Totally agree it shouldn't be what the guitar looks like. It's down to the player. Ola Englund did a video playing metal on a Tele, strat and a 335. It's whatever floats your boat.
Like the blindfold idea as well.

I have a beautiful daphne blue strat that I love playing jazz and blues on as much as I love chugging chords on. At the end of the day, she's my guitar and that's what matters :)
I do love the thought of a clean playing blues cat hopping on stage with a Randy Rhodes V though haha

They are “supposed to be played” any way you as the player like...these ideas about having to have a specific guitar for every song every song ever written is one of the most successful marketing plans ever created. All the tones in the video can be had on with many guitars. A lot of them. Really enjoyed the video though because I love hearing good players! Good job

Pete and Ariel are two of the very few people that can get the balance of the picked notes vs the percussive strike just right when playing that kind of finger style. Most people are too heavy handed with the strike and it gets REALLY irritating very quickly. Well done guys, that's just so cool!... and great video. Not enough people talk about how the pointy guitars are great for blues as they play so well, the high output pickups give a great big round clean tone and they're really cheap!!!... in comparison to ridiculously cool custom shop relic Fenders :)

EVH, Allan Holdsworth played Charvel. Jeff Beck a Pink Jackson Soloist. They’re great guitars but they defined an era back in the 80’s. I own a Charvel San Dimas 1 QM and it’s a very versatile guitar. The pickups and radius neck are huge selling point. They sound great and they can get their quack in still.

  • @JamieWittGuitar
    @JamieWittGuitar 6 лет назад +12

I would hazard the reason is the simple one. They look quirky and cool when in Mayer's hands precisely because it juxtaposes his normal style. Almost as if he's saying he's at the point in his playing and career where he can do and play whatever he wants. It's hard but to see his choice to play that pink Soloist as anything other than a fashion choice.

Hang on, hang on a mo. I've got a bit of a problem here. There's a lot of talk on various channels amongst us guitar nerds about JM & EC & DG and it's entirely justified. May I draw the communal attention to the gentleman on the left of your picture. Pete's an absolutely top flight ace pro player, one of the best. For me, Ariel's got that incredibly rare thing where the skin the string & the wood become the same thing.

I have the Charvel in white and love it. It is such a versatile beast. You can split the coils by the way, to get closer to the strat tones. It stays in tune all the time. Only downside to me is that you cant change tunings as fast. Still looking for a nice strat tho ;)

I bought a san dimas maybe six months ago, I have played the thing clean/low gain more than I ever thought I would. Guess the pickups (which aren't actually that high output), particularly when split, with the alder body actually works really well. Ironically it is the squealies I really struggle to pull out compared to my other two electrics!

Pete, sorry I got side tracked with all the Meyer posts lol. I have a 1986 made in Japan Charvel. I was a total Jake E Lee fan and the neck on that guitar is what I judge all others by to this day. Just perfect for me. When I became more serious about tone and packed my Distortion pedal away. I didn't go out and buy a new guitar i didn't want to get used to something different all over again. I Changed the pickups (which were EMG) to Di Marzio single coils and the Floyd to a vintage strat bridge. It's a Japanese made Charvel with the slanted headstock. So yes, you can change the pickups and play all the blues you wanna. You may as well upgrade the CAPs and POTs and add a treble bleed while your at it. Call it the Danish Pete mod!! (I use Emerson)

I think I remember BUDDY GUY playing an LTD for a short time in the 90's or late 80's. But if you go to the south here in the USA where I was born and have tried to visit every joint where live music can still be found and the drinks are sold by the bottle and you can still smell the river in the walls from the last flood. You will find that people play whatever they get their hands on. It's a Blues guitar because that's whats coming out of it not the name on the head stock. And by the way, Jack Pearson plays a $69 Squire. I always remind myself of that fact before I reach for the wallet.

honestly, i absolutely love jackson (15 year old me even named my youtube account after them), but somehow a fender strat just makes you play stratty stuff. it just leads you into this direction, and while of course you can play blues just fine on a jackson, and it will sound great, the strat just makes it flow out of you, just like the shred flows out of you when playing a jackson. it's not about tone, it's not about "can you play X on Y guitar", it's about "does the guitar make you want to play X?". if you need one guitar to rule them all, there are plenty of options, but having multiple niche guitars is way more fun in my opinion

you would have to think that if you play pretty much any guitar through a bluesy set up i.e. amp/pedals its gonna sound somewhat bluesy, vice versa for a bluesy guitar played through a metal setup its gonna sound like a metal guitar.
plus how you play it and your own natural tone

I like John Mayer’s music precisely because it also attracts girls. Go to a Vai, Satch, Dream Theater concert and they are all predominantly guys (who are students of guitar).
It’s not much good socializing material. You always hanging out with the same nerdy guitar guys. Switch your taste in music and see what it does to your dating life. Just saying. I have no hate for John Mayer and his music, because he did some good things for my life.

I have played a ton of different styles of music on my Dean ML the guitar at the end of the day is just a chunk of wood with strings the shape is more about style than any practical requirements.

Great idea, now do this with amps. Play some jazz and blues on a 5150 or Invective and play some metal on a Twin (with a pedal probably lol).

Those warm neck humbucker cleans at 19:45 are _very_ compatible with Pete's playing, maybe don't be too quick with changing the pickups on your Jackson without thoroughly exploring what it has to offer for you.

Well...obviously....only some people need this kind of videos..or their guitar idol to convince them that it all doesnt matter at all...the way it sounds to you is all u need to know..u can make many other examples other way round...metal players playing strats or teles or hollowbody guitars..

The Jackson with the 51 style pickguard was pretty much Jeff Beck's signature in the 80's. Internet is awesome, you can learn a lot with 30 minute researchs about the charvel/jackson thing.

I didn't finish the video but in the intro you guys never use the whammy in all the ways John does and he even has an Instagram video explaining why he uses guitars with Floyd's on them. It's strictly to do a few tricks with the Floyd and he breaks them all down

These are nice guitars, but I think most blues players would want to go with a more traditional guitar - a Strat style with single coils, or a semi-hollow with P90's or humbuckers for that 335-type sound. If you mainly do heavy rock but want to dabble in blues, that's fine, but if blues is your thing, make it easy to get the sound and feel you want with a traditional electric blues guitar.
