    I enjoyed the video, Mike. Man I really need a haircut. I don’t think I’ve had one yet this year. Since we made the video I adjusted the idle/slow speed air screw to lean it out a little because the plugs looked like it was running rich. I also replaced the NGK resister plugs with Champion copper core non-resister plugs. I also replaced the NGK resister plug caps with Champion non-resister caps. After several test rides it is running great. No sputters. Hopefully this chapter is closed.

    • @TornadoCAN99
      @TornadoCAN99 4 года назад +2

      Great video! So you thought there was some electro-magnetic interference from the high output alternator plus low draw LED headlamp? The ferrous block on the igntion trigger leads initially thought to help? Was that still with the resistor plugs/caps in place? Usually it is the high tension spark discharges that give high interference and can be a problem for high tech ignition setups (Trispark etc) and sometimes the reg/rec can be affected. It is usually recommended to run suppressor type resistor caps or plugs to stop the EMI at source.

    • @rscaryrsc
      @rscaryrsc 4 года назад +3

      TornadoCAN99 Yes, when I replaced the Boyer ignition with the TriSpark ignition I followed the recommendation to use resister plugs and caps. I removed the non-resister Champion plugs and caps and installed the NGK resister plugs and caps. I had not tried running it with the Champions immediately following the TriSpark installation. It’s been running great since I put the Champions back in. I left the filter on the power feed to the TriSpark. It may not help but can’t hurt. 🙂

      re: it may sound strange but don't forget the battery.

    • @rscaryrsc
      @rscaryrsc 4 года назад +1

      Richard I didn’t forget. I put a maintenance free sealed mesh type battery that’s working fine. The stator and voltage regulator easily keeps it charged up.

    • @TornadoCAN99
      @TornadoCAN99 3 года назад

      @@rscaryrsc Perhaps you had too much resistance (with plugs and caps, so about 10k Ohm per cylinder). This might be too much for your coils output to make a descent spark. Reducing total resistance by switching back to non-resistor plugs, still with resistance in caps (5k Ohm) might be better for your spark output and still suppressed enough for the Trispark and/or Reg/Rec setup.

      triumphmanful: Yes the ‘64 like Jay Leno’s is the same colors, gold and white with the exception of the pin stripes between the colors. The ‘64 Bonneville had black pinstripes. The ‘65 TR6 Trophy had light blue pinstripes. Other than that and the 2 carbs on the Bonneville they looked identical.

    Sounds like a real machine - the noise of the timing gears, push-rods and tappets all caught by the helmet visor; a very different riding experience against something else that sounds so mechanically tight, like a Commando, MotoGuzzi or 70-80s big Ducati where all you hear is the exhaust note. Another nice old motorcycle.

      First check is look in headlight for any uninsulated connections & use insulating tape over any suspects, then try disconnecting various parts of wiring and running to see if you can ind trouble area. Other classics fuse blow; shorting of connector on back of zenner diode (flying egg) because of vibration of mounting bracket, a 68 probably has that set up. Normal triumph mains fuse 12v 35 amp.

      So, the Darmah:
      One day I was at home in Melbourne Victoria doing my usual Saturday morning scan of the paper’s bikes for sale ads. A 1978 Ducati 900SD caught my eye. Minimal mileage and well kept. Within 15 minutes I was on my way to see it. A few suburbs away we stood looking at the black and gold beauty, just over a year old and one owner. I was offered a test ride and didn’t need asking twice. My wallet was bulging, having just returned from an overseas assignment. The ride was wonderful, that big Vee twin was seductive. On the way back, I slowed as I approached the man’s driveway. My wife was standing there beside our car with the man and I just called out, ‘pay him what he wants, I’m going home !’ That was that, I owned a Ducati.
      A week later I was headed on a summer ride to the yearly bike and music festival located on a beautiful property owned by The Hells Angels. The dirt track in to the farm was lined with Police vehicles, and we were all funnelled down a ‘Police processing line.’ First stop was offensive weapons, no problem there and I moved up to licences, followed by road worthiness and outstanding warrants, again no problem. Next stop was vehicle registration, here I was ‘noticed.’ The conversation went something like this.
      Plod: ‘Rego !’
      Me: I produced the document, which had not been transferred to my name yet.
      Plod: Is you name Mr. xxx ?
      Me: Er, no your officership.
      Plod: Then why are you riding his motorcycle?
      Me: Well actually, your inconvenience, it’s mine ! I just bought it a week ago.
      Plod: Where did you buy it then ?
      Me: Er, I can’t actually remember the exact suburb, but in Melbourne, your lowliness.
      Plod: We’ll how much did you pay for it, smartarse ?
      Me: Actually, I’m not sure !
      Plod: How can that be ? You don’t know were you bought it and you don’t know how much you paid for it. Well who did you buy it from then ?
      Me: It was a really nice young man with dark hair, I think. He was a student.
      Plod: Why don’t you know ?
      Me: Well actually, you won’t believe this, but the bike was bought for me as a present by a nice lady.
      Plod: Yeh right ! Well piss off and don’t get in any more trouble. A helpful boot up the rectum was just what I needed to get back on my bike.
      I didn’t get in any more trouble, and for clarity I’m not a Hells Angel, in fact I’m a professional man, like all the friends I came with. It turned out to be a great concert, with Canned Heat playing, and a lot of local bands. On Saturday night, there was a raffle. The prize was a 1,000 cans of beer and a woman. The man who won it had most of the cans taken from him, a slab or two at a time, by the ‘ugly boys.’ (A slab is 12 cans for those who don’t speak Australian). Who’s going to argue when they come around your tent in their ‘colours’ saying, ‘you won’t need all those cans will you ?’ They boys can be quite persuasive !
      Now it’s forty odd tears later and I’m approaching my fourth nut and bolt rebuild. The old girl has been a joy to own and we’ve covered some lovely ground together. It’s been very reliable although once on a freeway it did pull the starter motor on line at 4,200 rpm in top gear. That was interesting!

      Absolutely Ian. Sitting unused for months or years does them no good at all. The original 65 TR6 I had rarely had a chance to cool off the 5 years I owned it. This one leaked from several places when I first got it. It’s getting better as I ride it and retighten the cover screws when it cools. I doubt it will ever stop completely at this point.

    • @rscaryrsc

      These bikes didn’t come with mirrors or turn signals or even a switch for the front brake to light the brake light. So I guess none of these add ons are authentic. But I’d say good mirrors are essential for safe riding. Using hand signals for turns and making a habit of always using front and rear brakes together takes care of the other two.

    Beautiful bike, got a 68 but not in quite as good shape as that. Electric over voltage don't think so but if running LEDs like me could try turning 6 thou off of rotor that reduces alternator's power output (and uses a little less engine power which is why i did it). Could be fuel starvation I drill out bottom carb bolt ( the hollow bolt with side hole) that fuel line comes in on , either larger hole or two holes, its one carb feeding two cylinders and that keeps the float fully topped up when accelerating. Best wishes

      @Leeds Man: Thanks for the info. I had checked the voltage from the regulator and it was right on. The voltage regulator that was on the bike when I first got it didn't have cooling fins, got hot and apparently burned out. This one doesn't get hot at all. I don't think it is electrical "noise" anymore either but I'm leaving the filter on for now. I did find that it was running rich at slow speed though so It opened up the slow speed air adjustment to lean it out a little. I recall that even on cold days it would start first kick with no choke applied. I should have taken that as a clue it was too rich on the slow speed circuit. Since I leaned it out I now have to use the choke for a cold start. That's more like what I expect. So it may not be perfect yet but I think I'm at least getting close. It's certainly running great as it is now.

    Thanks , one of the nicer Turner twins imho. Perhaps a bit of overthink? Lots of mods and sounds great at idle, but fluffed a bit as he said
    coming out of the turn into the cul de sac. Throttle slide cutaway maybe but barely off the pilot. One thing occurred to me was fuel and plugs. I don’t know
    What ethanol content is common in the U S but sitting around even for short periods can attract alot of water this side of the pond, also spark plugs
    Now the quality is poorer and counterfeits are commonplace. Interesting about the loads on the electrical system, most brit bikes before the all
    pervasive safety culture of modern times ran without lights on at all in daylight wether they were incandescent or not , surely the old fashioned zener diode
    Disposed of the excess energy and protected the battery, which I assume this bike was equipped with oe ? Sorry not trying to be nit picky just thinking aloud
    so to speak.

    • @rscaryrsc
      @rscaryrsc 4 года назад

      All good information, John. This bike only gets non-ethanol premium. It doesn’t get ridden often. What I’ve done since this video includes: opened slow speed “air” screw half turn; replaced NGK resister plugs and caps with Champion N5C non-resister plugs and caps; set plug gap at .030. I did several short rides between rain last couple weeks. Went on a 30 mile ride today that included slow speed putting around, hills and 70mph cruising. The bike ran great. No sputters at all. Now it also need the choke when cold so I think I had the mixture too rich before. I’m very pleased with the way it is now running.
      Thanks for your input.

      I agree with you Thakery. This bike was restored to be a concourse bike 20 years ago. Thankfully the owner decided to sell it. But it only had 25 miles on it so it had not been debugged following it’s restoration. I’ve had it 4 years now and after years of fixes and following a test ride today after a long list of fixes, I think you could ride this bike anywhere. A vintage bike will always need more attention than a modern bike so just have your tools with you. I love riding this bike.

In my home state Victoria Australia you are allowed to split lanes in some circumstances so I want to be as narrow as possible to slip thru.
