Making a Kinetic Sculpture with a Laser Cutter

- Today, we'll be designing, laser cutting, and assembling a custom kinetic sculpture. There will be two layers with similar patterns. One layer will have a ball bearing at the center that allows it to spin and create an optical illusion effect.

This was fun. Next one automate it by using a tyc-50 synchronous motor. I use them on my wife’s cup turner and they move just slow enough. Your work is amazing. Just my opinion, if you would put a miniature one on top of the bearing that would make it perfect. I just made my first clock face for a wedding gift for a dear friend’s daughter. Cutting it tomorrow. The monogram I designed also will be cut out of walnut and inlaid. The numbers and hash marks will be engraved. Learning from you and others have made this possible. So thank you Tim. Can’t wait for the next one
That’s a great idea! I’m not planning to use a motor yet, but it’s been on my list of things to try. I’m slowly getting into projects with moving parts so I appreciate the tip 😁
Hey! Thank you so much for sharing your process. This is so so cool.
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it
Woohoo, I'm loving your channel!
Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying my projects!
Nice. I plan on making some of these.
Thanks! It’s a fun project to make. I still have a lot to learn with the pattern design so the optical illusion effect is better. Good luck with yours!
I just recently purchased a laser cutter, and one of the big things I want to use it for is creating kinetic sculptures. I love all things mechanical. I have already created a 24 to 12 geared mechanism that has three layers with a kind of decorative scrollwork chassis that allows you to kind of fidget with the bigger gear with your thumb, and rotates a little circular scene engraved into the smaller gear through a viewing window. I keep it at my desk at work and kind of mess with it when I'm thinking...like a fidget spinner...I honestly like the design process almost as much as rhe actual making. What is the software you are using? I think you said Rhinoceros. Ive never heard of it.
Kinetic sculptures are really fun to design and make. I still have a long way to go with my designs. Using gears could make it more interesting by having multiple moving parts. I use a software called Rhinoceros, which is for high level 3D modeling of things like yachts, jewelry, and other things.
