I've used Sugru for my helmet mounts, and not a single one has ever failed. Even my helmet that's 4 years old, the sugru adhesive for the cam mount is still solid. Infact I used Sugru to double secure the Custom Dynamics light bar to my Fat Boy's rear fender, because it only had 3M Tape.
Funny you mention that. I noticed that one of bag light bars was coming a bit loose the other day and thought that I should re-install that with a little Sugru. It's a great alternative to tape. Especially the lower end tape products.
Hey since your comment was from not too long ago I thought you might see this, I used sugru on my mountain bike helmet (full face with a chin mount, I mainly ride downhill and I did crash on my chin which may or may not have impacted the chin mount, this was a long time ago though and I kept using the mount after the crash and it was still sticking fine) and yesterday while I was mounting my GoPro the whole piece of sugru just came off, it's been on there for about 15 months or so, I was wondering if this is normal that it just stops sticking or something after a while, how has yours held up ?
@s-p_a_c-e I haven’t had a problem like that. One of my helmets I’m still rocking with a mount I used Sugru on is still going strong after 4 years. Did you clean the surface of the helmet before putting the Sugru on? Maybe that crash loosened it somehow?
Thanks for the video. I just purchased a Chin Mount and I was already planning to pull off the tape that they used. I am surprised that the tape fails because it is 3M VHB tape which is usually very reliable...but I go with the recommendations of so many Chin Mount users and I will use my own. I like this Sugru stuff...I have not tried it yet, but it seems like it would really bond well. My question is do you need to use so much? I don't want a big blob of that stuff hanging out, I want it to be clean like the tape would be. I was planning to use a strong spring loaded clamp to apply about 40 lbs of pressure and that is going to allow me to squeeze out that excess product and then use a soft nylon knife to clean up the edges all around the mount. Let me know if you think this will work or if it needs to be such a thick wad of Sugru. Thank you...and I love the design and graphics on your helmet!
The 3M VHB comes in varying adhesive strengths. I’m not sure what strength they were shipping when I bought my mount. You definitely do not need to use as much Sugru as I used here. I typically like to go thick to push my GoPro out a bit forward on my helmets as I have to twist my cameras to take them off and on since I use a Ulanzi quick release adapter. Plus I like to have the camera a bit further out so that I can see part of the GoPro screen to confirm that it’s on and recording.
I'm considering a chin mount for my modular helmet(ls2 Valant II) should I use this stuff or get the strongest 3M tape? My concern is this dog on Texas heat!! Nice video 👍🏽
I had the same 3m adhesive tape failure with the ChinMount for my new Scorpion EXO AT960 helmet and a Hero 12 Black camera. I'd also read online about the 3M tape not sticking to the 3D printed plastic camera mount, but held out hope that it might work. The one for my helmet has two mounting points and, 30 hours after mounting it to the helmet, it was drooping down under it's own weight (no camera was clipped to it) and had mostly disconnected from the chin mount. The tape stuck well to the helmet, but not the chin mount. So I ordered some sugru last night, and am waiting for it to be delivered today.
Ugh. That Sugru should work out for you. I just used it on a new helmet before leaving on the trip I’m on. 2K+ miles so far in heat and cold temps. The thing is on solid, for sure.
I just had the same thing happen to me! You'd think for a product that claims to be the best in category would provide top tier adhesive! I'm gonna give this Sugru a shot.
The Sugru will work for sure. I just got a new helmet and I’m not getting another mount from them. I’ve also had a problem getting a few GoPro attachments to fit in their mount.
I had the same problem. My mount has two contact points as it bevels out for my modular helmet design. I had not read the reviews but I did use the tether thankfully - though I tether all my cameras for extra safety even if they had not sent one. Mine came off the mount side as well mid ride after sitting on the helmer for 48 hours without a camera and then 30 minutes in it fell off. Helmet side was stuck solid. So I did what I always do - I used my own 3m VHB tape. Never had an issue with it on anything I used it on - until this mount! Now I know plastics and I know 3D printing and I am nearly positive it is an oil issue with the filament they use. Plastics have oils in them which vent off over time. Certain plastics do this quicker than others. I believe theirs is venting very quickly which is causing an oily surface even after prep. After some time it should not be an issue anymore, but how long is unknown. I think I may try the glue you suggested. I'm sure it will never come off then. Still can't believe my prepping and the very good VHB tape didnt work - this is seriously the first failure I have ever had, and I have a heavy dash cam mounted with it on an uneven suface for three years now, hanging weight on the tape, not resting weight.
That theory of yours sounds like the most solid likely root cause that I’ve heard about this. Let me know how the Sugru works for you if you went that route.
Yeah, it's really great stuff. I've had 3M adhesive loosen up in past when I've been riding in the heat of summer. Have never had that happen with Sugru.
My chin mount just fell off. The gopro side adhesive actually came off. The clip stayed on the helmet. The factory adhesive came off the factory mount. Helmet was just sitting there and, bloop. Just found this video looking for a better adhesive. Gorilla has a crazy strong double soded tape. Yes! Same thing that happened to you. Just fell off in my room.
Same thing happened about 5 minutes ago to me. Heard a thump and went through to see my GoPro laying on the floor. Didn't see the reviews telling me not to use their adhesives
I think most of those reviews that I saw were on their web site or in forums. I think that most of the RUclips reviews I’ve seen are by people who’ve been sent product from the company. I always try to provide open reviews based on my use of a product or service.
Yup. Unfortunately learned the hard way that the supposed "3M" adhesive they provide is not adequate. Lost my GoPro on mainstreet in rush hour traffic. Poor thing got ran over and is in pieces. Its funny though chinmounts included an extra piece of plastic with a cheap string i guess i was supposed to tie to the GoPro, but of course it has the same adhesive so i doubt that would have saved it haha. Almost like they know their chit don't work.
Nice to see you back on the screen! Never seen this stuff (will have to see if it's in UK) but looks cool though I would have to put some trust in it as it just looks like it would drop off like some kind of putty 😅
I bought one of their mounts a whiile a go and it lasted about 4-5 months of riding before it started to fall off. I emailed to tell them what happened and they said that they would send me some replacement tape so i can stick it back on. Which they have yet to do. My Cardo has also started to come loose from whatever they used to stick on, So i've bought the 3M VHB Tape to test it out, since it is still kind of tethered to my helmet through the headphones so I do not need to worry about it flying off. So far so good i've had it on for about 8 months now, no issues. Hopefully you'll have no issues as well
Yeah, their site said the same thing when I ordered mine. 3M makes several different types/strengths of VHB tape. Given all of the people who say their mount has fallen off, I'm going to assume ChinMounts supplies the cheaper variety.
@@withPercy the tape on my mount was really loose when I received it, it came off without any effort... so i did not feel safe attaching my 400 euro camera to it. I would still be careful. Replacing what they provided with your own 3M or Sugru solution would be easy enough to protect the investment in your camera. But let me know in a few months if the stock stuff is still working for you.
@withPercy here I am 6 months later and yeah... is starting to fail. I noticed that it's starting to separate from my helmet and on the side with the actual mount, not on the side closer to my helmet. Definitely going to change it out soon before I lose my camera.
@@withPercy I believe I am. If it's as sticky as you say, I'd have no problem having it stuck to my helmet especially going down dirt trails. It makes me wonder if chinmounts isn't properly cleaning their mounts or having a clean enough area before attaching their adhesive.
