Last year, EFCC, the Nigerian equivalent of FBI, arrested Naira Marley, Zlatan Ibile along with 3 other label mates, aka the "Five Alive" he's referring to in the chorus. Tasked with eradicating corruption, EFCC agents have a reputation for being corrupt themselves. EFCC arrested Naira a day after he released a song titled "Am I a Yahoo Boy?" which openly criticized EFCC and other Nigerian law enforcement agencies. After being released on bail, Marley released Soapy. In it, he's lamenting and satirizing the corrupt state of Nigeria's legal and prison system. As a satirist and critic, Marley is definitely drawing inspiration from Fela, who was himself arrested 200+ times by Nigerian law enforcement agencies for his scathing criticism of Nigeria's corrupt military government in his day. But as a lyricist, Naira is channeling Yoruba juju musician King Sunny Ade, who was famous for his use of traditional Yoruba proverbs and idioms that are multilayered with meaning.
