  • Rio de Janeiro, Brazil | Carnival 2023. Welcome to the vibrant world of Rio Carnaval parade, where samba schools from across the city compete for victory in a dazzling display of creativity.
We were lucky to have our friend Johana - a samba teacher and musa - take us behind the scenes this year as her samba school, Porto da Pedra, vies for the winning spot of the night. Victory in the Carnival parade comes with fame, glory, and money, so competition is fierce between the samba schools. Preparation for the parade takes an entire year and is a culmination of community effort and creativity.
Join us in Rio de Janeiro's legendary Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí as we witness one of the world’s greatest spectacle - Brazil's biggest Carnaval parade and arguably the biggest party in the world. You'll learn about the rich culture and traditions behind Rio Carnaval, the hard work that samba schools put into creating a winning performance (creating an original theme for the parade procession, writing an original song, or samba-enredo, each year, and designing colorful, elaborate costumes that align with the overall story), and how they are judged during the parade.
Everything about Rio Carnival is visually stunning, full of tradition, culture, and history, and 100% maximalist in every way.
Spoiler alert: Johana's samba school Porto da Pedra ends up winning the night.

@@benedictcumberbatch4275 shouldn’t be walking around with your gold chain and waiving your new iPhone, but it’s not as bad as you might have heard. And other South American countries are a lot worse!

Schools have special wings for people with special needs, you see plenty of wheelchairs in all of them. Older member of schools are specially revered and respected, and many do attend the parades in wheelchairs. The sambodromo has a special place for PCD (pessoa com deficiencia). I attended the 2022 carnaval there.

Actually, Brazil is a very inclusive country. In my more than eight years at Sambadromo, I've seen countless of people parade on wheelchairs.
