Totally get it with Twin Peaks. My friend passed away while I was watching Haunting of Hill House and the whole death/funeral aspect of it was really hard for me to get through and reminded me of him constantly.

Just about every American student, at least back in the 70's, read Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" in middle or high school. It is pretty intense, so it was an interesting choice in an educational environment.

I went to high school in the middle 2010s and we read it then, too. I never remembered that the story was by Shirley Jackson until Hill House came out in 2018. I still loved it in 2013 or whatever year, but now I love it even more having learned more about Shirley Jackson!

I watched it yesterday. I was expecting some kind of gang fighting type of movie so the plot came as a bit of a surprise. I didn’t really enjoy it much, though it was well acted. It just felt like watching typical bikie behaviour.

sue inns This film is brutal, it ripped my heart out. It’s quite a few years since I have seen it but it is seared into my brain. The acting is so natural it was like watching real life.
A horrific film in the true sense. Recommended (be prepared to shed a tear. Or many tears in my case)

  • @Corn_Pone_Flicks

Love Primer. That film could have used a teeny bit more budget, but it illustrates just how confusing time travel would be better than any other film I've ever seen. Hard Candy is an odd one...I enjoy it, but at the same time, it's like high-class exploitation, and occasionally you have to wonder, "How did she pull THAT off?" Twin Peaks season 3 may well be one of the most fascinating things I've ever seen. Definitely not for everyone, even fans of the first two seasons, but it reaffirmed my confidence that no, not everything has been done already. Nearly every video I made last year was an explainer video for that show...there's just so much going on in it.

The film itself is so visually beautiful and the acting was amazing! I have been reading "the making of" books since I was a teenager, and last year the crown jewel arrived: The Making of Alien by JW Rinzler. So amazing how that film came together, and what was supposed to be a cheesy b-movie was elevated to unparalleled art by the most iconic creature design of all time. Once the xenomorph design was "discovered", the look and feel of the entire film changed, and the rest is history. Highly recommend.

One Were Warriors is one of my favorites. Also, I liked Murder By Numbers but there were some things that were watered-down. It's supposed to be an updated version of the Leopold and Loeb case that happened in the US in the 30s. The crazy thing about it was that the bigger deal over the case was not that they had murdered a little kid, but that they were gay. I get that they didn't want to make them being gay a huge deal in the movie because it's a lot less controversial now, but I still think the characters should have been gay.

Always love to see your movie recaps of the month. I actually loved "Unknown" with Liam Neeson, but I know it's not a regular favorite. I remember the trailer made you think it was more of a sci-fi/parallel world plot, but it's just a solid Hitchcockian thriller. That kind of "false marketing" can backfire with audiences.
Here are my horror/thrillers I saw in June:
RATTER (2015, 5/10) - Good premise, but predictable storyline.
NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST (1958, 3/10) - Roger Corman film.
THE IMPOSTER (2012, 6/10) - Found it boring until the third act twist.
    ALEXANDRA'S PROJECT (2003, 6/10) - Definitely not a date film.
TENTACLES (1977, 6/10) - Italian giant octopus film, clearly inspired by Jaws.
THE WITCH FILES (2018, 5/10) - Found footage meets The Craft.
THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE (1972, 2/10) - Classic schlock.
WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST (1958, 3/10) - More classic schlock.
DAY THE WORLD ENDED (1955, 510) - Classic Corman schlock.
    5-HEADED SHARK ATTACK (2017, 2/10) - Seen 2-Headed & 3-Headed Shark Attack, so why not?
SCREAM, QUEEN! MY NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (2019, 6/10) - Documentary about Mark Patton and the gay subtext of A Nightmare On Elm Street, Part 2.
THE LODGE (2019, 5/10) - Visually well-made, but predictable plot twists.
INVASION OF ASTRO-MONSTER (1965, 9/10) - Godzilla classic, also known as "Monster Zero".
ALLIGATOR (1980, 4/10) - Cult classic creature feature, though I've never been a fan of it.
THE IGUANA WITH THE TONGUE OF FIRE (1971, 5/10) - Italian giallo, not a monster film, had to see it just for the title.
RACE WITH THE DEVIL (1975, 6/10) - Road thriller, definitely recommend to anyone who likes The Hitcher.
THE VAST OF NIGHT (2019, 8/10) - Amazing low budget UFO thriller. A bit slow-paced, but can't wait to see what the director does next.
WAR OF THE PLANETS (1977, 5/10) - Italian sci-fi film, some genuine cool scenes.
DEVIL FISH (1984, 4/10) - Italian horror film directed by Lambarto Bava (Mario's son).

I thought the first half of "The Good Liar" really worked as a black comedy (Ian Mckellen swearing was very funny) but the ending was weird, predictable from the start but also very unpredictable at the same time. The flashbacks seemed to come from a totally different film.

Omg. I liked it. I was expecting predictable and i did not see the switch coming. Until half way thru or so. I liked it a lot.

We Are Marshall is one of my biggest examples of why forced emotions usually doesn’t work in films. While the true story is definitely sad, the film plays out like a bunch of people saying “this is sad, why aren’t you crying? Please cry, please”. This is also my problem with Fault In Our Stars. The story doesn’t play out naturally, so I’m left feeling numb about it. Since Stars is clearer in my memory , scenes like strangers clapping after a kiss in the Anne Frank house or Dafoe’s final scene not making any sense, cause that character should have only been a visual interpretation of what she was going through, instead of the very unbelievable idea that he’d physical be there. Forced emotion in films is frustrating, which is why many Nicolas Sparks films, the biggest offender of this, go off the rails in the third act.
One final example of forced emotion is Pay It Forward, a solid film until it’s final minutes.
