Guadalcanal and the island battles in late '42/early '43 were more fiercely fought and for a longer time than I thought. It really was important to win. I can't say enough about the Marine's courage and about the Navy 's boldness in the battles.
It may not even be a ship in either the US or Japanese navies. Number 6 in the US Navy at the time of this battle was the carrier USS Enterprise. Likely just a file pic. I can’t find out anything more about the ship pictured. The video is informative though.

Yes! I was surprised too. But don’t leave out the Army, which actually did more fighting and dying than the Marines in the Pacific.
@@davidtrindle6473 Thank you. I'm going to catch myself up on that. I know that the Army was on Okinawa, and other island battles.
You have to feel for the Japanese engineers cutting that road. The general looks at the map measures the distance and says how hard can that be.
The Japanese used many native men and boys as slave labor. Many of them died or were unalived by the Japanese.
I've always heard Basalone pronounced with a silent "e" not with a hard "e". will a knowledgeable Marine please clarify?

@walterrogers2388 I think it's a large destroyer with 5 inch guns. I suspect it's a US one. A single number 6.
