This whole album, Kind of Blue, is fantastic and belongs in anyone’s music collection. It changed the direction of Jazz forever.
Kind of Blue this is a must own order the CD, Order several for gifts, you can;t go wrong with Miles and Trane.
Kind of Blue is the greatest Jazz record ever made
I totally agree
I'm not even a bass player and I can admit that the licks in these songs are great for improv in general
I listened to the whole album on a rainy night while taking a bus trip in high school for a field trip. I'd give anything to have that night back.
Yesss! Hope jazz becomes a regular part of your channel!
instablaster
I love hip hop! But really glad you are doing other kinds of music. You Rock MBD!
Christine hip hop was inspired by jazz, you know.
**and blues most of all
9:16 Their reaction in the background when Trane hits that riff, is classic! You know you're a legend when you can get a reaction, albeit a subtle one, from another legend like Miles Davis. You can see, it grabbed his attention!
What a great reaction pick! This quintet was truly groundbreaking! The camera shot at 6:14 is iconic. Davis blowin' with Coltrane looking on only to be followed by Coltrane truly announcing himself to the world!
It's really cool how you're reacting and paying attention to music from generations before. There aren't a lot of reactors focusing on old music as much, so props to you man. Keep up with these great videos! 😊
Gotta love how there are musicians casually taking cigarette breaks during the song.😂
It's the respectful thing to do. When someone else is soloing you get off the main stage
When they made this, they weren't thinking about being historic; no true artist does.
So true. Jimmy Cobb, the drummer in this recording and of course Kind of Blue, said that for them it was just another gig. For Ellington, as told by his son Mercer, it was always the next concert, the next recording session, why he kept the orchestra on the road mostly out of his own pocket. Everything beyond that he thought was out of his control.
coltrane in the cut, thats a scary sight, love this song. coltrane and cannonball killed it to me.
I need a glass of bourbon. I could listen to this for days
I was literally named Miles because my dad is a jazz lover, and I grew up playing saxophone. And yes, I can play Take Five.
That is so cool.
Did Dave Brubeck play miles or the other way around? Who originated that?
Miles Davis Quintet augmented by Orchestra.
Miles Davis - Trumpet
John Coltrane - Tenor Sax
Wynton Kelly - Piano
Paul Chambers - Bass
Jimmy Cobb - Drums
All legends in their own right. Cheers for doing Jazz. Metal fans seem to get Jazz easier than fans of other genres it seems. As a hardcore jazzer I thank you and please do more. I've got hundreds of mind blowing selections if you need em. Peace!
Don't forget Adderly on the alto sax.
I love how all the legends ran in the same circles and seemed to play with each other at one point or another... even mentoring and providing opportunities for the up and coming players.
@@NJbakintheday That's jazz!
My favorite jazz record of all time is Kind of Blue. This is the first track on the record. I definitely recommend Blue in Green from that album. The entire thing is incredible though.
blue in green is incredible
Just get the album Kind of Blue. Even metal heads have that one.
Big ups to Miles Davis
And all the Jazz legends for paving the way for Hip Hop
Miles & Coltrane- two of GOD’s greatest creations
Amen Brother
Right my favorite artists aswell
No other way to wrap your head around this level of talent.
@@2350cmart no one wants to talk about the thousands of hours of practice. Easier to imagine God
@@marciamakesmusic , fair enough, but try and spend the rest of your living days trying to match their talent. I’m not a religious person, and “God” may have been an easy way of describing natural talent…either way, all the practice in the World will not get you very far on the path to their level.
I love how Miles just casually falls back and has himself a smoke after he was done playing his solo. The epitome off cool.
This is the 27 Yankees. That's John Coltrane on Sax, Paul Chambers on Bass. Jimmy Cobb on Drums..greatest group ever formed.
Btw, Miles died in 1991, he was one of the coolest man on the planet. The Primce of Darkness. If you want more jazz, Dave Brubeck is a great starting point along with John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, the Blue Note classics from the 50s-60s....then work your way around to the experimental jazz of the 70s like Bitches Brew...
Miles used a low pressure technique. The sax is the great John Coltrane.
He also played in the middle register, which has less pressure on the lips, or embouchure.
John Coltrane is pure genius!
Lol, "He made the cool walk off didn't he" that's exactly what I was thinking.
RIP MR JIMMY COBB! the last remaining musician from this group ad drummer extraordinaire.
My son had a scholarship to go to school for Jazz. He played sax, his wife played the stand up bass. Unplanned pregnancy changed their plans.. I really developed an appreciation for Jazz during those years. Their guitarist went on to go to Julliard on scholarship. They got to play with Sinatra's trombonist.
So classy. So smooth. Great on you for doing blues and jazz lately. I hope you're hooked and do more. There's really a lack of reaction channels that cover these gems. Thank you!
There were feel good stories about jazz in NY, Chicago, New Orleans, California, St. Louis and Europe. Whites and Blacks enjoyed together.
I listened to hard rock and metal from the age of 11 to around 45. Then wanted to explore jazz. Remember searching for the best jazz album just to see what it was like. It appeared to be Kind of Blue by Miles Davis. I did not get into it for the first 3 years but somehow it grew on me. Now fast forward 9 years 90% of the records I buy are Jazz records. My favorite artists are Bill Evans, Bobby Hutcherson and Miles Davis. Think I have around 12 Miles records. I play You must believe in spring by Bill Evans the most and still exploring every day
Glad you've found Miles! His tunes definitely changed the world of music forever.
I love how you choose to react to some of my favorite genres that almost no one else does. I've seen many of your videos before but today, I saw you reacted to some jazz, and you sir have now earned yourself a new subscriber. Keep on with the funk, the jazz and whatever else you please.
MD's "'So What" is amazing. I can recommend more if you like, but check out John Coltrane's "In a Sentimental Mood." He was the saxophonist in this video. Namaste Brother
Oh! I guess this is your first reaction video to Jazz. Definitely do another one. You mentioned John Coltrane. My Favorite Things would be a good choice!
No matter what he listens to, as long as it is Mr. John Coltrane.
In certain moods this gives me goosebumps.
The album this is on, Kind of Blue, is imo the greatest album ever made. It's on my record player at least twice a month. When I first heard it I listened to it non stop for 6 months, it never came off my turntable. I hope it's the last album. I hope it's the last album I hear before I die. You haven't really lived till you've sat down with some good bourbon and gave it a listen.
Watch the Ken Burns series on Jazz and buy the music and even just watching the show you’ll expose yourself to jazz. Freddie Freeloader comes next…this is a great album.
You should hear the studio version with that beautiful intro
You got Miles and Trane here. It just doesn't get any better. What a magnificent performance!
Some forgot that Bill Evans wrote songs too.
Love these geniuses. As a jazz artist, this and these are JAZZ
Miles is God ❤️
He played in my country, Portugal 🇵🇹, 4 times thanks to the great Luiz Villas Boas in Cascais, Braga and Lisboa
At 12:56 Miles quotes "Surrey With the Fringe on Top".
“The cool walk off…” MBD, you don’t get any cooler than Miles, man! Great pick of a video to present your first Cool Jazz experience, dude!
John Coltrane on tenor these guys are legends.
The great John Coltrane on tenor sax,who would go on to become one of the most influential jazz musician in history.
So What feels like a walk under a rainy night.
Love your reaction. You comment the right things in the right way. I hope you will do more Jazz from time to time. Have seen Miles Davis three times in concert during the 80s, even the music was very different, more Jazzrock / Fusion / Pop, his tone was still the same. Seeing him on a stage was a true experience.
To paraphrase Lao Tzu, "The Jazz that can be explained is not the true Jazz", this is so Zen it is ridiculous. I love jazz but don't know a lot, I just appreciate the awesomeness..
Jazz is the supreme of all music 🎶
Thankyou so much for reacting to this! 💜💜💜
The GUY on the far side you can't really is simply one of the best musicians of the 20th century that goes by the name of John Coltrane.
Try Moanin by Art Blakey and there’s footage of them playing it in Belgium.
Watching this with my little cat. Pretty sure baby is asleep. Outstanding commentary. Miles and his crew were the real thing.
Damn, that's a big-ass studio they had there.
I’m a little late to the party here, but when Miles and crew went into the studio to record Kind of Blue, they didn’t have any sheet music. Just some rough sketches. And, with the exception of one song, you are listening to the first time the songs had ever been performed from beginning to end. It’s one thing to improvise when you know what everyone else is going to play. It’s another thing to do it all together as a group. If that doesn’t blow your mind, I don’t know what will.
Bro, these guys epitomized cool. This was, to me, the golden age of jazz. This song stays in my playlist.
This album changed my life! Miles Davis and John Coltrane on the side here on sax, 2 GOATs! Definitely check out more from both of these legends.
John Coltrane (saxophone) solo is Meshuggah in its Infancy.
This is my favorite Miles Davis song. John Coltrane is the sax player, who is also a legend in Jazz.
I recommend Grover Washington - Black Frost or Grover Washington Mr. Magic. I'm 23 but I remember my grandfather listening to this kind of music in the car along with Bill Withers, and George Duke.
Crash That’s awesome man. Have you listen to the George Duke and Billy Cobham album before? It rocks.
@@nairbas392 I haven't listened to Billy Cobham before.
Not a bad track on that entire LP (Kind of Blue)! The quintessential Miles Davis!
On the album the pianist was the great Bill Evan's, he was white. He wrote the album liner notes and some of the charts too. This album introduced the world to modal jazz, which influenced everyone, including rock musicians.
Found your video from a reddit meme of all places, and gotta say: I dig it. You done good. Hope you're well in these hard times. Salutations from Denmark
There is cool, then there is Miles cool. A whole different level.
BTW this alone was enough to make me subscribe to you. You do have a very lucid grip on music not seen in most reaction videos.
Everyone that listens to hip hop has to respect the past of the creative geniuses of black musicians like Coltrane and Davis.
Anyone that listens to any music has to respect Miles and Coltrane. They are mountains among mere ants.
Miles smoking a cigarette and hanging out while John Coltrane solos...wow.
Wow! Kudos to you for playing Miles David👏👏
Awesome man! Kind Of Blue is in my top 10 albums of all time. You should check out the entire album. Blue In Green is a masterpiece of a song.
Katryon Kelly All blues is one of my personal favourites.
Glad you're reacting to jazz! There are a lot more Miles Davis songs to listen to, but Charles Mingus is another excellent jazz artist
This live version is better then the studio version
The Birth of The Cool
That's John Coltrane on sax!!
Of course the saxophonist is the great John Coltrane. Miles had the Avengers of Jazz behind him, actually two sets! The great Bill Evans played on the studio recording btw, so Miles did actually have a white guy in his band in this era
And that was controversial among blacks until they heard Evans play!
Evans was an absolute genius. My Foolish Heart is a song that really resonates with me personally.
Kyrie Sampson:. I had to go all the way to the last comment to find that someone mentioning Bill Evans. Metal Biker Dude thinks that the only reason a white guy would be with Miles Davis is because they needed a token white guy. If he knew Miles he would know that Miles would never pick a token white guy to be in his band. Bill Evans was on the studio album because Miles thought that his sound fit best with the particular songs he played on that album. Miles didn't think that Bill Evans could swing so he had Winton Kelly play on those particular songs that swung like Freddy Freeloder and the title track So What.
@@beaujac311 all true about Miles and Evans. His choice of Wynton kelly on Freddie Freeloader was perfect for that song too.
Actually with this, you killed two birds with one stone (jazz pun intended), the guy in the sax was John Coltrane. Everyone that passed by Miles's band became great if they weren't already.
You can hear a lot of Coltrane's influence in metal. If you listen to guitar solos you hear those riffs and runs. Bird too. Trane's My Favorite Things is a must listen!!
The intro where miles plays, the band sounds like a song I recall as “Trader Joe’s”. But my memory is from decades ago. Was there music with that title or as part of song?
A good way to get into Miles is to listen to the albums arranged by Gil Evans
I think you should have maybe listed to the studio recording, but I’m only three minutes into you video and I’ll watch it through. Very interesting and worthwhile footage btw (which I’ve seen before). But the studio recording is so iconic (a word I hate but it actually applies in this case) that I think it would have been the best choice. It also contains my favorite version. I’ve never liked the live ones as much. That recording session had such a magic to it! That being said, I’m enjoying your video and your reaction. Glad you are digging it. Probably everything I just said is at least half wrong. From the way you are enjoying it this is a great choice! I was thinking you might enjoy the studio recording better and have a better reaction, but since you really got into this it was a good choice. But do listed to the album Kind of Blue which starts out with So What. Also listen to some Charles Mingus! Do a reaction to Charles Mingus, if you haven’t already. I suggest Passions of a Woman Loved or Tonight at Noon from the album Tonight at Noon.
Ohh Miles f-ing Davis no less. Great!
Kind of Blue is the greatest Jazz record ever made
And by the way, that's Coltrain playing that mind bending sax solo on So What
Blues->Electric Blues->Blues Rock->Heavy Metal
As if you weren't being treated enough by a Miles Davis performance, but then John Coltrane appears in frame and takes it away. So good.
Try to check out Charles Mingus - Fables of Fabus as well. Awesome too
Charles Mingus - 'Moanin'
Coltrane on sax man that was a band
This is the best jazz album ever made
I love the jazz!!
Miles davis & john coltraine on sax
The only way cats will get to great music is to have an open mind, like you obviously do. Right on.
Ok Miles is the coolest cat who ever lived and John Coltrane was God on the Saxophone.
John Coltrane is off the chain.
Cool choice man...Maynard G. Krebs was his biggest fan. Only us 65 plus people will get that one! Dave Brubeck is so smooth!! You must give him a listen. If it's good...it doesn't matter what genre it was. These Jazz front players were the shredders of their day!!
Miles is magic
Miles Davis - Bit ches Brew is a classic if u wanna peep more of him!
Art Blakley is a jazz drummer you should try
Greetings from brazil
Please explore more jazz I beg you .
This is literally the first song to listen to in jazz
I played jzzz before I even really knew any jazz. School band is nice. The first jazz I got into myself was art
Another big Jazz name to check out: Charles Mingus
My friend, good job letting yourself into the world of jazz, but you made the wrong move by opting for the live version over the studio. The album this is from, Kind of Blue, is considered one of the most important albums in recorded jazz history, and is thought by many to be one of if not the finest music albums period. As for me, once I put the cd in around Mojave and just let it play because I couldn't think of a good reason to take it out until around Austin TX. Do yourself a favor and take the time to treat yourself to Kind of Blue.
Hey Dirty, been watching a couple of the old video's again and think you like Billy Strings - dust in a baggy greetz from the Netherlands
Please check out George Benson's 6 to 4.
John Coltraine....And Miles Davis.... Gods!!
The sax here????...YOU DONT KNOW THE GREAT JOHN COLTRANE??
