I should have put this in the video: I see too many comments on this video of people saying stuff like "am I autistic too?" This video is NOT a tool or resource for self diagnosis! If you think you may be autistic DO RESEARCH (stay away from Autism Speaks) before self diagnosing! Please!
Also, just don’t self diagnose in general. It’s not a very reliable way to get what you need such as medication (for obvious reasons) and you could be entirely wrong about being on the spectrum, you could have something else or be totally fine. Long story short it’s better to talk to a professional rather than self diagnosing.
@@DrWho160 there are many reasons self diagnosis is valid, 1: people who have self diagnosed have done research beforehand. 2: a proper diagnosis isn’t always accessible to those who need it especially because of inflation right now and a diagnosis is just a public label, if you’re diagnosed autistic, you were already autistic and most ppl who are diagnosed have been self diagnosed beforehand. Lastly, if someone is self diagnosed autistic, they know they’re autistic. Cuz sometimes, a professional won’t take you seriously and will say you have something else when you don’t and throw a bunch of dr*gs at you, and a professional diagnosis is made based on what you’re not masking. You know what you’re masking and what you’re not. By doing research for it yourself, you can figure out whether you’re really autistic or not and parts of the spectrum you have, and not everyone who gets diagnosed gets help with their needs. I know two autistic people other than myself (I’m proudly saying I am self diagnosed autistic) they both are diagnosed with autism and get no assistance with their needs and are still seen as neurotypical by their peers.
@@onelesslonelybelieber9179 there's multiple factors on why self - diagnosis is not valid. 1. You are not a professional. This means you are far more likely to make a mistake for your diagnosis. You could confuse it with for example with ADHD - they're similar in a lot of instances and even doctors can misdiagnose you at first. This can be very harmful to the person self-diagnosing because they need drugs to function properly and they're trying to go through life thinking they have autism when it's ADHD. Especially when you're the one diagnosing. The person diagnosing you should be objective in every instance and not many people are capable of doing so when it comes to themselves. We are not objective when it comes to ourselves. We're biased. 2. Diagnosis being a social label? It can really improve the person's life. Your school can be more accommodating, you'll get proper help with your mental state, a therapist can be assigned to you, you can get money from the government for your needs due to being disabled, you can take place in group therapies specifically for autistic people etc. Diagnosis from a medical health professional can improve your life a lot, please do not compare it to a self - diagnosis. I understand some people may not get enough help with what they need, but a proper diagnosis possibly saved one of my friends life. If you can get a professional diagnosis please do get it. That's a privilege so do take advantage of it. 3. I understand some people don't have such recourses. I understand if a person thinks there's a chance they might be autistic and they want to check it out. It's okay to do those things and say "hey i think I'm on the spectrum". However I do think self-diagnosing can be harmful to actual disabled people. A person misdiagnosing themselves can take away valuable resources for certain people, even if they're not disabled or they have another disorder or illness. They can hurt other people and themselves as well. Self - diagnosis can it fact make things worse for you. I'm not saying you're faking or you're not autistic, that's not my place to be. Although please stop encouraging self - diagnosis. It's extremely harmful and can lead to many misconceptions and problems. Please do explore yourself and find out what can be going on in your head, but please don't diagnose yourself! You just don't have the knowledge nor the ability to do that.
