      That probably would've been the case if Davis had stayed, but he didn't, so Texas can't offer the developmental coaching that made those two successful. Baker, the new DL coach isn't a strong selling point yet. He needs to prove himself as a developer of talent before kids and their families will want to put their NFL hopes in his hands.

    Last year it took a miracle to move to #6 by signing 2 fives and a 4 star and not losing anyone. You can't count on doing that every year. Definitely want to have 3 or 4 spots to get some 5 stars at the end, but The top teams have about 20 recruits at this point and are ranked in top 10. We have 12 and are ranked 27. If having more commitments at this point worked for Saban and Kirby Smart, then odds are it's a smart way to go.

    Exactly. Recruit through the whistle. There will also be senior evaluations and guys stepping up that Texas will be interested in. Sark knew this would be a tough cycle but he chose development and future relationships in his coaching hire rather than instant connection to this one class. He obviously believes Baker can get the best out of the DTs on campus and start making a name for himself this fall then be in position to win some more battles next year.
      Besides, these are all out of state national recruits they've been trying to get. These aren't the 2010s Mack Brown specials. These are hard recruitment and you're going to lose a lot more of them than you win. But in the end is it better to miss on these and go get some older experienced guys in the portal or to take guys you don't believe in just to get numbers in a recruiting class and they clog up the bottom of the roster and never contribute?

    Bobby even for the last 3 years when Texas does have defensive tackles in high school that are good they still don't commit to Texas. So a lack of defensive tackles in Texas is part of the problem but not the sole problem. Ohio Oregon schools don't produce a lot of defensive tackles but those colleges still get them from other states. So Texas is not getting defensive tackles in their own state or out of state. It's a defensive coordinator problem that's what it is.

      @@JohnAdams-vd5dc please show me where Texas is doing well in the NIL game for defensive linemen. My comment was clearly qualified to the DL while you ignorantly change the premise to how Texas is doing overall. Also, this has nothing to do with Kenny Baker. DL recruiting misses this cycle are a continuation of DL big misses from last recruiting cycle. The problem is now a systemic problem and leads me to believe not all the bb’s are in the box in regard to winning these hyper competitive NIL bidding wars for big time defensive linemen. This is about cold hard cash. Oregon’s Nike money is nice, but collectively Texas has more. The only real advantage Oregon has is their commitment to abuse the hell out of NIL if need be to get the player they want and the paymaster at Oregon is primarily one person.

    1. Success cannot be sustained by getting marginal Defensive Tackles from the portal. Even though Bill Norton, Jermayne Lole, and Tia Savea are extremely experienced and could be fair players for Texas, I would prefer if the Longhorns had Kevin Wynn, Zion Williams, and Josiah Sharma.
    2. Regarding Aidan Anding, if he does commit to LSU, rather than Texas, he would be a huge loss. To me, there are three shutdown Cornerbacks that Texas has recruited this class. One is a definite lock to Ohio State, and has actually shut down his recruitment after committing to Ohio State, Devin Sanchez. One did not even visit Texas during the weekend, but instead decided to visit during the week, and actually just committed to Oregon yesterday, Dorian Brew. Aidan Anding is that third shurtdown Cornerback. Regardless of what his decision will be, with LSU offering him, and it immediately changing his entire recruitment, it leads me to believe the young man's heart is with LSU, not Texas. The Longhorns do not need those types of recruits, regardless of how important and how talented they are.
    3. Regarding the four Offensive Line commitments, I honestly don't view any of them as difference makers. I suppose I really need to see the 2024 film of all of these recruits, especially John Mills, because many think he could be a difference maker. I'm still not completely sold on Nick Brooks, either. At 350 pounds going into his Senior season, I think he's too heavy, and what I've seen of his film reflects that. Michael Fasusi and Lamont Rogers are the two clear difference makers that are being recruited, but I'm not sure either are favorites to commit to Texas. This all causes me to think that the 2023 and 2024 Texas Offensive Line Classes need to really be developed by Coach Flood and Coach Becton. Their development and ability to step in and replace Kelvin Banks, Jake Majors, Devon Campbell, and Cameron Williams when they depart the program will be critical to the continued success of the Longhorns. Also, my early absolute must get for Texas in their 2026 Recruiting Class is John Turntine.

    • @DavidKeithWilliams-hg5nm
      @DavidKeithWilliams-hg5nm День назад

      @@vicenzor9699 The three Defensive Tackles Texas got in the portal are definitely experienced. Everything else about them is questionable, except they have been injured during their careers in college and they will not be at Texas more than one year, unless they get injured again. If that happens, I'm quite certain they would be maneuvered from the program.
      The three Defensive Tackle recruits I listed are basically all certain difference makers, and barring injury or some other unforeseen issue, will all be All Conference level players at Defensive Tackle. That is something none of the transfers are, even after six and seven years in college, which is how long Jermayne Lole and Bill Norton will have been in college when the 2024 season begins. Also, it would not surprise me if Kevin Wynn and Zion Williams, as True Freshmen, were better than the three Texas transfers even with their experience.
      I suppose someone that looks at football from one year to the next might have views like you have, but you don't build a successful program based on getting marginal transfers, regardless of their experience, over the best recruits in the nation. Coach Sarkisian was forced to complete his 2021 defense with marginal transfers. Unfortunately, if you can't see that is how he is being forced to complete his 2024 Defensive Tackle and Nose Tackle group, well, you just might be "stupid" and "idiotic."

    Like you ways say, Gerry, Sark will hang around rim over the season, and I'd bet a few flips will happen. If Baker can prove his worth as well as Nansen, and have this defense show put, some kids will see the light. It's just how recruiting works. Right now it's June/July.
    As for DB recruiting, it's time to move on from Joseph and Gideon. They offer nothing and haven't developed anyone. Keeping Joseph just for his ability to recruit Louisiana is only hurting our defense more. Sake NEEDS to hire home runs for the DB/S positions. Taking kids front SMU isn't a good thing. I don't care how many good DBS we have, we should have that every single year. This isn't QB recruiting where you can take a prodigy and then a diamond, with defense you HAVE to constantly get high 4 stars/5 stars.
    Sark needs to stsrt using NIL for defense instead of dropping it mostly on offense. You have to be able to get those premium DT's and they cost a lot, but it's worth it. That's how you win. That's how Bama, UGA, and Clemson (before they began their descent). Sark cos he'd in the SEC, so he can't be thy dense.
    Losing Pettijohn would be negligence. After making the playoffs and winning the conference and moving to the SEC, this hasn't gone well for Texas. Something is seriously wrong.

      I was surprised that they hired Terry Joseph. He had something to do with Kyle Hamilton, but his units weren't great at past stops. Texas should be swinging for the fences with every hiring. I'm also concerned about the Baker hiring, but more because he's a blank slate than anything bad. Texas has struggled to attract top DT talent for a few years now, so if it takes Baker a cycle or two to make a name for himself and get the hang of recruiting at the top level, that could derail the defense in a big way.

      @@burntorangehorn Couldn't agree more wirth your take. As long as Baker can prove himself this season as a developer, I'm good with it. We have bodies, and we have some young bucks who can be good, so he needs to show recruits this cycle what he can do. It's not his fault he was hired 6 months ago and hasn't built relationships. We'll see in a year what he can do.
      As for Joseph and Gideon, yeah, I'd say Hamilton was just supremely talented and Joseph had almost nothing to do with his development. It's like Caden Sterns when. Herman was the coach. He was just that good, and whomevee was his coach had little to do with him getting drafted.
      Joseph has had 4 years to show something, and all he's shown is he can't tell a DB to turn their heads to look for the ball. They seem to regress when they get here. Gideon is just a nothing burder. He's good at checking in on schools and prospects, but his development is trash. When you start Taafe you know it's an issue.
      Sark only signed them to one year extentions, so maybe he's not daft after all. But again, like you said, we're Texas. A blue blood. We should be swinging for the fences and getting dudes who kkow how to coach. It's literally criminal that coach Choice isn't the highest paid RB coach. What the hell is Sark doing? How do you get turned down by so many coaches that you resort to an unknown like Baker? I'll give him credit for the Chris Jackson hire. He's been fire, but that may be an anomaly. If Mukuba and Cole/Holmes don't do anything this year, Sark needs to look in the mirror and realize he's the issue and sign whomever at whatever it takss to get proven developers here. Even if it's Corey Raymond, I don't care. We cannot keep doing this crap with our DB/S room with this much talent in the room. If Jelani Mcdonald doesn't get some serious playing time I may actually break something. I'm more than done with Joseph and Gideon.

    • @guiltybyproxy1
      @guiltybyproxy1 2 дня назад

      @@BigOobie23 I concur. As I said Sark hangs aeojnd the rim and hopefully he can do a miracle like he does yearly and flips some dudes. Losing Dorian Brew and Sharma to Oregon is negligence at best. Joseph and Gideon are useless.
      We have the NIL for DT, so where is it going? Sark is literally using it for offense. He's literally coached in the SEC and knows it's a line of scrimmage league, and here he is just letting Oregon of all places come and take our defense. Just letting Joseph and Gideon collect a check. Coach Choice should be the highest paid RB coach in the country, and he's something like 7th. How is that possible with the talent he's brought in and what he's done? He hired Bo Davis who couldn't recruit, but he could develop. I kkow well get ours, but I don't want to have to go to plan B, and we shouldn't have to. This is Texas, not UCF. He let tel Michigan State DT's just walk away and didn't bother with them. I'll give him credit for Chris Jackson, but maybe he's an anomaly? PK, I honestly don't know. We'll find out how great our edge play is this season, but we need HS recruits to develop instead of hoping good DTs hit the portal. He got lucky with Trey Moore being in our backyard. He got lucky with Nansen, but so far Nansen has done nothing other than get guys to campus, but can't close. After this season it's gonna be hard. We better hope January, Bryant, Tapp, and Mitchell are ready because we have no one other than Hills behind them. I'm trying not to panic, but you can only give someone the benefit of the doubt for so long. This isn't the Rig12 anymore, this is a league where the interior line play is a premium.
      We also better pray Brandon Brown sticks with his commitment, or else I don't know. DJ Sanders is another project. We need guys who can step up and play minutes. It's getting ridiculous.

    I think DL through the portal will probably work out better because they will be better conditioned to play sooner and contribute. If Texas can get high caliber players through the portal for other positions, no reason they can't do the same for OL/DL too. Winning helps.
