  • In this video I show you videos shot with the Sony A7SIII. I show you native files and files zoomed in post to show you how 4k holds up to scaling in Premiere Pro. It isn't as good as the A7RIV but it holds up for video better than I thought. Stills did not fair as well. I shot in two locations, Ft. Desoto Park and Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. I give you my recommendations at the end of the video based on what you shoot.

I watched another video made Ryan Mense which also discussed the autofocus issues during shooting wildlife with a7Siii, this video expanded my knowledge on that.
I think a7IV has that animal eye autofocus in videos and if Sony drops that improvment in the firmware update for a7Siii it would fix all the issues.
I will also look forward to shoot wildlife now with my a7Siii and 200-600mm.

Very inspiring and knowledgeable. we are beginners and are working with modest camcorders. Perhaps this is the time to shift. Thank you for your reviews and hope you camera companies send you enough cameras to do an unbiased review. Cheers!

Well done. Have to say though that your video backs up my own experience that video AF is simply not reliable enough to use in most situations so I've decided to learn how to MF for most of my videography.

The AF in video mode on the A7SIII is excellent but the video AF on the A7RIII is not. The A7RIV is also very good for video. Thanks for watching.

Try the touch tracking mode it wont lose the subject as easy

Beautiful catches! I really enjoyed your attempt, just curious to know if you were using touch real time tracking on any of these videos? I dn't have the a7s3 in my hands but just asking due to the information I got from watching tons of videos and reviews of it. Sorry if you have mentioned it in the video and I haven't got. I do think real time tracking of a7s3 shouldn't lose the subject as easy as it did in many of these brilliant shots.

Sorry for the late reply. I somehow missed your comment. I agree about the focus tracking but it seems to be worse whenever I use 120fps and pretty good when I shoot 30fps or 60 FPS. I’m not very happy about it but maybe they’ll fix it in a firmware update. I mainly use the viewfinder for everything so I rarely use touch focus. It works fine when I do but I’m always tracking birds and I can’t do it using the LCD rear screen. I have to put the camera to my eye to track the birds. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the review. A7S looks good for twilight before the sunrise. But does not look good for the cropped in shots after sunrise. I can only image how the A7s would struggle at long distances of over 60 yards with birds in flight.

If you shoot only video it’s great. I’ve decided to sell mine for the way I shoot. Not sure what will replace it yet. Maybe the A7IV or A7RV. I find I’m always having to change lenses. This weekend may be the last time I take it in the field. I think I’m going to box it up and put it up for sale when I get back from this trip. The 4K/120 us fantastic but I found I need to have a high megapixel camera for everything I shoot to be happy and 12 megapixels doesn’t do it for me. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video! What lenses do you use for the video? For example that video with plover bird on the beach? Do you use tripod, monopod, or handholding? Thanks!

I use the FE 200-600mm G and FE 100-400mm GM lenses for telephoto and an FE 24-105mm G for wide angle. Thanks for watching.

Two cameras is a luxury and we are not there yet! In Indian jungles we do get opportunities to shoot birds at a distance and occasions of tigers very close to a distance of say 50 meters. Your recommendations and thoughts on how to best optimize with a single lens will be very useful. Changing lenses is not an option as our window of opportunity is just a few seconds with a best case scenario of a minute or two! :)

Great video! Quick question... does the a7siii have animal eye af in video modes??? It seems like the focus missed a few times and I didn’t hear mention of animal eye auto? If it doesn’t have animal eye auto in video, that would be a huge let down.
    Thanks

The A7SIII does not have animal eye AF in video mode. That’s a feature I hoped they would have and I hope it can be added in a software update but I doubt they will. It tracks very well and I’m not sure how well it would work if it had it.The Canon R5 does and from what I hear it works pretty well. Maybe Sony will add it at some point. The A1 has it but I haven’t been able to get my hands on one yet to see how it works. That’s also a $6,500 camera.

Hi Ron, We are doing well. I have not been shooting very much lately because of the pandemic. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to get my COVID 19 shots and finally received my second one a few days ago. I hope to be out shooting more soon. Thanks for asking. I hope to post one or two videos in the coming weeks. Take care and stay safe.
