My wife and I were blessed to have spent a night inside Mont St-Michel. We have never known such peace and serenity both viewing the sunset and sun rise from our little balcony while the bells rang and the constant chirp of birds filling each tree. I love to visit my video in which I kept the camera recording during these times and when I need peace these days, I play that recording and it soothes my soul. Thanks for reminding me. Time to put that video on so I can remember the love we shared there before she died of cancer. Not surprising, my wife's name was Michele.

This is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your memory with your wife. My dad and I visited in 2014 and also stayed one night. I wish I could recall the name of the place we stayed and had dinner that night (a galette and calvados). I think about that trip often. And so much now because my dad passed away 6 months ago and I feel nostalgic missing him. It was the most magical and serene place I think I may have ever been. Especially the church and monastery. I too think of the bells and the sunset view and early morning tide. If anyone is reading this and debating spending a night there do it. Life changing. The tourists all leave and you have all of Mont St Michele to yourself. ✨

I was privileged to visit Mont St-Michel when I was a sophomore in high school, 40 years ago this spring!! It's still as thought-inspiring, beautiful, and spiritual as I remember. I purchased a gargoyle from one of the shops and still have it. I've displayed that thing in every place I've lived and I've moved at least 12 times in 40 years. Thank you for bringing this memory to life for me once again.

I too was privileged. I went there in 2013 with my brother and our high school French class in the summer after my sophomore year. Over there I bought an animated comic book explaining the history of Mont St-Michael in French (thought it would be an amazing souvenir)
At the time I only been in French class for one year and I couldn’t read or understand 90% of the book. Today I can read and understand it after reaching the C1 level of fluency in the French language. It took me 8 years but this place and the memories I made over there kept me motivated to learn French. I still dream of returning to France and Mt. Saint Michael one day

I forst visited France, including Mt. St. Michel, my senior year in high school. And then, I studied in Angers for a month, followed by a year in Paris at the Sorbonne, during my junior year in college. While studying in Angers, our international group of students made weekly excursions to various castles along the Loire, and also visited Mt. St. Michel and Mt. St. Malo. It's still the best, most beautiful year of my life. Unfortunately, nothing has really compared to the wonder and beauty of that year, but at least I've traveled to Europe multiple times thereafter, and hope to see more of the world before my ashes are scattered about it.

I did too, 3 week exchange. 1983 Blizzard snowed us in at JFK airport for 3 days; so it cut into our time in Brittany, but we were still able to spend the entire day here. Favorite memory. Skip Paris, I say, lol this area is Beautiful

1:48 when heard this beat this just started going off in my head:
There once was a ship that put to sea
The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea
The winds blew up, her bow dipped down
Oh blow, my bully boys, blow
    Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We'll take our leave and go

Good job, Rick! and you covered it well. I know time is limiting, so I'm adding the Bayeux Tapestry scenes 16 and 17. I've visited it and found some very quiet places...The trick get above the lower level, as you know. And some Bretons would say it's still part of Brittany, but it matters not, a lovely place. You did a wonderful job.

think about how hard this place would've been to raid not only would it be near impossible to get any sort of siege equipment across those mud flats especially with the tide being a constant threat but even if you did manage to get in you have to go through a long tedious gauntlet that you'd have to climb in a full set of army while fighting off defenders you'd probably be so exhausted by the time you reached the top that all someone would have to do is push you backwards down the stairs

Maybe somebody can help me with a memory from a visit to Le Mont St Michel. I was 17 and we went into a tiny building that had a shiny white round table. The guides spun the top of the table around so that it was constantly spinning, like a top or a merry-go-round. Suddenly, images of what was going on outside the little room were projected onto the table, like a periscope, but projected onto this spinning table top. Does anybody know anything about this?

Every time I see a video saying it part of Normandy, I have to chuckle a bit. Just a little piece of local debate that isn't always talked about.
