I have this kit and number of cymbals set up for playing low volume jazz. Another great choice of drum heads for the snare drum if you play a lot of brushes, is the Remo Ambassador Renaissance batter and resonant/snare side heads. Instead of a coating, the texture is built into the batter head which doesn't wear out while still giving excellent definition at low volume. I use the standard Remo Ambassador Coated batter heads on my toms with Remo Ambassador clear resonant heads. All are tuned higher for jazz. Although I haven't tried the Remo Fiberskyn Diplomats yet, I have heard them in person and they are excellent.
I have a ‘rock’ set with two bass drums and a multitude of other drums. The bass drums are 20” head, 18” deep. The toms are deep toms with Pinstripe heads. I have two snare drums, a 13” that I use for rock and an original Ludwig Supraphonic 5” for jazz. Both have Ambassador heads. I do have another set, but no space to set it up. So when playing jazz in my studio, I simply restrict myself to my 12” 13” and 14” toms and a few cymbals. We’re I to configure things strictly for jazz, I’d use coated Diplomats on the toms. They get the best brush response.
What's your honest first impression when you see drummers (on RUclips or otherwise) playing jazz on full-size, rock-type kits? Do you find yourself thinking that maybe they couldn't afford a second set of drums, or is your mind more dismissive? I ask because I've been thinking about uploading some videos of myself, but I don't have the budget to buy a good, quality bop kit, at the moment, with a set of Constantinoples, etc. Curious to hear your thoughts.
