I just started pre-cooking beans (aka "Pulses" in mycrockpot (including white, black, and garbanzos), freezing the cooked beans in 2-cup servings and just throwing them into things like soup, casseroles, and stir fry dishes. Pulses are supposed to be very healthy for the body, but I am not particularly fond of them in dishes where they are the main feature. After listening to one of your earlier videos, I am also adding Mackerel back into the weekly menu. Mackerel is not sold at my Aldi, but I can buy it at another nearby store - because I really do need to pay attention to getting the fatty fish in our diet at least twice a week. I love your no waste approach and I believe that is the right approach to everything in life. Thanks a lot for this video and all the information you share so generously. And since you love questions, I would like to know how you deduce that prices are expensive or not. Or do you compare them to the prices you used to pay when you arrived in France? Thanks again.
The pasties and sausage rolls look amazing What a great food haul the vegetables look so fresh and the size... wow. I really enjoyed the video today, but I enjoy it every time 😃 Wishing you a great weekend from the USA ❤️
I agree the cabbage and cauliflower are a great size for the price. Here in the UK the veg seems to be quiet small this winter. I bought a Savoy cabbage in my last food shop it was less than half the size of yours and cost 86pence (1.03€) cauliflower is always more expensive than cabbage and usually smaller. To get my moneys worth I put all the outer leaves from both cabbage and cauliflower into my soups.
I really enjoyed watching this Jane, those sausage rolls and pasties looked amazing! 😎 I haven't seen pasties that big since I was in holiday in Cornwall a few years ago and one was enough for two meals for me 😋
Thank you for such a great video. Can I just check, in the pastry brief you say 2 tablespoons of salt per 1kg flour, but in the section when you made the pastry you said 1/4 teaspoon of salt for 400g flour.

I really enjoy all your videos but I especially love the food Fridays! I'm always amazed at the food prices in Brittany - they are really quite good compared to Canada I would say that we pay 2 to 3x the price for the same. Those Winter vegetables were so huge and fresh! You do such a fantastic job of finding great offers and making delicious meals 🥰

Some super bargains on the meat well done. In week 3 I have done no shopping so far I have done one supermarket shop and I have spent £42.50 in January . Hopefully I won’t need to shop for the rest of the month.
Great grocery haul! I did mine this past week and spent $67.19 cdn but I am expecting that to last until close to the end of February. Milk and bread will be the exception of course. We had a lot of empty shelves. Little meat, fresh produce almost non existent. Thank goodness for the local farm shops. Could you include your recipes? That would be wonderful. Enjoy your weekend!

Wow! Those pasties looked so tasty! I've just made a sweet potato & chicken peas curry in my instant pot so another meal for the freezer. I'm slowly working thru it and I'm still on track for my no spend January. Thanks for all the inspiration. X
Hi Jane & Mike! Always love seeing your shopping haul, how I'd delight in trying the Toulouse sausages. I did a shop on Friday at Aldi and spent £40: 47 for just the two of us, not a large spend as still have a few things in the freezer leftover from Christmas. Like you I'm planning a batch of pastry next week some for the freezer and due to your Inspiration some will go into pasty making. I also plan a large batch of carrot and lentil soup. Keep up the good work with the pantry challenge as it's always so Interesting. Love to you both xx
Thank you for another informative video and especially the pastry tutorial! I am closely tracking my food spending this month and have just about enough money to last for the remaining 10 days of January. Luckily I have some leftover Christmas meat in the freezer - bacon, sausagemeat, small sausages, cooked turkey and frozen leeks (bought in Lidl on offer, chopped and frozen). I can see the sausage rolls and some kind of pasties making an appearance, now I know how pastry can be made quickly - alth I only have a mini processor, I'm sure it can be done. I have also made the school canteen cake twice this month, to fill the teen - and husband! - with hollow legs. Homemade cake, especially with coloured sprinkles, always brightens everyone up! Thank you again x
Your pasties and sausage rolls look wonderful! I have been having some kitchen time too today to use things up, very satisfying. Have a lovely weekend!

One of things about food prices in France (compared to Italy) that I remember Is a communication written in the bar of the last truck stop on the border, between Italy and France (Frejus),mentioning the price of One coffee/pack of red Marlboro once you 'd crossed the boarders😁. It was nearly 20 years ago..Anyways, the inflation have increased here too.. Hi both, your sausage rolls and pasties look so appetising. 😋 I don't enjoy food shopping now with ever increasing costs and shortages. Laundry and dishwasher products are a ridiculous price here in UK. I only buy what we need but shopping seems a constant battle. Looking forward to your next vlog.

It sounds like your prices are much lower than in Canada (with the exchange applied) and I live in one of the cheaper provinces. With the exception of meat though, which seems about the same. That TP would cost about double here, but they gave up on the recycled stuff years ago, I don't know why. What seems strange is that your beef is cheaper, since Canada's a big beef producer.
I’ve just watched Rick Stein making pasties and yours look just as good if not better.I think I might have a go too as my family love them. Do you bring your pastry back up to room temperature after it’s been in the fridge?

Fabulous cooking Jane made my mouth water. Prices are a concern but I was impressed with your cauliflower I have just paid 79p for one that's half the size of yours the quality of the fresh produce looks fantastic . Another enjoyable video. Thank you.
Hope you enjoy. We find the cheapest veggies, buy loads and eat them with every meal
I agree the winter vegetable in France always look much fresher than the ones we see in the supermarket her in the UK
Hello Jane x
Hi Shelia, thanks for watching
Wow! Those pasties looked so tasty! I've just made a sweet potato & chicken peas curry in my instant pot so another meal for the freezer. I'm slowly working thru it and I'm still on track for my no spend January. Thanks for all the inspiration. X
That curry sounds nice.
@@FrugalQueeninFrance oops, it was meant to be chickpeas lol. 🤦♀️

Look it done it to me too

Hi Jane & Mike! Always love seeing your shopping haul, how I'd delight in trying the Toulouse sausages. I did a shop on Friday at Aldi and spent £40: 47 for just the two of us, not a large spend as still have a few things in the freezer leftover from Christmas. Like you I'm planning a batch of pastry next week some for the freezer and due to your Inspiration some will go into pasty making. I also plan a large batch of carrot and lentil soup. Keep up the good work with the pantry challenge as it's always so Interesting. Love to you both xx
Thanks Jan. We all do our best with increasing prices.
The pasties and sausage rolls looked superb. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for watching
You can make small batches? 200g of flour, 100g of fat, pinch of salt, add a bit of water at a time. Keep making the batches until you have enough
@@FrugalQueeninFrance Thank you, that should work. Will keep me occupied while my son is doing his mountain of homework.
@@corinneleppard1933 it’s a pain to make even with a food processor, that’s why I make a batch then freeze it
Your pasties and sausage rolls look wonderful! I have been having some kitchen time too today to use things up, very satisfying. Have a lovely weekend!
Enjoy the kitchen time
Those pasties look delicious as usual!
Haha, spotted the “ham box” in the fridge, a classic to store opened packs of ham!
Jane and Mike you have rekindled my love of baking and I am determined to get back to it very soon, thank you for inspiration. Jane for gluten free pastry what is the best "flour" to use? Thank you. Your home and garden are such a haven well done.
You’ll find there’s a different brand in each country
@@FrugalQueeninFrance in the UK going there this week I should have said.
@@adaly5115 ok sainsburys have their own, as does Asda, both good. Dove Farm costs more but is good. I struggled to get any when I was there in October. Here in France, the brand I buy is Schar
@@FrugalQueeninFrance Jane thank you I can see if there is any and hopefully pick up 1 or 2 bags and start baking 😀.
This is fabulous! Very inspiring!
great help having a written menu for the teenagers. Whats for dinner? look on the board!! Alot less stress and even 2nd day left overs.
I used to have a piece of paper with a fridge magnet before
Thank you Jane! It is really helpful!
I'm so glad!

Thanks Sabine, how kind
Just wanted to say hello from California!
Hello to you too
Really enjoyed the video. The pastries and sausage rolls looked 😋 thank you for sharing.
You’re welcome and I hope that you enjoy today’s video too
One of things about food prices in France (compared to Italy) that I remember Is a communication written in the bar of the last truck stop on the border, between Italy and France (Frejus),mentioning the price of One coffee/pack of red Marlboro once you 'd crossed the boarders😁. It was nearly 20 years ago..Anyways, the inflation have increased here too.. Right now I m baking bread and cooking tomato sauce which are going half in the freezer, and I'm also making more soy yougurt by adding soy milk to the yogurt left the jar.
Thanks for sharing
Hi both, your sausage rolls and pasties look so appetising. 😋 I don't enjoy food shopping now with ever increasing costs and shortages. Laundry and dishwasher products are a ridiculous price here in UK. I only buy what we need but shopping seems a constant battle. Looking forward to your next vlog.
Hi Ann, do you think thr shortages are regional, some viewers are saying there are no shortages? We are seeing a few shortages here but there are alternatives, for example my lidl doesn't stock their own brand cien bath soap at the moment
@@FrugalQueeninFrance Hi Jane, hard to tell as I'm speak from living in Gloucestershire. It varies from week to week but I'm sure there are some supply chain problems. Our local Lidl very short on dishwasher products; haven't been able to buy dishwasher salt for ages. Nice to chat to you.
mmmmmm yummy cheesy, sausage rolls!!!!! love from Kernow xx
Cheers Margaret
👍👍👍
Hi Jane and Michael. Thank you for the inspiring videos. That's a good food haul. Our food here in South Africa is more expensive then in Europe. I grow a bit of veggies to stretch my budget and cook with less meat and more beans. I like that you have said that we have to get creative with what we have, that is what I do as well.
the pasties look delicious and I will give them a try.
Yep, we have to get creative
Thank you for sharing tips of life challenges we face I look forward to watching your videos
Glad you like them!
Your pasties and sausage rolls look so delicious! Getting ideas thank you great video enjoyed it very much!

Great food haul very practical & frugal meal planning.
Brilliant idea to batch make pastry. Those pasties look delicious.
Thanks Rachel
Oh my goodness those pasties and sausage rolls looked delicious!
Thanks very much for watching
Yet again an amazing video Jane and Michael. Your truly an inspiration! I did my top up shopping today mostly fresh stuff and stuck to my list. So not only cost me less but saves not buying impulsively. Looking forward to seeing your next video.
Thanks Emma
Hello Jane, I love and do batch cooking as well. And I could not live without my freezer....Love your videos. Thank you for sharing your tips. Regards to you and your husband from the Netherlands.
Thanks Monique
I am curious about what a typical breakfast or lunch might look like in France? You have inspired me to focus on what we have in our freezer and food cupboards and use it up in creative ways. Thank you! Also, what is under your sewing machine needle and long arm these days? :-)
Breakfast for us is porridge or toast, lunch is leftovers.
@@FrugalQueeninFrance That is pretty much the same for us....sometimes an egg and toast added in. This morning it was steel cut oats with cinnamon and a few strawberries from the freezer that I was able to get free last fall. It tasted quite special for the weekend.
Do you clean out and re-use your zip loc bags? Thanks for showing how to make pasties and sausage rolls. The pasties look enormous & delicious. You have amazing quality of vegetables.
Yes I do, thanks for watching
I use half butter and half lard in pastry - cheaper and I think lard is better texture.
Thank you for showing us how to make your pie crust.
You’re welcome, people asked so I gave them what they wanted
So nice to see you using enough fat. Many recipes don't. I always use plenty to get a proper pastry. Everything looks delicious. tfs 🥰❄☃☔🌞🏜✝💗
Yep, half fat to flour
Great haul for your groceries. Wonderful shopping
Thanks Mary
We have a food co-op called “Be wise farms” you can get amazing recipes vegetable recipes on their website. If you like chard there are about nine recipes. My favorite is the juicy Swiss chard. Amazing! ❤️
Hi Jane and Mike. Jane are you using your toaster oven much these days? We are still trying to decide to purchase or not. Our utility bill increased 30% on the gas side even though we used less therms! Our oven is gas along with the furnace and water heater. Thanks for the videos. Wonderful!
Yes we use it more than our main oven.
💖
It sounds like your prices are much lower than in Canada (with the exchange applied) and I live in one of the cheaper provinces. With the exception of meat though, which seems about the same. That TP would cost about double here, but they gave up on the recycled stuff years ago, I don't know why. What seems strange is that your beef is cheaper, since Canada's a big beef producer.
Thanks for watching and commenting
I’ve just watched Rick Stein making pasties and yours look just as good if not better.I think I might have a go too as my family love them.
Do you bring your pastry back up to room temperature after it’s been in the fridge?
Hi Sue, I don’t I roll it whilst it’s cold, it keeps the fat cold which makes it ‘short’ when I cook it
Thanks Jane.I enjoy watching your videos ,particularly your recipe/cooking and shopping tips.
