You explore the way I have for my whole life. Ive live with a muscle disease that has threatened to keep me on the paved roads. I have persisted and its only this year at 67 yrs old, that I have had to cut way back on my trail walking. While I wait for this flare to burn out I watch your beautiful videos and I’m not so lonely for the woods. Thank you. For your good work.
A very nice hike WW! I haven't seen a Woodcock for many years. I remember when people hunted them as a game bird. Don't know if they are still hunted, hope not. The road I live on was a narrow dirt one with a wooden bridge. If fact, the front of my 8 acres along this road was where we'd often see them when I was a kid. All paved now of corse with a crappy bridge that often floods. It's paved over 5-6 concrete pipes, heavy rain, closed road. It was great to see that bird, what a great treat and WW Bonus! Love the bluetts? flowers. They are delicate and beautiful en masse. I didn't see the woodcock, but it is pretty cool when you cross the path of wildlife unexpectedly. I have never seen so many butterflies in one place. Guess they like dung. That squirrel reminded me of my mother and I circling a telephone pole hiding from my father when I was a kid. It works!

Isn't it great that every hike is different & you can always find something unique; the feeding butterflies are a good example...thanks! Regarding the woodcock, I was fortunate to go to a talk & demonstration about the woodcock dance at Jacobsburg Park several years ago. It was really cool to hear the noise they make when soaring high & then fluttering downward. The neat thing is that all age groups attended.

Day lilies and lylocks always means it was someone’s home at one time.
Tiger lilies, snowdrops, some types of roses, and fruit trees.
I metal detect a lot and look for these signs. Check one here at my chan called hawk vs snake, crazy stuff I stumbled upon in the woods.
Old homesites are the best places to find heirloom plants.

I enjoyed this hike. We have those bluets too, though ours are more blue, and they are supposed to be somewhat rare here. We also have woodcocks, but I have only seen 3 of them in my life. All were wandering around oblivious to me, and the last one I saw was doing his little dance too. When you talked about how the woodcocks will try and lead you away from their nests, that reminded me of how the killdeer will do their broken wing routine to distract you and get you away from their nests. I have seen a group of them once.
Where I grew up the Kildeers built their nests in the center of gravel driveways. Looking for the nests was cool- now you don’t see it, now you do! Perfect camo indeed. Mama bird did the same dance to lure you away.
At first I thought you may have encountered a Bigfoot on the trail, but a woodcock is exiting also. :)

Cute little flowers . I did look up the woodcock and they do funny dance moves, people have put music to them, fun to see...babies to.Nice butterfly's ,they look like a bunch of leaves. 👍
You have some interesting forest structures in your footage. A beauty at timestamp 8:40 !!! a couple of blatant tree breaks, some leaners (one into a tripod at 15:30), some tripods and even what looked like blockage! A real bonus to watching your videos. Thank You.
New subscriber here. Really enjoy your videos and the understated and humble way you present them. I do not know how this showed up on my "recommended" list on RUclips but I'm glad it did. I used to live in Center City and drive up the East River (err, Kelly) drive to Henry Avenue and park at the Valley View Inn and go on long hikes from Montco to Lincoln Drive on Forbidden Drive so I really enjoyed your ones of that park. Also, used to have a cabin near Palmerton and Lake Beltzville and enjoyed that. Wonder if you ever did the long trail from Bowmanstown to Allentown or do you avoid developed trails like that one?

I've hunted this area for many years. The lower road, the Hanover trail, takes you back between fields 14 and 15. If you go all the way back and cross the small bridge, you will come to a split. Stay to the left and there's a trail that goes to the right. If you follow that trail for about a quarter mile or so, there's a tombstone on the left side of the trail. I belive the last name is Buffington. Last time I was back there, someone placed a new headstone next to the old headstone. Thought maybe you would be interested in checking this out.

After you cross the bridge, stay to the right, not the left. Lol. Glad I reread that. If you go left you'll end up on top of the mountain near tower city. I miss going back there. Since my knees and back started giving me issues, I can't do it anymore.
A few weeks ago it was skunk smells and cocoa, now butterflies feasting on poop. The contrasts and incongruities of nature are boundless, what's next? Bigfoot rehearsing Hamlet's "To be or not to be..." soliloquy or Pixies pole dancing. At this point in a world gone mad, it wouldn't be surprising if it somewhere out there both are happening.

Head over to Blue Marsh early spring(March/April) at the State Hill launch area. The woodcock perform their mating flights. The Rangers used to do a program years ago, not sure if they still host them or not.
In South Jersey we call it "a crick". Big Timber Crick. I can see the Woodcock...you nearly stepped on it.

You don’t want to build in the valley bottom, as there could be flooding and cold settles in the bottom, you also don’t want to be on the top of a ridge the wind would not be good for keeping warm or for your garden.
I used to hunt woodcock with my dad and they are actually a migratory bird and are classified by federal gov't as such so we had to plug our shot guns for 3 shells.
What do they taste like?
I like the butterflies. Very nice.
Killdeer do that a lot also. Butterflies love minerals. The pygmies use them for tracking game because they are attacked to the minerals in the animals pee.
Have you ever been to the old Hession graveyard that is located in Franklin County in the game lands in Horse Valley (I can’t remember if it’s upper or lower horse valley). It’s pretty cool.

Butterflies like to lick salt off of things. This is often why they congregate on mud, as minerals in the mud contain salt. There's probably some salty goodness in that poop.

Butterflies do like dung and mud, they get salt and nutrients from it. I have always noticed butterflies around com patties and barnyards

You mentioned at the beginning of the video of mysterious tree circles; Weiser State Forest just below Tower City has those same ones; I was always curious about what they meant or what you possibly know.
I never associated butterflies with poop before. Interesting!

Nice vid. I hate when Grouse and Woodcock shoot up like that right in front. More so the fact that I don't see them right before they take flight. A group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope. Your video capture is perfect enough to see where that name came from.
Killdeer aslo nest on the ground and will act wounded to lead a predator away from the nest.

Pocket-poncho, in it's package, tucked in a pocket of your bag - and ya don't hafta worry about getting your equipment wet if you get caught in a sudden cloud-burst. Woodcocks, killdeer, plovers, sandpipers - their hatchlings are like poultry, and run around after they come out the egg. The hen probably returned when you went around the bend, and led her young'uns away.
I saw butterflies gather like that once before along a river bank. But there was an old can of beer they were on. I figured the fermenting sugar smell must attract them. But its funny to think that butterflies get drunk.
Butterflys like poop, can't believe that, thought they love flowers.. Very interesting, you are so smart.

From other sites And From the back of my Property in Extreme Northeast Wisconsin. The unnatural stacking of logs/ Trees . Ten too 12 Foot trees stacked with the roots up side down. Giant X in the middle of nowhere .And leanto. Teepees of sticks.If you want some great example's go to World Bigfoot Radio" here on Utube. I personally I experienced " rock clanking" small rocks thrown in my general detection. And two years ago aroar that was about 10 seconds long . Thank for asking.

Why, I wonder, would the Bigfoot stack trees root side up? Interesting. Leantos and teepees of sticks, again, I would have thought the landowner would do that. But, then again, since it's extreme northeast WI, who would venture up there?!? I'd be scared out of my wits if I had rocks thrown at me, and hearing those roars too!!! In the past, and the recent past, I have walked alone on trails in the woods. But now, I going to reconsider doing that. Is it possible that bigfoot is in every state? Thanks too for the Utube title. I've had a grouse so something similar it was under a small bush night on the side of the trail.
There are a lot of woodcocks behind my house.I have four wheeler trails leading to logging roads where I ride and the woodcocks always sit in the middle of the trails and fly up right in front of me.

I think that bird may have been a long billed snipe. Similar to the woodcock but it has a distinctive long stripe (which that bird had) at the base of the underwing. They're more common here in Chester County than the woodcock. Looking back on the film you

Coyotes killed off all the ruffed Grouse out here in Western PA.
Nice film, I read the caption 'Unexpected Encounter'and thought I might get a glimpse of Bigfoot or the Mothman,but no matter, it was still an illuminating hike.All the best from England.

My parents live north of the mountain from Cliff in Schuylkil County, and they have a pilleated woodpecker that comes to their bird feeder.

The flowers look as they may have been planted by a family sometime ago or something? They look square in shape or something?
