On Tv not on cinema. Cinema throughout history has used this in very interesting ways and there so many memorable tracking shots in cinema history. As far as True Detective goes count it as Tv not cinema.

The acting in True Detective season 1 is so good you actually forget it's acting. Probably the most intelligently written tv show ever. From the first second you hear The Handsome Family's "far from any road" you know you're watching something special. This show stays with you.

Season 2 was bad. The plot lines were too meandering. The editing was fairly choppy. The characters weren't all that great. The dialogue was bad( especially Vince Vaughn's). THe cinematography was still good. Not great like s1. The overall story wasn't interesting, a murder connected to some gangs and stuff, the storytelling was awful. It felt like it tried to be like the wire, including gangs and stuff. The resolution was even worse.

That tracking shot by Cary Joji Fukunaga earned him an emmy win over Breaking Bad. Honestly Breaking Bad will always be my top favorite but True Detective is the only other show that touches Breaking Bad (and they did it within 8 episodes). Such a beautiful show. Easily my favourite aspect of the series was the exlporation into the character of Rust Cole. His views on the world and life really made me think about things. That's probably one of the greatest things a TV show (or a movie for that matter) can accomplish, making its viewers actually think about what they're watching and hearing, contemplate it and make decisions based on what they learn from it.

If you actually want a serious answer, this is what happened. First, I agree McCanaughey should've won not only because he was good in TD but b/c cranston has already gotten 3 emmys -__- but what general audience doesn't know is that it was a MESSAGE from the television industry:
"movie actors. Stay the f*ck away from television."
This is the same reason why Billy bob thornton was kind of snubbed too despite Fargo being the best show I've watched in 2014. They don't want movie actors who take advantage of TV as a promo or a short stepping stone to rehabilitate their career instead of committing to the industry like most tv actors do. Many critics think McCanaughey did this which contributed significantly to his Oscar (remember true detective was on air during oscar season) so basically the emmys punished him for it despite being quite blatant about it.
what they're saying is: fine, if you want to use TV for your own career, do it. But don't expect to receive any recognition from the industry. It's understandable though--no business industry wants decentralization of their control and power and this current trend towards blurring of TV and hollywood is what's instigating it.
credit to Grace from Beyond the trailer for this information.

I burned through the first 4 or 5 episodes of "Fargo" and admit it was WAY better than I expected, due largely in part to Billy Bong, however I never finished it. It was good but nowhere NEAR on the same level as True Detective. TD is amazing and demands a lot from it's viewer. TD isn't a show you can watch bits and pieces of, because you WILL miss something VERY important. Watching TD for the second time is like watching Usual Suspects, or Fight Club for the 2nd time. Chris, when you have time you should definitely check out Fargo or Hannibal. Fargo is like a 10 hour movie with great performances and Hannibal is probably one of the most beautiful shows out there while still managing to be dark and the most gruesome show on television.

    Def A+
The oner or tracking shot as you called it is so well done. The scene itself was so intense you didn't realize they were using it.
That's good cinematography. Not to use camera tricks for tricks sake.

+Benny Yu The first season was a masterpiece, season 2 especially in comparison to one just wasnt up to par for me for the most part. The acting or dialogue wasnt nearly as good even though the performances werent bad. There were some great moments like the mansion/party scene but those were just too few. The plot was all over the place and it wasnt really focused at all, Season 1 was honed in on two guys and their stories which were pretty much intertwined for the most part while season 2 had 4 main characters all of which with 5 different things going on while also going along with the plot. There was goofy moments too and I really didnt buy vince vaughn as the tough gangster guy, even though I could tell he was trying its just hard to buy like Adam Sandler playing a mob boss. Overall I'd give it like a 6.9 out of 10. Also it still looked great from a directorial stand point with great shots and cinematography.

This was one of the best pieces of "cinema" Ive ever watched. Its smart, entertaining, interesting, dark, almost scary, and in its own right beautiful. In my opinion it embodied what a story should be it had everything you want in a story even some humor sprinkled in here and there, I'm shocked that I stumbled on this on my own and no one told me about it. Its to good yet never really talked about, and he was right it is just a 8 hour movie.

THANK YOU!!! I've been hoping you would watch this for a while. This season was a MASTERPIECE and so creepy and disturbing, I really don't know if I'd be able to watch it again. If I did however I'd love to get a little more analysis into some of the darker themes going on within this brilliant show. So looking forward to season 2 and I really really hope they go a new route, yet manage to make it just as enthralling as this one. It would be cool if Rachel McAdams was actually one of the cops instead of the "wife" character we got with Michelle Monaghan (although she was terrific, it would be kind of repetitive to see the same character roles), but I'm not sure they'll do that.

I was watching the first episode of this with my dad when it aired. He said that it had gotten really great reviews, so naturally I was on board. Now a thing you need to know about my dad is that, he does not like good movies!
I mean, he think he does: But he DOES NOT! The best example I can give, is when I talked about Fight Club, and how it's one of the best narrated movies ever, and he just went: "Yeah, I'm never going to watch that movie" and that was just the end of that discussion!
So, back to the True Detective. We were about ten minutes in, and he just changes the channel! He CHANGED THE F*ING CHANNEL! WHO THE HELL? WHY THE HELL?
    *Calm down... calm... down....*
Anyway, I decided that, rather than try to talk to him about the series, I go watch it online later, since I already tried to talk to him about Fight Club, and the best/only argument that he had was: "I just don't want to watch a movie about fighting" and as much as I tried, I could not convince the man that it is NOT ABOUT FIGHTING!
    *Calm down... calm... down....*

True Detective easily topped my list of TV shows, and surpassed Breaking Bad in my opinion. McConaughey was definetly robbed at the emmys. If you like these types of shows (not the fact that it's an Anthology series but rather the quality and cinematic feel) you should also check out The Knick (period piece medical drama) and Penny Dreadful (Classic horror themes with a modern edge set in late Victorian era). The fact that they have just concluded their first seasons this year might dissuade you to check them out, but in my opinion are definitely worth the watch as of now. So if you aren't willing to do so now, keep them in mind or on your watchlist and check them out whenever they end (though obviously we'll both find out at that time if they can hold onto the quality that they've presented throughout their solid introductions). I also loved True Detective for all the reasons you listed above. I hope the direction and performances of the second season can match what we've see so far!

Probably the greatest TV show of all time. Season 1 is great in every single aspect you can think of. The story is excellent (feels very raw and realistic), the dialogue is deep and very philosophical at many points (especially Rust), the acting by everyone is seriously the best I have seen (even the small kids acted very well), the soundtrack is ominous and matches perfectly with the shows themes, the cinematography is great and truly set the mood of the show, like seriously I have never such high quality well developed TV show like this. People should watch season 1 of True Detective. 10/10 for me and I dont like perfection but this is the closest to perfection there is.

This show also woke me up at times when I was working crazy late hours. I've heard complaints about the disjointed pacing, I feel these critics have missed the mark about what is intentional by the directorial staff. Phenomenal television. The desire to get a conversation over in as few words as possible because you don’t like who you’re talking to but a conversation must occur…….Love it!

    YEAAAAAAH!!!
I´m so glad you liked it so much!
it really is one of the best (if not the best) American TV SHOW
I love GAME OF THRONES but this seasson of TRUE DETECTIVE was so satisfyingly good. I was kinda sad when i found out the next seasson was going to be with two diferent lead performances but if the writing is THIS good i can forgive them
