FAIL : How not to launch an FRC ( Fast Rescue Craft )

  • These idiots show us how to fail epicly when it comes to launching the fast rescue boat whilst underway! Not only do the fail at that but they also fail to react quickly to the man overboard situation that follows.
    I am not claiming ownership of this video. I have simply uploaded it to RUclips as it had not been uploaded by anyone to this site.

    I simply can't believe this video and all the examples of poor seamanship there are finally showing the pull out with the wake showing that they steered to port even with the guys on the starboard side of the vessel. I guess they figured if they lost the men they might as well make every effort to chew them up in the prop too instead of steering to port or shutting down immediately. I also saw absolutely no one throw a throwable or PFD to anyone! Amazing and thanks for sharing.

    Any chance y’all can sound an alarm and possibly tell the captain to back off the throttle 😂 maybe we can go get the other dude when we are finished saving these guys? I love how they stay balls deep in the throttle even after it’s a disaster.

    Thanks for posting this video. Drug tests would, of course, be immediately performed on the crane operator, everyone in that boat, the captain, chief officer on deck and pilot, for starters. Why they would even attempt to do that without having a clue as to what they were doing is an important question to answer in the formal inquest to follow, I would think.

  • @gwynmon
    @gwynmon 12 лет назад +3

    Sickening to see the way this happened, especially the way the vessel turned to port for persons who went over on the starboard side AND while another was in the FRC who could potentially be the 3rd MOB.

  • @gwynmon
    @gwynmon 12 лет назад +2

    They may have switched over the hooks and used the off-load mechanism which should only be used for the life rafts. The rescue boat has been lowered to the water (under the weight of the boat) and due to the mother ship making way, when the rescue boat hit the water, she was then being 'dragged' by the crane keeping it under tension therefore making the mechanism believe that the boat was still being lowered therefore preventing her from being let go. Might be wrong though - just a guess!

    First Mistake of all Bow-Line to short, to keep the FRC straight, Line should be fastend so far Forward as possible. Lenght shoulb be that the Line is free of Slack the Moment the FRC touches the Water. All other is Result of the First Mistake

    • @majasarinic1352
      @majasarinic1352 3 года назад

      I agree about bow line,but thre was also stern line not released before vessel touch water.FRC coxwain did not have control of FRC from begining.First step when FRC touch water is to keep him a/s mother vessel with engines,second is to release hook as soon is possible and bowline last.From video i am not even sure did they start FRC engine before lowering.All together disaster.

    The crane has Korean letters on it. It might just be Korean-manufactured ship, but they usually have shipboard printing to reflect the language of owners and workers. So it's likely a Korean vessel.

    • @Thaisamurai

    Putting the engine in reverse its a big mistake in case if you saw the video to the end you saw that the back off the boat is where the mens were and that is because he went reverse so we don't now what happen to does 2 mens.
    In situations like this for the captain first thing is put the boat in neutral and turn the rudder to the same side that the mens were so the back of the boat will go to the other side and the 2 mens are safe for the other first thing is trowing the lifebuoy.

    Two mistakes, secondly: not releasing the falls when they began to broach, but first before that, there was not enough tension on the sea painter to keep the bow of the rescue boat into the sea instead of falling off and broaching.

  • @matthewockwell2252
    @matthewockwell2252 11 лет назад +1

    Consequently, the crew ran to the port side of the boat and launched their other FRC and lost 3 more guys because obviously the last thing that boat should be doing right now is slowing down. I'm still laughing :)

  • @mullieprop

    His place is on the bridge (and he should have reduced the speed). During stand by duties the manning of a FRC could be 3 ABs. In a MOB situation it could be a mate, an engineer and an AB.

  • @Scafys
    @Scafys 12 лет назад +1

    The "fail" is caused by the crane. On this fast deployment cranes, a Constant Tension System on winch is needed. This function allows you to place the boat on water line and paying in/out the rope following the wave movements. This function is needed for few seconds until the boatman starts the engine and can control direction of the boat, another person unhook the boad and they can sail away from the sinking vessel for example.

    • @paulmahy
      @paulmahy Год назад +1

      Wrong. They didn't have a proper painter. This will keep the FRCs head to sea, unhook the single lift, then let go the painter - last.

    He didn't do a turning manoeuvre at all at 1.46, if you look at the wake the ship is still on a straight course.The reason that the stern went away is just the effect of the props when pulling astern.It is qiute dangerous to do a turn when that boat is still very close to the ship and connected. Anyway a lot went wrong, and the reaction of the crew is also not an example of good seamanship.

  • @LordMcMPA
    @LordMcMPA 11 лет назад

    @jeryl1968 this might be a little bit difficult to comprehend but I'll try to use simple words: the ship in the picture isn't your uncle's fishing boat, mate. You can't just "stop" with a ship like this or whirl her around on a dime. As you can see in 1:46 the boat is already pulling a full emergency maneuver, trying to turn back around as tightly as it can.

  • @ferguswalker7345
    @ferguswalker7345 11 лет назад

    if you have a MOB then depending on the ship stopping distance and times are measured in miles an minutes. If you wait until the ship has stopped to launch the FRC then the MOB could already be dead or lost

    • @gattman1983
      @gattman1983 7 месяцев назад

      Feel silly replying to a 10yr old comment, but you're wrong. You should never launch from a ship doing more than 2 knots. That was most of the problem here. Doesn't matter how many MOB's are in the water, the first goal is not to add to that amount by launching in such stupid conditions as these. Your own safety is more important first and foremost.

  • @WiiGeee
    @WiiGeee 11 лет назад

    Well considering this appears to be a drill, sounding the alarm would probably not do much good as everyone is pretty much already at their MOB stations, except the rescue crew who is in the water.

  • @giuseppebarbato1976
    @giuseppebarbato1976 11 лет назад

    First thing to do ABSOLUTELY, after the men went OVERBOARD it would must be WILLIAMSON MANOUVERING, that consist of a turning on the same side where man felt in water, in order to avoid that the stern of the ship will hit the victim and then, only after 60º wheeling, you get full rudder angle OVER SIDE: in this way the ship will come back again on the same tracking of before.

    These people have no idea of geometry.
    The man holding the line attached to the bows should have walked further forward to the bows of the ship such that as the boat dropped the line attached to the bow is tightened and the crane downhaul will not drop vertically but according to the radius of the line attached to the bow which should always be tight as the boat reaches the sea surface, With the line to the bows always tight the bows of the boat will be held in . The hook on the crane is then released keeping theangled line on the bow tight and then this too is released as the nose of the boat is steered out. There was not teamwork and no idea of geometry and dynamics!

    These FRCs should be launched from ship cruising at service speed, kept at hook until they get to ship's service speed then unhook, save the men overboard and then come, hook again and be lifted up, right? Well, I guess the problem here was that the fore part of the FRC had sailed away from the ship due to the poor fellow over there not being able to stop the fore line all by himself.

    Number one mistake, no sea painter. A bow line should ALWAYS be lead well forward and secured to the ship released only by the boat crew when ready. The guy in the red coverall "tending" the bow line had no clue, he let that boat get away from him.
    Number two. When lowering a boat underway in rough seas the hook must be released prior to the boat reaching the water, the boat should drop the last few feet. In this case the main hook was never released dragging the boat under.
