I think you summed up the argument against the idea that 'normality' is an invention of modern capitalism, when in this video you used the words 'behaving or appearing in ways that were seen as deviating from what was expected'. People may not have used the word normality, but they had expectations based on what they commonly saw around them, and what had historically been the case in their experience all of which of course were reinforced by social norms. Those expectations defined their sense of what in our language is called 'normality'. I agree with you that the 20th century communist states, and those that claim that term for themselves today, were and are not communist.
"that's not *real* communism" is not a valid claim. Where is the real communism then? Do all forms of modernity not share the same mass production war on variation?
