Breast cancer recurrence; signs, symptoms, and treatment with Dr Tasha

- The one thing patients who have had treatment for breast cancer fear the most is that the cancer may come back. This is also known as cancer recurrence. In this solo episode, I talk about all things related to recurrence, what to look out for, the possible signs and symptoms and the possible treatment options.
Treatment for breast cancer, not only removes the cancer, but it is also aimed to minimise the risk of cancer coming back. So, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, endocrine treatment are all recommended with this single aim in mind. Immunotherapy such Herceptin for Her2 positive cancers, as well as biphosphonates are also known to reduce cancer risk.
What is really exciting is the evidence pointing towards lifestyle changes that has positive impact on cancer recurrence. These activities include exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, good nutrition and reducing alcohol intake.
The three types of recurrences include:
Local recurrence
Regional recurrence
Distant recurrence
The 5 things to look out for / red flag symptoms would include:
1. Bone pain that can either be a dull ache or sharp pain that isn’t going away and with no history of trauma.
2. Liver symptoms could include a sensation of bloating, abdominal pain or discomfort especially in the upper right hand side, fatigue, swelling of the abdomen and loss of appetite.
3. Lung symptoms may be a non-productive cough, sharp pain when breathing, shortness of breath.
4. Brain symptoms may include dizziness, unsteady on feet, nausea, mood swings, fatigue, vomiting and visual disturbances.
5. Spinal cord compression is a rare red flag symptom but one that needs urgent attention. The symptoms include severe lower back pain that doesn’t go away, numbness or electrical shock sensation, pins and needles down the arm or leg. Weakness, difficulty using arms or legs and numbness in the area around the back passage , inability to empty the bowel or bladder and problems controlling the battle bladder. If you get any of these symptoms you need to get urgent medical attention.

how long will it take to spread to the cervix and uterus ???
Hi Dr Tasha, I have been diagnosed with regional reoccurrence, it’s all so confusing. My primary was her2 postive but now it has changed to triple negative. The tumor was in infraclavier, all removed but pet scan showed 2 noules near by. My team have said that I am a complicated case, I was wondering if I can get a second opinion and who would be best to approach. Thank you so much.
Hi Sara, sorry to hear about your diagnosis. You can perhaps ask your current doctors whether you can go elsewhere for a second opinion. They may be able to point you in the right direction?
Hi Dr. Tasha, what does it mean when the part where the breast was removed is itchy? It has been like 9 months since mastectomy, and already done with chemotherapy. Is it some dermatitis case? Tho there was no lump on the operated part, but sometimes you feel the numbness in the lower shoulder and upper breast but not continuously.. Is it because of tiredness maybe? Thank you

Hi Dr. Tasha my wife is suffering from breast pain with her right breast in the upper portion. Its start it when she notice some nipple discharge like a pimple size .We visit a doctor to check her breast but they give only a pain reliever. And for her breast Ultrasound and the result is normal no lump or any symptom for breast cancer. But shes still suffering some pain
Hello there. I am afraid I can't comment on individual cases. If she has been checked by a doctor and was given the all clear, then that is reassuring. Should her symptoms persists, then she should return to her doctor for advice.
I had pain for 2 years before they saw my lump. I was getting checked out every 6 months.

I have a big l lump in my left breast and am scared the pain started since the day I got my booster dose for covid19 and I have no money for teatment.
Stay away from COVID vaccines, I got a lump after my vaccine and ended up with stage 2 Breast cancer 2 months later. Go get checked! Asap

They have a committee in Canada at the hospital for cancer. They help patients who can’t afford treatment. Chemo is expensive. You might not need that kind of treatment
