You will need deer netting for Muntjac as they will easily get through your fence and larger breeds have been regularly seen vaulting a ten feet hedge above ground we placed last year along our drive.
Stu I love your optimism that just a post and rail fence will keep the deer out. Seeing the paddock once it's all clear and done will be great, seeing it now will just make you want to go out and work on it all the time I recon
Seriously jealous Stuart. I'm thinking of what I'd do with the property if I owned it. Like others who love this channel I'll be looking forward to seeing what you do over time. Keep em coming mate.
Really great job! I am just starting discussions with owner of neighbouring plot about the acquisition of some land, and was looking at simple post and rail fence to keep things light and open. Looks a great project.
We love watching your channel. Just a thought about the deer getting into your garden. We had to put deer netting on our fence which is similar to your new fence as they just stepped through it and ate all the buds on our roses and anything else they fancied.Hoping the netting will stop that happening again. Always look forward to the new videos. and the new land videos have to say. i pinch a lot of your ideas. they helped me along a lot of my jobs. thanks 👍
I've only recently found your channel after a reference to it elsewhere. Enjoying catching up on your previous videos. Liked your little reference to the Restoration Couple in this one, they're another of my favourite channels.
So the proper top rail height is at a comfortable leaning height. Which means my second rail needs to be a good height for me to sit on the top rail and prop my feet at the most stable angle for my knee bend. I almost never have the luxury of building fences on flat level ground so that laser level may not do me much good on my hilly land. Your fence looks good and you put some good thought into it. Good work.
Great channel straight to the point and no waffle ... Wish I had that much land at the back . Would be tempted to build a Nuclear fallout shelter , Especially in todays climate ......
@@ProperDIY I remember him building a bunker in his back garden a few years ago Stuart, You would never know it was there when it was finished. I didn't know he had built a tunnel though must give it a watch ..... After watching your video on building Wooden planters I ended up making 2 square planters and an Octogon, Had plenty of compliments from the neighbors ......
Very nice fence Stuart, but my lovey, i have personally seen a Kudu jump over a 6mtr high wire fence from a standing position…..we used to live on a farm quite some years ago, and the kudu used to jump into the veg garden and eat the cabbages…..so as your previous commenter says, you will need to get netting.
Well, thats really straight. All the comments of lasers aside, i have one to, thats really level en that you can see. The jig is a great tip, i will use it on my fence. Thnx!!
You'll also need a piece of straw to chew on while contemplating don't forget! A lovely looking and sturdy fence and the jig was something that I wouldn't have thought of so thanks for that 🙂
By chance, recently, I had some black Cuprinol wood preserver which I used for horizontal and diagonal members of a fence-screen with the verticals left brown. It looks so good, I'll do it in future for all our fencing
Would be interesting to see a demonstration of using a water level - see the accuracy and how long it takes - and if a laser is worth the money for home use.
Measure one post mark a line wack a nail in string line Measure last post nail on line all the other post now line up along the string also shows if the fence is straight or if you need to move any. Fencing and landscape installation done for years. Very cheap very quick very easy...
The first to really spot the reason to take down the old fence - well done! It certainly does open it up and actually makes us feel much more in the country. Thanks Paul
As always another great video. Those are some serious screws to hold the rails on! Love watching your process, being in the US I can't always follow the details. For example, would love to get one of those laser levels. I have tried and they aren't available over here. Keep up the good work and enjoy a cup of coffee leaning on your fence watching your garden grow. You might need to buy a small tractor.
Deer in the paddock where you’re putting your vegetables. That’s sounds like another fencing job in late summer! On our allotments the deer in winter strip all the overwintering Brassica’s. In summer they trample down the autumn fruiting raspberries on the way to the lettuce. Mind you venison freezes very easily.
Nice job, but if you do get deer in the new land you've bought, I doubt a 3ft post and rail fence would stop them jumping onto your newly leveled lawn.
Sunflowers in amongst the laurels about 7 minutes in? And hope you said Hi to those posts who you fell out with last year ;-) Nice video as usual Stuart, May in the UK seems to have all sunshine and showers
Re Cool Hand Luke, from memory they are digging in a chain gang aren’t they? Always remember the lines at or near the end:” Now what we have here is a breakdown in communication” or something along those lines. Nice sunglasses too.
Like the fence, however if you're hoping to keep deer out you'll be disappointed. We have had a few deer either jump or step through a similar fence, decimating bushes and plants. Good luck. Love the channel
Country living. Next thing you know you'll be wearing a straw hat & chewing long lengths of grass😂. Definitely save all that "do me good" (wood). I have a stock pile of leftover off cuts which always comes in handy for something. Just wish I had your square footage to play with in my garden. Unusual for a new build to have so much land or the option to buy a paddock to go with it. Envious from Bucks. Keep em coming Stuart. Always good to get some inspiration watching others creating something useful.
Hi Stuart a proper job that, I might have missed it but why didn't you leave the middle and bottom rails on, cut the top off your post and just add a middle rail or as Cool Hand Luke would say , what we have here is a failure to communicate, keep up the good work , G.

I always thought your house was lovely but the garden looked a bit closed in even though it was massive. This makes it look infinite on to your new paddock. I built my first 6 foot fence during lockdown and umm yeh its not straight not perfect but it does have more screws in it than my house 😆. I cannot bring myself to do the task of taking it down to do again.

I should say the hedge is an established hedge on a four nearly five feet hedge bank that we tidied up and laid. We didn't plant a ten foot hedge.

Yes exactly
absolutely spot on with pining the boards, it's the same as fitting weather board to a house or shed, you should never go through the board underneath
great work as always! Can't wait to see you begin the big clear out of the paddock!

Very neat simple methods for accuracy, loved the top of post detail….a great post l would say. Greetings from Gloucester

Good job with the rail . I also like that you took care of reusing the material. My question is the same as Anthony B. what is the grander plan?
You could run the split fence boards through your new table saw - they would be a bit narrower but resuseable.
