is now 13 months old, huge, and is constantly making my girls cry. They don't even like him. He is so big and rambunctious he is constantly barreling them over, stealing their toys and destroying them, stealing their snacks when I'm not looking… I could go on. He had basic training which did pretty much nothing to help. When you are a stay at home mom taking care of toddlers all day and trying to keep your sanity - this is the last thing you need! We are invested and committed now and will not give him up, but man, I sure wish we did not get a dog, especially a dog as CRAZY as an airedale! I have had a lab and a german shepherd, both of which weren't half as difficult as this dog. I hold on to hope that he will mature and calm down and turn into a good dog one day, but I'm afraid we're in for some years of tears and chaos…

Airedales can be tough to train but it takes a lot of work practicing 2-3 times a day with obedience training. They also need a lot of exercise. They are athletic so it takes a lot to tire them out. Our goldendoodle (the one in the vid) sounds like your airedale. She jumps and steals and destroys toys. I think any big dog can have these problems... it really depends on the individual dog. Our airedale is super chill compared to our goldendoodle. Good luck with yours!

      ***** Crystal Fetterman
Crystal, I echo Clyde on this. We got our first 'hairymutt' (Airedale) when I was 6 years old, he was already 6 months old and standing taller than most fully grown Airedales. I remember him being a tough dog to train, as they are still Terriers at heart, more energy than most humans can keep up with, and more intelligent than most too, but with that stubborn nature that is typical of most terrier breeds. However, over time he became a brilliant pup, well mannered, obedient without being robotic and a great dog for me and my sister to grow up with. He was the first of a string of Hairymutts that we had, including a litter of our own. And every single one of them was brilliant. They all had their own personality, and were different to train... one was always really enthusiastic, until she remembered she was lazy and just stopped, and our last one (my girl) was brilliant, she was smarter than any collie and full of mischief. She needed to be walked for at least 90 minutes in the morning and 2 hours in the evening. You literally cannot give a dog like an Airedale enough exercise or training... MOST will keep on going until you're knackered! You did make a bit of a poor choice choosing a dog rather than a female though, the males are much more stubborn than the females, and tend to get much bigger.
I understand you have a young child, so it may seem a bit much to spend several hours walking the pup each day, but it is worth it. The bond it builds, the exercise, and the training potential will help hugely. Take your child too, it will help solidify their bond too. Remember a big dog will see the family as a pack, and you need to have the solid bonds for a pack to work.
Whatever you do, do not give up on your pup. He's a family member too... you won't give up on your child when he/she starts turning into a little monster, don't do the same for a young dog. Your input into his development is much more important than his...
