    Highlights as USA win Bronze in the Women's Team Epee during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
    Fencing was included for the first time at the 1896 Games in Athens, and has remained on the Olympic programme since then. The women's fencing competition entered the Games in 1924 in Paris. Today, men and women compete in individual and team events, in which three types of weapon are used: foil, epee and sabre. The foil was, at first, the only weapon used by women, until the 1996 Games in Atlanta, when women's epee was introduced. Women's sabre appeared for the first time on the Olympic programme in Athens in 2004.

    • @TheWhiskyDelta
      @TheWhiskyDelta 6 лет назад +46

      Female fencers tend to spend more time jockying for distance and position, while male fencers are far more likely to rush in aggressive. It's especially noticeable in sabre, as the male matches tend to be hits as fast as possible from the start, while female tend to spend a second or two jockying first before striking.

    • @kinglion2546
      @kinglion2546 3 года назад +1

      @@alexanderleeart You could say that, I personally don't find it as entertaining. You can definitely see the difference in the 2016 individual epee for men vs women. The women's match involved many wrist hits, and close-quarters combat, while the men had way more advancements, double-advancements, foot touches, and much more. You could say the technicality of women's fencing may be entertaining for a fencer, but for a spectator who has never fenced, they would definitely find more enjoyment in men fencing.

    That's not the priority selection sequence...that's the Sivkova testing her weapon to make sure it's working before fencing. It happens earlier in the bout as well, and is fairly common.
    The speed of the lights changing is not something that slows down as it gets near selecting priority...it flickers at a regular rate and then STAYS ON GREEN, indicating selection of priority.

    Never seen this match before. It makes me wonder, what are the coaches teaching these high level epee fencers? Hardly any touche was scored with a parry riposte. They wait and wait to attack, and the opponent reaction is counterattack.

    • @wezurii5096
      @wezurii5096 8 лет назад +2

      My coach told me to not get in that position in the first place and keep them at a distance. though retreating is okay when used in trying to trick your opponent. just differences in techniques I guess.

    • @gandalf1269
      @gandalf1269 8 лет назад +2

      Aren't you wasting a foot tempo retreating out of infighting though? I mean sometimes your opponent will crush the distance and there's not much you can do about it.

    • @wezurii5096
      @wezurii5096 8 лет назад

      you're right, but then again, it is up to you to maintain your fencing distance to the best you can. The way I fence doesn't get me in may close engagements so I'm going to just spout some nonsense.
      If Your quick enough you might be able to seed your opponent's sword while retreating to better position yourself, though i reckon that's almost impossible from infighting.

    • @gandalf1269
      @gandalf1269 8 лет назад +1

    I don't think you're looking at the same vid I am. The priority light clearly is green, for the right, which was the US (54:07 on THIS vid. The one you referenced is the same vid, along with other matches. I have no idea what Natural Sound means). The ONLY following on red light was on the double touch.
    Further, there is a graphic indicator on the US side of the screen (although it looks like a yellow card indicator), and the commentators got it right....you are wrong.

  • @Shadow_King-
    @Shadow_King- 5 лет назад +1

    I find it slightly agonizing how they spent so very very long shuffling back and forth both trying to play defensive, like test the waters a little bit, see how they react if you move in, faint and try another angle, do something at least

  • @homfencing
    @homfencing 11 лет назад

    Dude...the red and green lights flipped back & forth until the machine SETTLED on green....that's how a machine makes the selection. There was NO red light after the strip lights settled on green.

  • @homfencing
    @homfencing 11 лет назад

    Thanks...I didn't even see that option.
    Yeah....the announcer in the venue got it wrong. The lights indicated the US.
    If you go to a tournament using a scoring box that does the determination (the Virtual Scoring Machine does) you'll see how it works.

    • @bubbybumble616
      @bubbybumble616 Год назад

      I'm 4 years late but the goal is just to hit the other person first (40 millisecond window of time where both can score, since it's epee and weird). Generally, attacks that look like they are only at 80% of their power are meant to be feints/false attacks and are to instigate a response either as a parry that doesn't find the blade or a counterattack that will open up target area. So in a way, yes the goal can be to force them to miss, but since there's no priority rules in epee it's more about getting them to attack poorly so you can hit them first.

      krokodil The swords used are actually quite stiff and you can tell for the fact that they spring back into position after they bend them.
      Remember the reason for the swords looking flimsy or wet noodles is due to the fencers wrist strength allowing them to bend in the way they do.
      Professional fencers will use the stiffest blades available to increase point control.

      I'm sure many athletes would be more clean and traditional if they could, but the way that modern rules are set up it benefits having more offense than defense

      they should make the swords heavier again, the saber and epee used to be much heavier, not waving around a little feather.

    • @dudeofvalor9294

      maz 90 When did they change the weight of the swords?

    • @samuelnguyen106
      @samuelnguyen106 7 лет назад +3

      +maz 90 I don't think you realize how impractical that is. Also dangerous? You ever tried lifting those swords? It's not sloppy. It's technique.

    I don't like to see the mask designs. I think it's an unfair advantage & only serves to garner favor or distract others.
