Loved your transcription/arrangement for this! Just letting you know, I posted my own cover using your arrangement today. I referred to your original video.
This is a masterwork music. All musicdwarfship is of the highest quality. On the music is a theme. The theme menaces with spikes of piano. The theme relates to the opening of Dwarf Fortress.
@Mr Penguin It's a reference to the description of some items that your dwarfs can craft in the game. Oftentimes they will say something like "X menaces with spikes of Y"
I feel that this melody has "intentionally discordant" notes that convey a sense of discomfort or uncertainty that synthesizes very well what is dwarf fortres in the sense that you never know what is going to happen and your characters are small pawns in a very big world. This melody fits well if things are marching in a good way (since it has nice or optimistic moments but the melody is never totally cheerful, since at any time can go everything downhill) and it fits very well if your characters are in the situation in which they should kill their dear pet dogs, cats and/or horses as a last resort to survive that winter and that while they do it still so may not be sure to be able to achieve it or if it is worth keep going (since the slightly cheerful moments pass to feel like melancholy). I do not say that what I exemplifically has happened to me, but I have heard/read many anecdotes.
@@-18 I don't know about how intentional it was. If I recall, the music was composed by Tarn himself, but eh, given that it's him and the guy is a genius, might be possible as well. Nonetheless, I agree with you, it's a roller coaster of emotions. For me, the strongest feelings are that of anxiety and order, in a mostly feverish manner. Hearing this on loop when I was learning the game, 12 years ago, still trying to grasp the basics while at any momment an invasion or something bad could occur, engraved those feelings on me. But don't get me wrong, I love this music, and the other one too! I can hear this for hours and hours...
Opened this in a tab and forgot about it for a minute, the video starts, I start panicking expecting all my dwarves to starve to death on the surface, then I remember I'm not actually playing the game. Nice cover dude.
01:14 Here comes the best part of the theme! 02:02 And here. 02:50 And here too. I get the intense vision of my first fortress. Set in a terrifying/haunted (can't remember) biome where the blood of elves covered ground, it got smashed by an Ogress after a few months. It was awesome
Very beautifully done! It is terrifying indeed, haha! I really enjoyed your playing. I always loved having this piece playing in the background of the game, a classical guitar rather ominously but intimately plucking this on loop. Meanwhile your CPU would be throttled completely as it procedurally generated an entire world! Looking back, I note inspirations of Tolkien and Fantasy in general contributing to the emotion this music evokes. This makes since of course, since Dwarf Fortress and rogue-likes/RPGs draw from there so deeply. What a brilliant game, and the most faithful continued Development and following of any modern game I know of, in my opinion.Tarn and Zach Adams definitely carved their own lane from stone. Thanks for the video.
bigblargh Thank you! I was wondering if it worked out well or not, it's hard to judge my own playing. And I plan to play for as long as I can, which I hope is pretty long.
This song sounds so good on the piano, I could listen to it for hours while watching my dwarves go insane or get ripped apart by (insert monster name).
Oh sorry I didn't reply, didn't get a notification! I learned this by listening to it and playing it back, which took about 8 hours in total. Been playing DF since I believe version 0.42, so this seemed like a nice one to learn. I wanted to play the main menu song as well, but then I got a lot of set backs so I never got the chance
Alex Atkinson There are a few different programs you could use. The thing you see in this video with the green and blue notes falling down is from the program Synthesia, which will work, but it's not free. Some others allow you to see and edit them, but if you only want to practice then Synthesia works well. I'd suggest looking up more about it if there are other options. If that's too much trouble, then it's still hopefully doable with this video itself
Not of this particular cover, sorry. There is one for a different arrangement of the song which you could search for, but that might not be what you'd want.
Thanks to Anrond for transcribing this!

We can only aspire to craft something with such spikes of piano.
No matter what happens to me in life, I am comforted by the fact that I know how to play Dwarf Fortress. DF will always be there.
Play the game or the theme?
Unless you get amnesia

That is the essence of dwarf fortress.

It was for the best
Now all it needs is to run for ten hours while I flail about to try and save the fortress from inevitable failure.

Some dwarves like Polyphynx for his amazing music.
What I like about the DF theme is that it is something slightly "off" about it. Kind of otherworldly. Fits the game.

amazing
The opening chord should have an 'a' (the minor sixth from the root) instead of a 'c#' (the octave from the root), I believe.
Love it, man.
Great stuff!
Reminds me of Phillip Glass if I'm being honest.
I just listened to some of his work, and I can see where you're coming from

amazing!

Where did you learn this at, music sheets, self taught, heard the soundtrack a lot, or something else?
Speaking of which, I noticed the main menu theme actually is it's own theme, while in game it's standard
