Hello Ollie, I would love to get a pet snail but as for actually squishing eggs part, I’m not sure I would have the heart to do so. Would temperatures work for rendering them infertile, such as putting the eggs in the freezer? Thank you!

Either is okay :) the mold needs removed as seen. You can also look onto sprintails. I have some in all of my damp enclosures and they take care of mold of me. As far as fruit flies go, you can keep out a trap next to the enclosure or get a katchy off amazon. Theyre a tad pricey but totally worth it! usually that is fine If you live in the US. I can't speak for other countries. but here they are of least concern. easiest way to find them is to find local gardeners and just ask to come take a look for snails. they don't want them in their gardens so most of the time they will let you :)
@@ExploringExotics I live in the us so I should be fine then I think lol, would I have to worry about any like diseases or any kind of germs that could hurt me?
@@yourbunnygirltay1421 not really just make sure to wash your hands after handling and you should be good. If you want to deworm you can do that just in case. Ofcourse remember that wild caught snails can always have an underlying health problem and can be older than expected
Its up to people if they wanted to pet any types of animal as long as its not harmless to other people, ofcourse having pet some uncommon animals or other types of species comes for a risk but let us say that people are already well aware of those risk and consequences that might happen..
Yes. People are allowed to have whatever pet they want (if its legal of course lol) I disagree that people already know the cons however. I have kids on my channel and I usually make content promoting these pets and their care. So I feel lile it is important to also provide why they might not be good pets for everyone. Not every pet would vibe well with every person. And it is good to acknowledge that some people like pet snails in theory. But in practice, they would not enjoy their pet
My neighbor has ducks and lets just say that I never have too many snails... It feels a lot better then like smashing them or throwing them in the trash.
Also, if you are crushing the babies, do you freeze them before hand? And would that make them dead/unconscious like meal worms or crickets before you cook or in this case crush them so that they don't feel pain? I think that's something I might try if I ever am over burdened and my decollates can't keep up
So studies are showing that snails do not really feel pain like we do but they do feel stress. freezing living snails is extremely stressful and is considered inhumane. Eggs would not feel it which is why it is acceptable but live snails at any age should be crushed. it is easy to crush the smaller ones since they dont have very strong shells however if you do want to sedate them or you have a larger snail that needs euthanized, then you can give them a beer bath before hand. ofcourse if you crush try to make it a solid and quick one and done crush to avoid them experiencing the stress or potential pain
Sure! Odds are its a milk snail! But you can send it over on Instagram if you want :) if you cant do that then i can give you an email address to contact
You should not do a full substrate change for them since brand new soil and no old soil can cause shock and snails get beneficial bacteria for their gut biome withe old substrate. Just spot clean the poop when needed and if you really want to you can do a partial change :)
I do. I have a toad and have a couple of care guides on them. it can depend on the species of toad though. I have a guide for Fowlers toads and American Toads
Hi so I have a question is there male and female snails? Because I know some animals there isn't male and female but they still can have eggs and if there is female and male could you keep two females or two males and not have a problem?
I have a question! So my boyfriend lives in the city and i found 3 giant garden snails by the road. I've never seen snails before so I got excited and I wanted to give them a better life so i was gunna take them home with me (i live in the country) i was gunna release them by a pond with tons of plants and soil. But I googled it and it says it's bad for the environment to release or relocate snails?? I didn't know that until after. the thing is I've only had them for 2 days is it still bad to release them to a better place? I didn't wanna fuck up the environment by relocating them so i just bought a whole tank and decided to keep them but then I realized they mass breed. i realized I might have to kill some. I can't do it I will not be able to kill any. I already have a whole set up I spent 40$. I don't really know what to do with them after realizing this information. my question is what if they do have babies what do I do?? because I refuse to kill any and I don't think I'm allowed to release them. hypothetically if I ever have to get rid of them what do I do without killing ?
If theyre a specie of garden snails they will usually cull themselves. With the healthy babies you can try rehoming. Just make it clear to whoever you are rehoming to that they may be runts and that you dont cull. Dont charge for this since it is unethical to sell runts. You can also find them as eggs and freeze or crush the eggs. They will not feel it as eggs
is there a land snail that doent lay eggs ? i absolutely love snails and want to protect one and keep it safe, but killing the eggs would just break my heart
If you don’t want the eggs, you just squish them, they aren’t even alive until like week 1 so there aren’t any snails in the eggs until maybe a week as i said
Do snails have parasites? Can I get sick from touching them or cleaning the enclosure? I always wash hands, but I've read a few things saying you can get worms and other parasites from taking a snail from your garden and making it a pet.
Hiya! They can have parasites. But shouldnt transfer anything to you as long as you WA ah your hands after handling and dont eat them :) I have a video about parasites and I have one about snail keeping myths and talk about it there as well ❤

@@ExploringExotics ok update my snail is in a bit bigger area with potting soil he has a 2 hides one kinda under ground and on under a stick and i have a question tho do snails have to have a heat lamp cas i like my room cold and im worryed that it can hurt it
Make sure the potting mix is organic top soil. You can mix it with eco earth too so it has a better consistency :) For temps, room temp is good. I also lile my room cold so i have a small heat mat on my enclosure just in case. Put it on a thermostat (maddie smith has an excellent video on them and why theyre important) set the thermostat to room temp and it will keep it regulated for you :)
@@ExploringExotics sorry if im asking so many questions, but how long do thay live and 2 what can i not feed them i know salt can kill them and how do i clean there area and the snails? and thanks u helped me alot!
@Lilliann sata its ok im happy to help :) How long they live depends on the species They shouldnt eat citrus, salt, grains, I would only give cucumbers as an occasional treat. Snails can get addicted and only eat that. Dont for get their protein weekly For cleaning, spot clean only for the most part. Snails rely on the beneficial bacteria for a healthy gut biome. Full changes are bad and can shock them. So if you do changes then do 1/3rd at most. Do turn the soil though! Ofcourse if there is something harmful in your soil, you should do a full change
i need help i have a garden snail i’ve had for about a month and it hasn’t laid eggs yet so is that bad?… also i never gave it cuticle bone and heard if u left them on the concrete they can get their calcium that way is that true?
Mine dont lay eggs too often without a partner. You definitely need to give some cuttle bone. Im unsure or the concrete thing but cuttle has a lot of calcium, they can self regulate on it, and its cheap and clean
What should I do if I keep a snail somewhere I don't live i only go there after school and not on weekends so is that alright for my snail (it lives in the garden tho)
Hi there! I'm Ryan and I'm interested in buying an African Land snail but I'm allergic to soil of any kind, I was wondering if a fake grass carpet for reptiles would still be fine for them instead of soil? (I would keep it humid and spray it daily to keep a nice humidity in the enclosure).
Im not sure. Ive never looked into that before. If you can, try a GALS group on Facebook and ask there. Lots of knowledgeable people there. Best of luck!
Man I wish! I live in the US and unfortunately can't have GALS. So I just have to live vicariously through other youtubers and be content with my garden snails
What snail species can you cohab? I have achatina iradaleis and Helix pomatias but they Area currently in separate terrariums. Also, what live plants are safe in snail terrariums and are there any wild plant I could give to my snails?
Im not familiar with achatinas but my helix aspersums do great with others and I believe that pomatias are okay with most snails too. The ones you need to worry about are snails that eat a high protein diet
Ivy, strawberry plants, ground ivy, creeping Jenny, moss, spiderwort, i think basil, asparagus fern, i think most ferns, radish, pothos are some good ones that I have heard of. There are more answers in the Facebook groups I linked in the description. You can search the term "plants" in the groups and get tons of ideas!

I’ve kept garden snails since I was 5 and I’m 14 right now. They are right about the euthanasia when snails get sick. The most painless way to kill a snail is to place it on the ground outside and slam down a big rock. It’s difficult and emotional but u gotta do what you gotta do.
Hi, so I found this snail outside, and it’s a bulimulus Sporadicus! It’s about 2 cm long and I have no clue on like…how to start a habitat for it. I could it on my fence and I got attached to it and it was very dry so I got it water and it survived. I would love to keep it as a pet. Could you help?

Thats great that you arent deterred! But some people need to know the bad parts of snail keeping. Like culling and vet care and what not. Its important for any animal to be talked about in a more negative light before getting them as pets :) I love my snails but the culling almost did it for me personally My points werent all mine. @@ExploringExotics I have more questions. I csnt tell the sex of my snails but even if they do produce a few babies, the babies don’t be mature for 2 years and can’t exponentially reproduce right. Also what can I give them for protein and how much calcium power do they need and how do I give it to them.
@@gregorychew3560 snails have both reproductive organs and can reproduce with any partner or by themselves. The babies growth depends on the species and how easy it is for them to get food. If babies do hatch you have to watch for runts. They will not live good lives and should be humanely culled. I do have a care guide all on garden snails. I went in depth in it and tried providing all I knew on them including their diets and calcium ❤
@@ExploringExotics thanks for your help. I read that the babies will eat the eggs for extra calcium. I tried crushing egg shells to give them for calcium but I couldn’t get it fine enough. I’ve been giving them carrot shreds and peeled grapes for 2 days but I guess they don’t need to eat everyday. They seem to stay in the castle a lot so I’ll get leaves and maybe an ivy for them to chill. I have 2 so far and I saw a third outside but didn’t grab him because I’m afraid of too much breeding. I was planning on making a terrarium and I thought it would be cool to put snails in it - after learning about the culling and more concerningly the fruit flies, I've realized it isn't a good idea for me! (also my boyfriend vetoed it when he heard about the flies lol). I'm so grateful I saw this or I probably would've got them and then had a major problem with overpopulation, fruit flies, etc. Thank you so much!! :). For now I will be content with my plants and cats
Hello Ollie, I would love to get a pet snail but as for actually squishing eggs part, I’m not sure I would have the heart to do so. Would temperatures work for rendering them infertile, such as putting the eggs in the freezer? Thank you!
Hi! you can absolutely freeze the eggs. I would just pop them in the freezer for 24-48 hours and it will cull anything inside. I just would not recommend doing this with already hatched snails
Oh man.. i wish my snails liked a variety of different foods... they just keep going after the carrots lmao
I feel that 😂 one of mine is sooo picky! He only goes after dandelion greens
Try to remove the carrot, they'll eat the rest they just won't cuz they have the options

Thank you for this video. I was talking to a lady about getting large snails and now I have decided not to. I appreciate this. I had very little info.
The mold and fruit fly thing is my biggest concern. I live in an apartment so they'd be either in the main space near the kitchen or in a bedroom. Is either area sanitary then? I don't wanna put em in the laundry room, the poor babes don't need all that thumping and detergent smells around em
I keep mine in my livingroom currently but they have been in my bedroom before :)

usually that is fine If you live in the US. I can't speak for other countries. but here they are of least concern. easiest way to find them is to find local gardeners and just ask to come take a look for snails. they don't want them in their gardens so most of the time they will let you :)

@@yourbunnygirltay1421 not really just make sure to wash your hands after handling and you should be good. If you want to deworm you can do that just in case. Ofcourse remember that wild caught snails can always have an underlying health problem and can be older than expected

you can roast your soil in 100 c in oven for fruit flies. It helps A LOT.
Ive done this a couple times for soil mites

Its up to people if they wanted to pet any types of animal as long as its not harmless to other people, ofcourse having pet some uncommon animals or other types of species comes for a risk but let us say that people are already well aware of those risk and consequences that might happen..
Yes. People are allowed to have whatever pet they want (if its legal of course lol)
I disagree that people already know the cons however.
What tools do you use to cull them?

Do you have to change a snails dirt every weekend
Because my snails poop a lot so i guess i should just change the dirt every 3 days.
You should not do a full substrate change for them since brand new soil and no old soil can cause shock and snails get beneficial bacteria for their gut biome withe old substrate.
Just spot clean the poop when needed and if you really want to you can do a partial change :)
is it unethical to put extra snails in the garden of a neighbor you don't like?

Hi so I have a question is there male and female snails? Because I know some animals there isn't male and female but they still can have eggs and if there is female and male could you keep two females or two males and not have a problem?
Research the species. Most land snails can reproduce asexually
Thank you so much for the information
Great tips Ollie!

Make sure the potting mix is organic top soil. You can mix it with eco earth too so it has a better consistency :)
For temps, room temp is good.
@Lilliann sata its ok im happy to help :)
How long they live depends on the species
They shouldnt eat citrus, salt, grains, I would only give cucumbers as an occasional treat. Snails can get addicted and only eat that.
Dont for get their protein weekly
For cleaning, spot clean only for the most part.
If it lives outside in the garden it should be okay on its own :)

Im not familiar with achatinas but my helix aspersums do great with others and I believe that pomatias are okay with most snails too. The ones you need to worry about are snails that eat a high protein diet
Im at work right now so when i get home i will get you a list of safe plants 💕
Ivy, strawberry plants, ground ivy, creeping Jenny, moss, spiderwort, i think basil, asparagus fern, i think most ferns, radish, pothos are some good ones that I have heard of. @@tuomi1154 let me know what you find 😊
I’ve kept garden snails since I was 5 and I’m 14 right now. They are right about the euthanasia when snails get sick. The most painless way to kill a snail is to place it on the ground outside and slam down a big rock. It’s difficult and emotional but u gotta do what you gotta do.
how do you know when your snail is sick?
hmm i got a snail and my family keep saying it not safe and i might get diseases from it or skin fungi idk is that true ?
