  • On 15th July 1978, 40,000 anti-racists attended Manchester's largest-ever free music festival in Moss Side.
Steel Pulse, Buzzcocks, China Street and Exodus all performed without charge on a day that celebrated anti-racism and diversity.
This is the story of that day.

Nice one, a great effort by all concerned. As Bob Dickenson says, racism and fascism haven't gone away.

I was there for both rallies, Manchester and London. The summer of 1978 was just fantastic. Thanks for posting this reminder!

A momentous day in my life. I was an `extra` in the film Yanks at the time and unusually was asked if I was available to film on that Saturday but said that I was unavailable. It turned out that the directors had whittled down the extras to a small number who were to be filmed with Richard Gere in close up scenes in his truck and kept on longer for continuity reasons.....Joined the march at Piccadilly Gardens and had a fantastic day with friends who had travelled a distance and were staying at my place.......Never regretted that decision.

    Buzzcocks manager RICHARD BOON:
During the song 'Sixteen, which has the refrain I hate modern music / Disco boogie and pop, Pete changed the lyrics to, I hate modern music and the National Front / They go on an' on an' on an' on an' on / How I wish they would stop.
(quoted in the book ‘WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN by Daniel Rachel, published by Picador 2016).

This title is actually not cool, if you're the same as me and you've got basic common sense and a rational outlook towards life and view each other as an equal and only judge people on the way they treat or behave other people then like me you'd be thinking when has anyone said it's cool to be not racist....no it's just human nature to not be racist, people shouldn't racist because it's cool you shouldn't be racist because that's how people should be anyway not coz it's cool, sounds like some right wing slogan to try and win a minority vote.
