- I had a chance to play the demo for The Alliance Alive yesterday and I'm totally hooked! This is exactly the kind of JPRG that I've been looking for, and it's coming out tomorrow! If you haven't had a chance to play this yet, and you have a 3DS, try the demo out for sure!

Guys, this game slays. You've GOT to try it out!
hi, found this channel thanks to this video, this game has been on my radar since last year, the launch edition looks pretty cool
who uploads at 4 am. also good hear. been effy about picking this up before finishing radiant historia, atm it's fuckin great
please! you have to try Valkyrie Profile series
Never heard of it until now, thank you a lot for the awesome recommendation. I needed a game like this!
Dark Pixel Gaming downloading, it may EVEN replace Ever oasis on my wishlist
News broke out a few days ago that The Alliance Alive is getting an HD remaster release that is coming to PS4, Switch, and PC in Japan for Fall 2019.
Hope it gets released in the us.
Kameron Bartley it actually is, check it out on NISA
Yep! Physical and digital to boot for this year. I need to get my wallet ready for another dip then.
@@theguilty999 sweet. I want to see the game in even better graphics.
I just bought it for ps4 unfortunately I wanted the switch version but they didnt have it at gamestop
"From the guy who wrote suikoden 1,2 and 3" this is more than enough reason for me to buy it cant wait...
Ironically Suikoden 5 had the best story of the franchise...
DesMondesBlut
Man, I heard many people say that and really looked forward to getting into it seeing how Suikoden 2 is probably my highest ranked JRPG story.
But man was I disappointed by Suikoden 5. I'm completely at loss as to how people consider it even remotely close to Suikoden 2, much less better.
Hmm... The plot twist relatively early in the game and many character deaths, betrayal and tons of melodrama made Suikoden V so amazing. I most certainly only remember one particular moment or rather death that made me really emotionally attached to Suikoden 2 on the other hand, so i'm quite the opposite. I personally never understood the hype for Suikoden 2. Don't get me wrong, i respect everyones opinion and would never say that your feelings towards the game are wrong nor do i say it was a bad game, far from it... I just didn't care that much for it or the characters. It's just a matter of tastes.
Yeah that made it an instabuy for me
Totally agree with this, Suikoden II has great JRPG story above all JRPG
Never been sold on a game faster
"Writer of Suikoden and composer of FFXIII." Instantly bought. Suikoden is the biggest loss of a series I've ever had. And as much as Utawarerumono and Valkyria Chronicles kind of filled it, it's still not going to be the same as if Murayama wrote it. And well, the music for FFXIII is the best part of that game. Possibly the best music in the whole series. The perfect blend of orchestration and electronica.
What would've thought that 11 months later, I'll have an HD port in the Switch.
Suikoden 1 & 2 writer, say no more i'm definitely getting this game
just realized its already out where i'm from
I love this kind of chibi art style. It works so well with JRPGs.
Just played the demo on your recommendation and absolutely loved it. I think I’ll be picking this up too, even though I haven’t touched Radiant Historia yet. Thanks for the rec!!!!!
The moment you mentioned the comment about how the combat evolution was like FF2 you had my like and subscribe. THANK YOU for remembering this when nobody else did.
This video is amazing, and could also serve as an intro to a much longer video essay. Instead I'm using that momentum to expand upon itself, it tells us to play the game instead, giving that momentum to us to use. It's wonderful
This game wasn't on my radar at all, but now I'm super hyped. Will definitely be giving it a proper look.
yea this game was totally unknown to me until i saw someone talking about it on kotaku...and i'm a guy that generally takes note of all the upcoming jrpgs..
Pretty useful and interesting review I saw this game in the online store and the description is meh at most, this man has helped sell 1 game (once I get the money) without spoiling the game.
Dude, I love your videos. Your enthusiasm got me back into JRPG's. I haven't played them in years. Glad to be back!
Great review. Ive had this in my backlog for a while and about 3 hours in and loving it so far it kinda has a bravely default style to it. I love that they did away with random encounters in a lot of rpgs that stuff gets so tedious
I didn't even know this was coming out and it is made by a dream-team of people! Can't wait!
Just thought I'd let you know mike the team that did final fantasy 2 went on to do the SaGa series with its level progression and unique world navigation who also made this game
Toby Peralta Akitoshi Kawazu is his name.
SaGa Frontier>SaGa Frontier II fight me.
Also doesn't Octopath Traveler seem like a SaGa game?
Octopath Traveler definitely comes across as a SaGa game.
Michael Lewis Octopath seems to be taking inspiration from a number of games, from SaGa to Japan only games like Live-A-Live and Seiken Densetsu 3
I've played the new Switch release of Romancing Saga 2! Pretty interesting game, if a little to light on story. -Mike
Dark Pixel Gaming yeah mike it's pretty light on it but its more of a open world jrpg. So its more of a quest based structure
"... He decided to bring on Yoshitaka Murayama" *instant goosebumps
I just finished the demo and i can completely understand where you're coming from. I was a little confused when I wasn't getting EXP from battles but i was still getting upgraded. But now i know and i love the fact that this game doesn't have the traditional gain EXP to get stronger. It reminds me of legend of Zelda, which i love. And this game also gives me Bravely default vibes as well as the Tales of series.
Alright. You've convinced me. I like a lot of oldschool so I'll give this baby a shot
So how was it? Any feedback? I am getting to buy several games on eshop rn
Already had it pre-ordered. More people need to know about this game. As one of the rare few that enjoyed Legend of Legacy I've been super stoked about this. They essentially solved all the problems I had with that game and kept all the things I liked while also polishing them up.
I didn't know other fans of Legend of Legacy existed. :p I enjoyed that game.
Yeah! A bit rough around the edges, but enjoyable nevertheless :3
I preordered this game last year when it released in Japan after reading about the team behind the project and hearing Hamauzu's music for the game. I pretty much refused to look up any new info on the game since then, so I am REALLY glad you dug the demo. Looking forward to playing it really soon!
I also have had some RPG burnout as I've tried playing so many recently and haven't found anything that sticks. I'm so happy I'm subbed to this channel because otherwise I wouldn't know about this game that looks so good.
I'm also picking up this game tomorrow. I've been following the game for the last few months since its announcement coming to North America.
I just hope this game sells enough copies/surpass expections to encourage future games like this.
To be completely honest, I got about three minutes in before I started looking for the Amazon order page. I am extremely excited about the features outlined in here. This sounds like something I have been looking for for years.
You should try Bravely Default, it's really wonderful! It takes the traditional turn-based combat but adds a twist, and the music as well as the 3D effects are absolutely mesmerizing! Definitely one of the best jrpg out there
I'm a big fan of Bravely Default! Haven't played the second one though because I heard the story is pretty bad. -Mike
Bravely Default is nice, but boy did I get bored before the end up the first game. So I refused to play the sequel.
I actually thought Bravely Second's story was pretty damn solid. It's that kind of story that you would enjoy far more after playing for the second time, though it's hard to explain without giving anything away...
It's very well written in the sense that "second" is a recurring theme throughout the game, as the title suggests.
The gameplay was polished too, so it was a great game overall imo.
Dark Pixel Gaming Whoever told ya that was lieing
I've already been sooooooo hyped for this game since it was announced. I CAN NOT wait to play it.
You know what would be a palette cleanser from all these JRPG's? Nights into Dreams. You can go from feeling burnt out from games to being plain old confused 👍
H.D Beird It's weird you mentioned a Saturn classic... When he mentioned liking leveling up skills by using then, I immediately thought of Mystaria.
Afraid I missed that one. Maybe he should play Burning Rangers by Sonic Team too. Basically, let's all pile on the confusion to Mike like the good fans we are.
I was never excited about the 3DS, but this does look like a great game
There's an interesting text interview with the producer/director of "The Legend of Legacy" and "The Alliance Alive" that I stumbled on a few months ago. The original interview was from the Japanese website Dengeki Online, but the translation was in a webpage called subcultured impression. I think it's an interesting read and that maybe you should look into when you get the chance.
There are also some RUclips videos from Furyu that go behind the scenes of the game's development. The videos are in Japanese, but sadly there are no subtitles.
I'll totally be checking this game out though. Thanks for getting word out!
It’s basically a new SaGa game and I love that
I just finished SMT4 Apocalypse and was looking to see what I was going to play next.
This looks like something going back to JRPG roots without having a lot of the bad oldschool JRPG mechanics have (like unavoidable random encounters).
Thanks for this!
Wow a 3DS game! I'm going to check this out I have to keep my little old 3DS alive and hold out on buying a switch as long as I can
Michael Switzer My dear 3DS is about 6 years old... my dear friend!
someones poor
Cencil if u are saying I have no cash for a switch then yes lol I'm working on saving money to buy a home for myself and girlfriend so it's a little more important then a switch I also really like my zelda edition new 3DS and it's a shame it's already old tech
You have sold me. Now to put it on the shelf along with 20 other games I should be playing, but can't because I'm playing a grindy phone game.
I knew about Alliance Alive just because of Hamauzu Masashi, a very talented composer no less.
I've been excited for this game for a long time now. I remember watching Japanese RUclips videos and commenting "Bring to the west!". Thinking they'd never localize it after the poor reputation of Legend if Legacy. I'm so glad they gave us the chance to play this game.
I’ve never even heard of this before but the demo is downloading now and I’m stoked! Thanks, man.
As a Sony fan I am very very happy this is coming to get a PS4 release.
Man ever since the world of romancing saga introduce me to weapon proficiency, it became one of my favorites kind of in depth features in a rpg game. Slap on the mastermind behind Suikoden, I gotta get a 3ds to play this game!
Kinda late but thanks for doing such a complete and nice review about this game, gonna purchase my copy for the 3DS because of you.
Mmm, I love it! I was hoping you guys would talk about The Alliance Alive! Can't wait for my copy tomorrow!
Welp, turns out I have been looking for this game too.
I'm so happy. My cousin just bought me this game as a graduation present. 😄
I had a good feeling about this game so I preordered it a while ago. Now I’m stoked to get it tomorrow!
I can already see people talking in like 5 years about this game as a hidden gem for the 3ds
So hidden that it's not on the eShop anymore.
Well, ye but it's on the Switch now, so it's hardly more 'hidden'.
Are they?
Downloading the demo right now! That art style is sooooo satisfying to look at. Your description triggers that little part of my brain that makes my fingers involuntarily do the lewd insatiable desire groping gesture at my computer screen. I'm trembling with anticipation! Drip drip drip drip! My 3DS is making sounds to tease me for salivating so profusely.
Just bought it thanks to you, Mike! I highly value your opinion.
Just wait til you get the glider. Prepare to be even more enamored with the world map.
oh my god THERE'S A GLIDER?!
I'm kind of addicted to gliders since Guild Wars 2 1st expansion and Zelda Breath of the Wild now haha
Glad to see that someone else is looking forward to this game. I thought I was all alone since it seems that I'm the only person that enjoyed The Legend of Legacy.
It’s on the 3ds :( if only it was on the switch. It’s so weird they haven’t done any marketing or hype on this game, it looks awesome and this is the first time I’ve heard of it
I didn't know about this game until now! Guess I better give it a shot, Thanks man :D Here have a new sub!
By the way, now this means you'll be ready to tackle the more complex *SaGa games*
Start with *Romancing SaGa 2* (little story, VERY systems dependent, you choose your heir to your kingdom), *SaGa Frontier* (story driven, although development was cut short for few routes in the game) or *Romancing SaGa remake PS2* (Do-Whatever-You-Want Simulator).
Also, check out the series artist, *Tomomi Kobayashi* . Her art easily rivals Amano's.
I've played the recent release of Romancing SaGa 2 on the Switch a little bit and thought it was a pretty interesting game! -Mike
Saga Frontier was mind-blowing for me as a teenager.
Caleb SaGa Frontier is blowing my mind as an adult.
It gets better they also announced that Saga Scarlet grace is coming out too!
Saga Scarlet?
My goal is to finish Etrian Odyssey V (not counting the 6th stratum/post-game) before this comes out. I've reached the final boss yesterday, but I don't know if I'm strong enough to beat it.
Is there ever going to be a longer review video for The Alliance Alive? Would love to see this. Especially after how highly your impressions were with it. I’m about 10.5 hours in and I can’t put it down.
This just made me subscribe to your channel. Hearing that Hamauzu composed this game too? I must track this down in Australia! :O
You had me at Masashi Hamauzu.
But I don't own a 3DS.
I really enjoyed his work in XIII-2 how songs would mix to different genres was refreshing.
I also love such a system like in FF2, where your chars get slightly stronger at different stats, without an XP-bar and leveling up and it was the first thing I've noticed while playing the demo.
It feels more rewarding in such a game, if it just happens now and then, and not while watching an XP-bar over multiple fights till someone gets stronger.
I love how the music doesn't change for most of the normal encounters; it makes most of the game maintain this great relaxing tone that fits with the simplistic graphics.
I think the graphics are more fitting for 3DS than for any TV Console, but I guess it's better to have it ported than nothing. Still wish they added 3D features to it, though.
From the sound of it, you're getting the same sort of renewed love for the JRPG genre from this as I had from playing Bravely Default. I'm totally going to check this game out now and see if it can make me feel those sort of feelings again! :)
So how was it? Any feedback? I am getting to buy several games on eshop rn
It has a strong "Bravely" vibe to it. I dig it!!
The cutscenes and cinematography used in the game looks very well polished too judging from this. I haven't played a video game since Metroid came to 3DS so I'm really pumped to give this a try. You always give great recommendations Mike! Thanks!
A new, traditional style jrpg for the 3DS/2DS!? About time!!
Downloading the demo right now!
I will buy this one. I really like RPGs that has the growth type approach on improving the characters.
Amazing art style, and Barbarosa's design is neat. 'o'
I'm wary of Alliance Alive because of the previous game before it. Can't remember what it was called, but it didn't have much story at all. I tried the demo and I liked the combat, but I didn't like the progression to upgrade skills and the lack of character interactions. It doesn't need to be golden writing, but if it does an Etrian Odyssey, the world needs to be interesting. Lore essentially. Etrian Odyssey have it, but the main draw is definitely creating your own party.
Anyway, it definitely is more story-focused. Maybe I'll give it a shot. Either this or the other JRPG. Forgot the title of it too. Man, I have a hard time remembering titles.
bought the game as a result of this video as soon as I could and I'm already on my third playthrough. Interesting lore too, wish it was a little easier to get a hold of though.
I am definitely interested in this game even if the game is digital only in Europe. Its pretty exciting that Yoshitaka Murayama is writing the story, Suikoden 1-3 have really good wiriting imo. Plus Hamauzu is one of the better composers in the industry so I am pretty sure the music is going to be atleast great. I am playing Trails of Cold Steel 2 and Ni No Kuni 2 before I jump into this game tho.
I just hope that the gameplay will have some complexity to it.
I didn’t know this game existed until today. After this video, I’m going to buy it immediately. Thanks Mike :D
i want more videos about this game Mike! xp im playing right now and damm im loving it!best regards
Bought the game and loving it thanks to you! :)
Thanks for recommending this, it looks really good! Can I ask if you've played/finished Xenoblade 2? That game fits my bill for the "JRPG I've been looking for" and addresses a lot of points you raised in the video. It's definitely a JRPG classic worth playing through!
Have you played Persona 5? I could not put that game down. Poured 115 hours into in 9 days.
I put in 140 hrs my first playthrough in about 2 weeks. Couldn't put it down either. So far it's my favorite game of the last decade.
Lens Hunter talk about a poorly paced game
Well, I almost always like the start of persona games and their heavy focus on narrative and character introductions in the beginning. I wouldn't call it poor pacing for that reason but rather personal preference.
The localization isn't very good, though. And it gets extremely repetitive at points. They could have taken out at least a third of all the dialogue in the game, especially the messaging.
I found it pretty boring and tedious but I did play 3 & 4 before
There's way too much filler and unimportant dialogue and the characters are very shallow and only really have character development in the dungeon they're introduced in
I honestly found it to be a big step down from 3 and even 4 did the characters better
The gameplay was better than 3 & 4, but not by enough
Well darn, should have downloaded the demo last night. Will have to wait for now.
I can't wait to play it on my PS4 :)
looks like Bravely Default to me and that was a series that to this day, has me in love with jrpgs. So this will be an instant download by my standards
I thought I was the only one looking forward to this game!
When I heard “like FF2,” I tuned in. That new system piqued my interest. Another game along these lines is Ancient Domains of Mystery, which also added satiety, item wear/decay, and diety disposition. It also had known and avoidable encounters.
Cool to see this in a story RPG again.
There's also the SaGa franchise.
"I wish this was on Switch"
I wish this was on Vita
i wish this was on Steam :(
If it's any consolation, the third game of Bravely Default (Bravely Third?) will most likely end up on the Switch, and a lot of elements from it appear in The Alliance Alive.
Pablo P The Bravely Default team is the ones working on Octopath Traveller so it will be awhile lol
I wish this was on PS4
You sold me on this
This got me kinda hyped! Maybe we can see a full review eventually?
Maybe! If I can actually find the time to beat it! -Mike
I love the game so far. It still has levels hidden behind the scenes, but places more emphasis on formations and leveling skills in the right position (support for heals/buffs, guard for block/dodge, and attack for damage). The only nitpick really is that the lack of voice acting makes the cutscenes awkward.
I really wish this has 3D. The world map would have looked amazing
Atlus just keeps crushing it lately. They have quickly become one of my favorite developers of late!!
Atlus knows how to make em/pick em haha. They topped Square Enix for me as favorite publisher quite some time ago now. SE had X-2, then an online game, and XII and XIII were let downs for me. Atlus had Digital Devil Saga, Shadow Hearts (anyone remember that one?) then Disgaea and Persona stuff. Way back on the PS2! They've been my favorites for a long time now, rarely disappoint.
To each their own and all of that. I had been experiencing bad JRPG burnout before I played Persona 5 last year and pile drove through all 100 hours it took to do nearly everything the game had on offer. But other than that I had been struggling to enjoy much else in the genre outside of finally playing Trails of Cold Steel since the PC port came out a few months back. This looks interesting and has promise by being from the original Suikoden writer (even if my favorite game in that series ending up being Suikoden 5).
Downloaded the Demo last night and I'm in. Bought it!
I’m getting Bravely Default vibes just from the visuals!
I was proud to have faith in The Alliance Alive...
Me too! i preordered it shortly after it was announced, based on the team behind it alone.
Fido Kitsune Fox ps4?
Jason dp It's for 3DS.
I tried the demo, it was really good, gonna buy soonz once I clear out some of my ds rpgs
HA! Tokyo RPG Factory take notes. I love it.
The look, open world, and combat in this game reminds me of Suikoden Tierkries.
You know I hadn't heard of this game before watching this video and I've been looking for a JRPG kind of like this so I might check it out.
I hadn't even heard of this one. It looks incredible. I'll definitely have to pick it up.
Coolness. Octopath Traveler is actually my most anticipated (Switch) RPG, too, and I have The Alliance Alive, so this video makes me want to get to it quicker ... because I *loved* the Otcopath demo's battle system.
Now I know what I'm playing when I'm done with my current game -- going in handheld mode.
Some SaGa (FF Adventure) & FF2 influence here.
You had me at "Suikoden"
you didn't like Berseria combat? I think it's one of the best systems inside the Tales of-series (eventhough you can't put item use to auto)
It's at least much better than Zestiria...
Picked it up today after the recommendation!
XB2, DQ11, Radiant Historia 3DS, Lost Sphear (that demo was dang good!)
Tales of Berseria is absolutely amazing and has one of the greatest casts and stories of any JRPG, ever, period. It's a shame you're not really feeling it. I think you might just prefer older style games, and really there's nothing wrong with that.
Truly an excellent Tales games. I loved it :)
i keep seeing this at best buy and it's on sale for like $24 and even less with my GCU. so tempted every time i go there, but damnit i have so many games i still havent played on my 3ds
Get it!
Bought this game due to this video. This ain't no bs, this is the real deal.
