Linda Rondstat should be in her list for the power and the range of her voice. She also covered do many genres of music. She compliments all those who sing with her.

Very great choices, Alex. All of those ladies are outstanding singers, far above average. I'm pleased that you chose Eva Cassidy. Such a great, underrated artist.
My favourite female singer is Sandy Denny. She is from the British folk-rock scene of the 70's, and was the lead vocalist for Fairport Convention, as well as one album for the Strawbs, and then she had her solo career, and her own band, Fotheringay. I don't think anyone sings that style of music better than her. Sadly, she is long gone now.

no other female singer can shine Aretha Franklin's doorknobs. Watch her sing "Amazing Grace" on video in a church wearing a white outfit with a choir present. Whenever i need to release some tears I watch it. She clearly amazed herself and sang so hard she sweat. That video is here on RUclips.

I guess it is hard to nominate the five best female singers of all time as each genre might appeal to a different audience and therefore different choices as to who should rank among the very top. Anyway, this is my all time great based on my own collection: Sandy Denny (folk). Her renditions of her own Fotheringay or others like Crazy Man Michael or the Banks of the Nile still reign supreme to me. Janis Joplin (blues). I still can't get over her performance of Ball and Chain at Monterey when I first saw her on video. Unbelievable stuff! Linda Ronstadt (pop rock) This big-eyed girl who always sand her heart out! Margo Timmins (of Cowboy Junkies). I first saw the band on the show called Sessions at West 54th. I was late turning on my tv and there she was doing some silky stuff. Thankfully their cover of Lou Reed's Sweet Jane enabled me to track the band and her down. See, I am not a country music fan but her delivery surely appealed to me at that time and I have been a convert since then. Bubbling under: Melody Gardot, Laura Marling, Melanie, Jewel, Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield. I surely admire your getting into more contemporary music as I have not bought anything that new in recent years!

I agree with ALL of your selections! Too bad you excluded opera singers which would have to be Maria Callas! WOW what a voice and range! I do love Eva Cassidy and especially Karen Carpenter! Both had a relaxed presentation and amazing range and feeling! Rare to have such emotionality at such a young age, far beyond her years! I also agree with Barbara Streisand although her politics has overshadowed her talent for the last 20 years! Didnt know that about Neil Diamond and her in school together! Thats very cool! Love your videos since I learn so much! Also one that I would put in this category with her emotional delivery on basically everything she has ever done! I'm talking about the incredible Roberta Flack! Everything she touches is gold and everyone in the biz falls over themselves to work with her!

Technically, Streisand is probably the best popular singer. People have described Laura Nyro concerts as a spiritual experience. Bette Midler described one Nyro concert at Carnegie Hall as Goddess level. Babs' flagging career was re-ignited by her Stoney End (1971) album which includes 3 Nyro songs, including the title track which was a No.6 hit for Babs.

Ella over Karen? A hard pass, stopped the video and thumbs down. Sure 'At Last' is terrific, but she's more like 3rd of all time. I've been an audiophile for decades and never heard of #5 (but you explained). I knew of Ella and her giant hit 'At Last' in passing way before millennials discovered it during the Presidential inauguration in 2009. And another thing, how about Patsy Cline?

I am soooooo tired with any "Best of" lists: it is a marketing device, a ploy. It is an American obsession with ranking everything and winds up sucking the joy out of music discovery. Wish people would improve their knowledge and critical listening abilities instead of being led by the nose in service of the "music business".

    • @peteh7966

The thing is with "best of" lists, is that everyone's taste is different and you may discover a singer that you would otherwise not have had exposure to. It's been true for me in the case of some of the more obscure prog bands (it's costing me lots of money playing catch up).

Maggie Bell was a good singer. Sang for little-known Scots band Stone the Crows in early 70's. She's the lady singing on Rod Stewart's song "Every Picture Tells A Story".
Her career never really panned out. A few reasons perhaps. 1. As with Sandy Denny, she lacked star looks. 2. Didn't sing with much restraint. (Some call it lack of class). 3. Wasn't American. 4. For me, she just didn't have the right manager/producer who could get her the right songs and vocal guidance. (Same goes for Frankie Miller, also a Scots).
Anyway, you can hear her talent on the Stone the Crows song "Sad Mary". The band were not good songwriters. The song is mostly an annoying, noodly, space-rock fest. And Maggie acts up with her shouting ways for much of it.
But at one point they slow it down to a steady groove and let Maggie remain in her sweet spot. The moment is worth a listen, to hear good blues-rock female vocals. She could've been a contender.

I respect your taste, but you need to be more objective in your picks. If you are going to pick a list of top-5 singers of all time, you just simply can't include a singer who issued a total of two whole albums, and of cover versions at that. There are artists of great talent whose careers spanned decades. Even Eva would agree that it is absurd that you put her on a top-5 list of anything. Stop it.
