Survival Kit Build - Altoids Style Tin

  • Here is a quick how to on how I make an Altoids style survival kit. This is just a very basic package of several items you can use to make your own kit. As always, a survival kit should never be a primary option for critical survival needs. It is only meant to be a 'just in case' item that, assuming you've packed your bags properly, you'll never have to dig into. With that said, I always throw one of these in my bag first ensuring that I will have at least the bare minimum to start a fire, purify water and start a shelter build. Maybe this will give you a couple of ideas in making your own version of this classic outdoors project:)
    NOTE: I'm no longer selling these as my supplies have run out and I'm considering an update to the kit. As you can see from the video... these are all commonly available goods available from either ebay or big box stores. The tins and vials are acquired from specialty bottle company. All of the other items are either hand made (labels) or modified to fit the kit. You should be able to assemble a very similar kit, if not better, with just a little effort. Anyways, thanks for watching and happy building!

    I like the way you had a box filled with stuff in the tin for a neat and tidy look. Great ideas. I'm actually doing this with the stuff I have lying around my place.

    These are actually really nice little kits. Nice choices. Some of its cheap stuff (like the compass and "knife") but if they're backups that's okay. The stuff that's quality is the stuff you might not have to begin with (like the whistle or snare wire).
    I especially liked your improvised knife, very clever.

    Haha.. that's very true from what I here:) I actually played rugby in the last couple years of college and we had Australian and NZ coaches and I used to do an impression that stuck with the teammates:) But I also liked the kangaroo for the fact that they have a pouch like a backpacker or hunters pack. The slogan used to be "keep it in your pouch":) Kind of corny i guess but i always liked it... and us guys in the northern hemisphere think the kangaroo is kinda cool i guess:)

    I like the matchbox idea.
    One thing I suggest (though you aren't making them anymore, perhaps for the readers of the comments) If you are going to go with a roll of duct tape rather than folding it, make the spool (so to speak) out of a straw that you can stuff things like the zip ties or nails, sewing needles or what have you into, make the spool a bit longer (or cut the tape narrower if you need the space) and stick one of those mini thread spools on the end of it. Make use of every nook and cranny, and your nails and pins and needles wont be drifting about the tin.
    You can take all the stuff out of the straw, put a thread through the straw, hang it to mount your spool. I hate when they fall down.

So add $2 extra if you want a mini ferro rod included. I accept paypal to my email address. Or i can send you a money request via paypal if you want. Just send me your email.

    What a fantastic little kit. I really like the way you use the matchbox to keep every thing neat and tidy.
    How did you come up with putting the Kangaroo sticker on the tin? Where I live the mongrel things have a habit of jumping in front of cars causing a situation where you might need a survival kit ;)

  • @jamesa2492
    @jamesa2492 9 лет назад

    My wife and I have one of these each. We carry ours everyday and I have shown many coworkers. The only thing is the ferro rode is to small to use. I like everything put into the match box. But I would definitely buy a few more of these. I added some strike anywhere matches and a pen.

  • @luiscb69
    @luiscb69 10 лет назад

    Sugestion: Even tough you can use that little wooden skewer stick as tinder (the one used to roll your duck tape)...you allready have wooden matches..so I suggest replacing it with one of those little plastic straws used to stir coffee, they're very tough and useful for drinking out of hard to reach little pockets of rain pools, plus you can have your needles placed inside or whatever

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  10 лет назад

      Thanks for the suggestion Luis! That's a great idea... I'll have to experiment with it... but I think the only drawback will be that when I roll the duct tape I need to have something strong where i can tug on the tape to keep it nice and tight. But I do love the drinking aspect of using the straw for sure! Maybe I'll just incorporate it in the matchbox and use your idea with the needle storage. I'll call it the 'Luis Option' :) Again, thanks for watching and the great ideas!

      Hey Morten, I can do one for you. I'm waiting on a couple items to finish a few more kits and I'll also have to figure the shipping to Denmark. When I ship the kits to the contest winners next week I'll get an estimate for you. BTW, My favorite NFL player was Morten Anderson... who was from Struer, Denmark:)

Also, I'm offering an upgraded kit that will include a mini ferro rod for an extra $2 if you want. Just let me know... and thanks for watching:)

    Those are actually pretty damn bad ass! :D (you humble dog, you!)
    Would it be possible to jam a space blanket in the bottom for shelter and/or a zip seal bag for a decent size water container?
    Honestly, the only thing i *didn't* like about the kit was the razor blade being in there unprotected. i've had those kind of disposable blades before and they are dangerously sharp. i put several layers of tape on the edge just tp diminish the likelihood of mishaps. Those mini lights are far superior to the one i got, as you have to hold it to keep it on.
    You got some lucky friends and family that received those as gifts!

      Thanks greymajickjedi... that's a good idea for the razor blade. I'm in the process of revising a couple things in the kit and I'll definitely take that into account:)
      And regarding the bag for water storage I've actually tested out some baby milk bags but they just took up too much room unfortunately. Anyways, thanks for watching!

    Hi, nice survival kit. I want to know if you could share your survival instructions. Would be nice have the document to print.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  9 лет назад

      +XACA RANA Hi Xaca, unfortunately I don't send the instructions out.. but they are just super basic instructions that I came up with from several of the popular survival manuals... the pics I drew myself (based off of the us army manual). Nothing fancy really. But they are easy to make yourself and will give you the liberty to put the things in there that are important to you. Anyways, thanks for watching:)

    Did you make that little razor thing?
