the main jet and needle do not impact the bike at idle. only the idle jet and mixture screw. Turning the mixture screw out allows more gas to pass through during idle. Turn the screw in.
For all the world it sounds as if the choke slide has not fully retracted, but it may be a high float level, as in short float needle. Also a friend assumed that the choke worked the wrong way round, ie. slack cable = choke off, like a car! he took a lot of convincing that it was the other way round... If you ever found out what it was, try and let us know.
Thanks Howard, yes it was all choked up. It's been a while but I'm pretty sure that's what it was. I adjusted the air screw and the choke and it ran very well after that. I'm sorry to say that I haven't ridden it in some time. I promised myself I would ride it this year and it hasn't happened. Maybe before the end of the year or early next year! Cheers, Mike
Very good! As bikes go , the 650cc Triumphs are very, very good from all sorts of points of view, and are pleasant, and practical to use even by today's standards. I have ridden many thousands of miles on them from about 1959 onward, and still have a 750cc T140E (1979) I even worked at a main agent in those days. The ealier T110s with cast iron heads were very nice as well, and some of us thought them better "around town"... Best regards from the isle of Skye, Howard.
The magneto can do all these tricks worn slip ring, contamination in the mag Leading to weak spark, poor ht lead connections. I should know I replaced everything carb, head, Valves guides. Replaced the mag suddenly working perfectly. The point is it’s running lumpy adjusting carb made no difference. It would be hard to get going on the pick up but would then fly. All this on a brand new barrel and pistons I’d fitted. However they are the best run in set I’ve ever had.
I would try and obtain a selection of jets and don't get drastic. Just try going one size leaner. Try a new midrange jet and i would try to get a new pilot jet and needle. Lastly, check the needle in case someone emery clothed it trying to get more fuel. Just solves the issue of someone having altered the needle in lieu of having access to a selection of needles and jets.

I have a 1960 Tiger T110, and had the same problem, you will need to re-set your slide needle to position 4 which is one up from the lowest notch where you have it now will cause problems when throttle is open 50% or more, you need to fit a new idle jet and fibre washer the correct size is 25, my original idle jet was the correct size and there was nothing visible wrong with it, I was advised by a Amal specialist to replace it, which I did and bingo!! my machine no longer runs a rich mixture, hope this helps you with your problem. regards Peter

As an oldie Traffic cop. Wowee how I'd lohke ti take your bike for spin... Isuggest you slacken off the neuteral revs. The rear wheel should be stationary. As it is. It will cause some drag when on the open road/

The '56 was the best model, triumph dropped the compression ratio in the later models .... nice bike

Hi Peter, you should be able to get a reconditioned magneto from eBay or consider switching to a brand new BTH magneto. Hope this helps, cheers, Mike
these bikes do not like blend fuel, they hate it, try using straight petrol with a lead additive.

Have you cheched the valve/guide clearence.? maybe oil is getting into the combustion chamber..
