Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, a small town in Vyatka Governorate -(present-day Udmurtia)- in the Russian Empire, into a family with a long line of military service. His father, Ilya Petrovich Tchaikovsky, had served as a lieutenant colonel & engineer in the Department of Mines, & would manage the Kamsko-Votkinsk Ironworks. His grandfather, Petro Fedorovych Chaika, served 1st as a physician's assistant in the army & later as city governor of Glazov in Viatka. His great-grandfather, a Ukrainian Cossack named Fyodor Chaika -(accordingly, 'Tchaikovsky' is the derivative of the Ukrainian family name 'Chaika')- , distinguished himself under Peter the Great at the Battle of Poltava in 1709. Tchaikovsky's mother, Alexandra Andreyevna née d'Assier, was the 2nd of Ilya's 3 wives, 18 years her husband's junior & French on her father's side.[5] Both Ilya & Alexandra were trained in the arts, including music - a necessity as a posting to a remote area of Russia also meant a need for entertainment, whether in private or at social gatherings. Of Tchaikovsky's 6 siblings, he was close to his sister Alexandra & twin brothers Anatoly & Modest. Alexandra's marriage to Lev Davydov would produce & children & lend Tchaikovsky the only real family life he would know as an adult, especially during his years of wandering. One of those children, Vladimir Davydov, whom the composer would nickname 'Bob', would become very close to him. In 1844 the family hired Fanny Dürbach, a 22-year-old French governess. 4½ year old Tchaikovsky was initially thought too young to study alongside his older brother Nikolai & a niece of the family. His insistence convinced Dürbach otherwise.[11] By the age of six, he had become fluent in French & German. Tchaikovsky also became attached to the young woman; her affection for him was reportedly a counter to his mother's coldness & emotional distance from him, though others assert that the mother doted on her son. Dürbach saved much of Tchaikovsky's work from this period, which includes his earliest known compositions, & became a source of several childhood anecdotes. Tchaikovsky began piano lessons at age 5. Precocious, within 3 years he had become as adept at reading sheet music as his teacher. [source: Wiki]
Same for Rachmaninoff, Holst, (sometimes) Wagner and (especially in John Williams' case) Stravinsky. Basically all composers who've created colourful orchestrations with a modern orchestra have influenced film composers.
Tchaicovsky had innate understanding of how minor chord structures with a major overtone could create wide open spaces of immense emotion. Is there not a more powerful note that a minor note? Tchaicovsky if my heart could translate what my soul feels, it would play your great compositions.

1929GY If it's a "piece of music," doesn't it then make it music, too? Yes, but... The first statement by Ryan Reed said, "Forty-five people are unable to appreciate music." I love Tchaikovsky, particularly this excerpt and this is one of the best performances I've heard; I really like how the underlying strings and harp are brought out creating a wonderful setting/atmosphere to accompany the solo oboe in the opening. However, I don't know if Ryan Reed meant this, but just because 45 people do not appreciate this piece of music, it doesn't mean they do not appreciate all music, music itself. Those same people could say the same thing about a piece of heavy metal music, punk rock, goth, grunge, or something that others would not appreciate. Musical tastes differ. I don't know why I said all this, I guess the phrases, "piece of music" and "music" just compelled me being the kind of person I am, someone who likes to be precise in choosing the words I use to convey the right meaning. Hopefully I did this without sounding like a pretentious, pompous little prick, it was not my intention. For some reason I feel like I've failed however. Anyway... Happy listening and enjoy the music, whatever it is that you listen to.
i can´t help saying this, but for me, this extraordinary and brilliant Russian virtuoso is the best classic music composer of all time. He deserves the universal achievement of excellence in waltzes and ballets and for making the biggest fantasies come true. Greetings from his biggest fan in Honduras, Central America.
Same. I didn't appreciate classical music when I was younger but now that I'm learning to play piano.. boy is it good. Like this is magical and touches your heart.
I heard this on a movie on TV and was bursting to know who composed this. Clicked into this by chance, and got a lovely surprise. Beautiful piece of music!

Yeah, I agree. I believe I hear a little bit of the imperial death march in this piece.
John Williams would disagree
Tchaikovsky was a composer and writer, sure, but at heart he was a storyteller. Even if it wasn't his stories, he made the stories breath.
