For those requiring a visual, this is a great kit to copy. We found some stainless steel containers that were sold as "bento boxes." at a DIY outlet here in the Philippines. The included snap-on handle made it a decent cooking/water-pasteurizing container. Filled with items similar to what was in this kit, we were happy with the end result. Our little DIY kits would absolutely get you past a rough spot.
I've eyed those up before, they're available on ebay from both UK sellers here, and as imports from China, so they are available pretty much anywhere in the world, and not expensive.

Omg the playing cards triggered a memory from the 80’s…we were on a field exercise at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida during a hurricane. Not good for a fair-weather, daytime-only gun system…so we had some down time. No one had money or playing cards but at some point I hear the excited banter of an obvious card game. Wtf? I walk over and see the guys had gotten scrap paper from who knows where and made cards, and were using slivers of pine cones as money! Gotta love a soldier’s ingenuity! 😂😂😂😂
The tea bag is the most important item. The first thing you should do when lost in the bush is stop and have a cup of tea. Often by the time you've had a cuppa, you have figured out where you went wrong and made a fresh plan.
Thanks for the video. I have used the military version of this kit and had the great experience of doing one on Bob's advanced courses in the Pilbara. He teaches many other skills as you might imagine. We lived for 3 days off the land using the civvie version of the kit, basically the same. Well considered and repeatedly tested and used in the outback, a good kit. The knife in my original tin was Smith & Wesson, I think they still are same manufacturer, but unbranded. One or two issues:- the tin leaks, or did, don't know if that's been fixed. You will need to use another container if you want a hard container. These days I just keep a metal bottle and nesting cup on my belt, and the kit contents modified for me are distributed through my pockets. The Condy's crystals can be used as an alternative to bleach / chloride tabs for water purification. Also good as a disinfectant. Bob used to joke the cards were the most important thing in the kit as he guaranteed if you started playing Patience/Solitaire, it would be no more than 15 mins before you heard a voice say "Red 10 on the black Jack".
I remember going into Aussie Disposals when I was just a teenager and seeing the "Bob Cooper's survival kit" drooled over that $60 thing and thinking I could survive anything 😅 Looked exactly like this too
You can also use the "Cody's Crystals" as a purifying agent for water, and it oxidises iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulphide into particles.which can then be filtered out the water, they can also be used in a solution to disinfect wounds.
Bob still sells that as a civilian version and is the kit you get if you do one of his courses. So good to see that he practices what he preaches in use of kit.
reminiscent of the pocket kits we carried in the 80's that were based on the Royal Marines Commandos kits. Fit in an Altoids tin or more commonly a PX soap dish, which were a little larger. We used a large rubber band around the outside to keep it from self-destructing in the jungle/water/airborne ops. I love how things have become so much smaller since then, and the added small multitool. I have several Gerbers from knife kits that have found their way into my pocket kits.
You can still buy these from adventure stores here in Australia, the new version. They are about 70 - 90 AUD. Hello from the Blue Mountains on the outskirts of Sydney and thanks for the review.
Hi Andrew, greeting from Australia 🇦🇺, thank you for your time to make these videos, you have water purification in kit , condys crystal, muti use. I have used this kit and very formila with it. It goes cup canteen set, and a space blanket, in which you should have.
On one channel, a woman showed how waterproof a unlit matchsticks by applying some nail vanish to half the length, then putting it in water. After that process, she lit the match and worked. Good job from her.
Those boullion cubes will be just fine as long as you make your soup with BOILING water , they do go soft and mushy but are still perfectly edible as long as you use boiling water. That tin can be used to make char cloth and you should magnatise your sewing needles so you can use them as a compass.
A sewing tip: it can be difficult to get a needle through thick fabric. Use your leatherman pliars to get a good grip on it. I find much easier to get the needle through the fabric this way.
@@Surv1ve_Thrive Right; the technique is to grip the needle close to the point, so the bending moment is minimized. Gradually work the needle through the material, inching the pliars bit by bit back towards the eye.
Xlnt review of Aussie kit.I'll bet 1 of those cubes is Vegimite, lol! The soft inside of the lid can be used for tyeing the hooks, making flies, etc. That was interesting & fun,to come up with our own idea's. Cheers Mate, lol!
Potassium permanganate will treat water from what I've learned. Although not the best , it is an oxidizer . It will remove some bad properties, including odor . Probably intended to be used in plastic bag.
The original Bob Cooper kits with the small, double edged knife were better quality. The ferro rod just had a hole in it for the lanyard as I recall, with a bit of actual hacksaw blade rather than the spatula scraper, and more wire IIRC. The big killer was the Aussie knife laws which killed the original blade. I've seen that model of multi-tool- the blade isn't the worst grade of chinesium but it's pretty close, as are the rivets, which will be fine for cutting the wire moving a pot but they can't take much abuse. The playing cards weren't there in the 90s, and I seem to recall the tin being smaller. This was back when Mr Cooper used to recommend a Ka-bar or similar in a sheath with pouches for a stone and real pliers.
G'day James. When you got to the Glucose tablet I knew it was for fire starting when crushed and mixed 1:1 with the condy's crystals. I am glad you mentioned that later. Condy's crystals can also be used for water purification and to stop bleeding.
Hi, 3 minutes in. Bouillon cubes are in my kit. Not only are they used like codfee or tea as a comfort item.but they also replennish salts you would lose in sweating. Kind regards Alain

A good review, i like these kits, shame there's no commando saw, you've shown they have their uses. The potassium permanganate christals can be used to sterilise water. You have to judge the consentration by the colour, too weak it won't work, too strong it'll poison you! It's a wound steriliser somewhere along there too, good for foot fungus I've just heard.
Informative as always. Remember things like the gauze pads, band-aids, and prep pads--when you finish using them for their primary function, if your are resource constrained, keep them, put the pads back in the packaging or containers and even keep the used band-aids in your fire kit, cause, yep, all these pads and patches will still be useful as tinder
You're being very kind. I have that kit. I had to throw away that multi tool... it broke in my hands. The metal crushed when i squeezed it too tightly and those screwdrivers were flimsy. I guess the kit was more of a guide of what to put in. Bob cooper is one of the few survivalists that was a celebrity and his book is pretty good. Its hard to find survival/prepper books that cater to ausyralias unique fauna and flora.
The multi tool provided is meant to be refinished and sharpened by the user. It’s divided like that so that the sharp edges do not corrode away. Think about how a knife, even if unused, loses a fine edge over time.
That's a really good point. It's also like survival rations and people complain they don't taste very good. That's by design too, because if they tasted like a Snickers candy bar, people would eat them out of boredom and then if a real survival situation happened, they'd have no food. So, they make them taste good enough to eat if you're starving, not bored.
Thank you for this video. Excellent review! If you include a ferro-cerium rod in any kit, it is imperative that you coat it with a goodly layer of beeswax. Otherwise, the cerium will spontaneously combust over time, and what was once a ferro-cerium rod will become a small pile of useless dust.
That multitool looks like a generic version of the Leatherman PST (pocket survival tool) now discontinued. The PST was designed by Timothy S. Leatherman for the US military.
Haha the old Mklll. Great piece of kit and surprised DC gave it away (probably has another dozen at home) I use the modern civilian version from Bob Cooper here in Perth, WA. Sir, a kit from Down Under, Skipper! This container is easily long enough to accommodate a 4-inch mini suture driver, a short forceps, and other standard surgical items for sewing up the more major camping cuts that continue to bleed instead of clot up. Considering that a hospital may charge a thousand dollars just to judge whether sutures are warranted, preparing for some DIY surgery may be sound practice for many people. Also, the buddy system can really come into play if the cuts are in any way hard to reach for sewing, as they often are. I still recommend a combination of Florence Nightingale and Annie Oakley for a gentleman's wilderness companion, plus a good dog. Survival with style, sir!
Be very careful sewing up/closing a wound in the bush. Close a contaminated wound and you get infection, especially if the suture material is not sterile. There is a technique called "delayed primary closure" where a wound can be sutured any time within about 5 days with no detriment to healing. The first few days of wound healing are "preparatory". Often best just to clean a wound and dress it. Suture later when it's clear there is no infection, and you are in a cleaner environment. Remember, sutures are just one method of holding wound edges together to allow healing with minimal scar, and almost all bleeding will stop with adequate direct pressure. Twenty + years of dealing with trauma, I found tourniquets RARELY necessary.
Hi Andrew, greetings from Australia, out of that kit missing 4 aqua tabs, messages ment to be written on back of instructions. It goes with military cup canteen set in which you all should have.
If the multi tool screw driver is not sharp and you can’t sharpen it in the field, use a piece of cloth to use on the end of the screwdrivers to get a better grip.
Thanks mate for posting something Aussie, however I have never heard of this guy maybe he lives over in the west. Some of the contents looked like they were from the 90's as for the multi tool definitely Chinese made and may last awhile lol. The surgical blade is still usable even though it said it was expired good fishing kit always good to have a sewing kit even if the thread is multi coloured lol. The rubber band looked like it was on it's way out so everything is replaceable plus I assume the felt on the upper lid is for noise reduction I would remove it. I also would not have a ferro rod & steel I prefer a Bic lighter & matches . I guess we all have our own specs but if this was the only thing you had in an emergency then make good with it.
GOD Bless you Andrew, for your service in many ways. I have appreciated your work for many years and just want to know what luminous tape you use. Thank you.
The potassium permanganate is intended for sterilizing anything and everything. Wash your hands, clean a wound. A few crystals in a canteen, tastes unpleasant but won't hurt you. The instructions should give a guide to quantities.
