Helicoid adapters aka macro adapters, have been around for decades. They made a comeback about 15 years ago when mirrorless was first floated.
Totally agree! I use the DLX Stretch to adapt Canon FD lenses to Sony and Mamiya 645 lenses to Fuji GFX. Makes a massive difference to the close focus distance for intimate portraits. Bought the first one in 2020... will eventually get the Leica M to Sony.
Wish they made these for PL lenses. The idea is great for not having to use diopters with Anamorphics, etc.
Noticed these on their channel some days go and I cant wait to get some for different cameras. Really cool that you tried it on various mounts. It goes another level and this would make stop motion more fun and give it that edge it needs.
Fan from Malaysia. Just want to say thank you for your videos. Because of you, I've rediscovered and found new ways to enjoy and experiment with photography. Especially with vintage lenses and now, an adapted projector lens. Keep up the good work and God bless you.
I use a similar adapter for Leica-M to Fuji-X from 7artisans and on top of that I mount several Vintage to M adapters for my old lenses. So in practice I only need one expensive adapter to adjust close focus and infinity on all my vintage lenses. Stacking adapters works great and it saves a lot of money as the simple mechanical ones are usually pretty cheap.
Great concept
Excellent to know that this device is available
Got one, they are great!
I think we understood the concept. Very useful for M lenses which due to limitation of range finder capabilities are usually limited to 0.7m mfd.
I want an adapter to analog Lenses that can write EXIF dato to the photo images, so a simple chip you can write to via USB-C from a computer or a phone, it will be so very nice to know which Lens (focal length) and aperture I have used !
I'm looking for the same thing! With all these specialty adapters out there, I find it strange that no one has made it. I'd buy one for each of my vintage lenses.
@@hanmariuspettersen I would also buy several adapters like that, but I have too many analog Lenses to mount adapters on all of them, if someone makes adapters like this, then it has to be excellent quality like fx the quality Novoflex makes . My all time favorite analog Lens are the Leica Macro Elmarit R 60mm 2.8
@@cameraprepper7938 Understandable! It would be great if one could easily use an app and a cable to quickly load different exif-presets.
oh we have that orange one for Leica lenses on our Sony a1, it works great!
Great find! Love the music track.
So it's like a variable extension tube built into the lens? I am going to definitely check this out.
This would be nice to have with the Canon FD 135 2.8. I’ve used an extension tube with it and it performed so well! Even wide open it’s really good! So if I could use this thing instead and not have to take the extension tube off every time I want to focus to infinity, that would be so nice!
I used to have NEX - Canon FD adapter with helicoid on my A7ii and while it was kinda flimsy it was really nice to use with Canon FD 17mm f4 to close up photos. Now I have modified it to have Olympus Mju-1 lens on it. Works great! (I used a faulty Mju-1 to get the lens.)
Looks really fun! Just wish there were more X Mount options
i've had one of those for my GH4 and 5 works great and wanted to buy one for all mounts but could not find them anymore. the nd filter is a a nice addition
M42 to Fuji fx? Can't find it :( Pretty much only using M42 these days.
Same for Canon. I need one to solve problem of hitting the rear element by the mirror on some M42 lenses. I even ready to lose infinity at some point
These are a bit pricey but then again so is my Nikkor collection. I might just buy one some day. Thanks for sharing.
And to further extend the possibilities is to reverse mount the lens.
I’ve had one for a couple years and the concept is lovely, in execution I found after a while the heliocoid can get a big stiff & it wears out pretty easily, i wouldn’t get it as my only adapter but it is fun to mess around with!
Amazing content
Looks great
I may not have this but my Techart adapters are fun to use and I always use them as my macros
awesome, gonna get one for my FD 35-105mm f3.5 that has terrible minimal focusing distance, thanks Mathieu! could you please measure the FD - NEX helicoid full extension in mm? thanks!
Cool! Shame they don't have a variety of them for my RF mount. I'd love to have one.
I just bought one of these bad boys to adapt Leica M lenses to Nikon Z. It's amazing how close I can focus now with these lenses.
Nice! Sincerely it would be great to have it for cmount lenses where is more sensible the plate distance for near and infinity focus.
3:40 of course, it's 65cm or 0.65m
That's super nice
How come do we have those kind of cool adapters being released and yet there's no decent c mount adapter
I need one of these in DKL for my Nikon cameras
needS. Good tip, thanks.
so its just an adjustable extension tube with built in mount conversion. So you still get infinity then rotate and get shorter close focus without infinity?.
Ahhhh yeah ma man, getting past infinity is the REAL draw here. Would get my new thrifty $20 silver Colorplan close enough on m4/3, Your channel has inspired me to the brink of glass insanity in one single year...thanks, I think. Don't forget to plug an occasional mint 50-70 yo bellows for us poor ultra-macro folk. 😭
Love it, want one of these for my helios now :) In general I like it when adapters doo something extra, so that it feels like a bonus. Even for relatively modern lenses, like the Canon EF-RF adapters that have a control ring or ND filter.
There's even a tilt AND shift adapter in one for EF to RF. Doesn't work on a lot of lenses, but it does on some with full movements and no vignetting. E.g. the Sigma 17-35 wide angle zoom for some reason can do full tilt and shift on everything beyond about 20mm, which is dope as hell. Lots of others too, many M42 ones seem to do well with movements, i think my helios does a fair amount, even. And obviously any medium format lenses can do all movements when adapted through that onto full frame. So I also functionally have a tilt shift 35, 50, 80, 45-85, and 150, from my various Pentax 645 lenses
@@gavinjenkins899 That is super cool! Had not heard of it. What’s the brand?
@@bramverhees755 i think its fotodiox? Theyre on B&H
it's like extention tube for macro
Am I missing something? 1:41 shows 0.60 cm, but it should be 60cm or .6 meters?
60cm is 0.6 meter
@@TheGuigotz yes. But onscreen it says 0.6 CM. Not 0.6 M
my question too. what unit of measure is CM?
@@slick8086 Centimeters, 100 centimeters is 1 meter.
@@toddpeterson5904 got it know. Yeah probably just typo or he got confused but you can check in the ruler he displays
What is the downsides to using this vs shooting with a normal adapter?
There is autofocus adapter from techart that works on the same principle
What if you use the adapter with a 1:1 macro lens, does it allow you to go past 1:1?
Avec un objo macro, ça aurait été sympa de voir un test
So it's basically an adjustable macro extension tube? Kinda cool I guess. Nowhere near the range of a set of extension tubes though.
Obi Wan Approved!
What is the benefit of this over the m42 bellows I am using? Or using extension tubes? Flexibility?
Yes you could switch back to infinity without changing the tube. Also you can also set your lens to various lengths and lens focus distance. While the tubes are fixed.
Wow. So simple, yet so effective. How do they work on lenses that no longer reach infinity, could this remedy that too, or are they set to "start" at then normal adapter flange distance? Great video, thanks Mathieu!
Well I don't see how an aditional adapter could get your lens closer to the sensor so I don't think this would work.
(I don't have this adapter)
The helicoids I have all focus beyond infinity but those are cheap $25 adapters from China. I have no idea if this Fotodiox model will do the same.
Am I dumb, but how would one go about getting this between Leica L-mount and M42? :(
You dont loose light using this?
They do exist with AF support.
Nextgen adapter in techart tzm-02 with autofocus 😉
Always great and useful info! Thanks Mathieu!
What do I need to adapt M42 to MFT?
Hello Mathieu, I hope you are well. I recently discovered your channel and it is serving as inspiration for the channel I intend to create, more focused on analog photography. Honestly, what is the difference between this adapter and the cheap helical adapters from Alixpress? Explain it to me please?
Or better yet, can't I get the same result by putting in a normal macro tube?
hey friend, i have a question. I see you are using the Minolta md 100mm f2.5, which I have the opportunity to buy. what I'm interested in, do you have experience with the older PF versions of that lens and in your opinion are they better compared to your MD? thank you 🙏
In my opinion the md lenses are superior
I have similar Andoer Adaper (rangefinder leica to E), but I've bought it around 5 years ago. So it's not a nearly new idea =)
I would be extremely nervous about the magnetically held filters crashing into my sensor when accidentally bumping the camera and "releasing" the "magnetic hold" 😬
Sounds like a serious design flaw to me.
that's why I don't use them most of the time
In the eighties there was a 2-time extender with such a variable extension. The only thing that bothered me was the poor quality of the image at the time.
Take my money!
1. The adapter shown here is not the best option if you need to mount an SLR lens and require as much extension as possible. Look for a straight helicoid adapter from an SLR mount to your mirrorless camera and you'll get at least 2x more extension than this one (a longer adapter will fit a longer helicoid). It is important with long lenses, because...
2. The longer the lens is, the more extension it requires to get into the macro range.
3. Avoid using helicoid adapters if your lens has floating elements for better close focus performance. Such lenses are designed for a specific mount flange distance; with a helicoid adapter, image quality will deteriorate. Unit focusing designs are fine.
They're alright, but they have no electric connections. Obviously a manual vintage lens doesn't need those, but that means I need multiple different adapters for manual and non manual lenses. E.g. i have a lot of manual and also a lot of autofocus canon lenses. And Also M42 ones that then pass through EF on my chain of adapters. So I need an electronic canon adapter anyway, then also this. Then maybe also separately a tilt shift... gets to be a bit much, I have one, but I use it less than I thought I would.
So its just a helicoid behind the lens? Gonna test with my helios and make a diy helicoid
If I have a EF camera mount, and want to use this with a M42 lens how do I do that?
a very simple and cheap M42 to EOS ring, get the one with the adjustable rotating inner brass ring
I don’t understand… I use SONY NEX… so which one would I need?
Depends on what lenses you want to adapt. If you want to use Canon FD lenses, you'd get the FD to E mount. Same for M42, then you'd want an M42 to E mount one.
Me: cries in DSLR
no mtf adapters? :'
接写ベローズつかえば?
Not seeing one for MFT 😢
I am selling one (Contax-Yashica to Sony E) right now on Ebay for 100 Euros or less! (I'm in Germany.)
Who need dedicated macro lenses when we got that adapter?
But stay away from the Pentax 67 adapters, because these lenses' mounts have different tolerances depending on when they were made, which means some might fit on some adapters, and others might not. Unless you are prepared to buy multiple adapters from different manufacturers and hope they fit.
how to adapt with this with my m42 lenses to Nikon Z ff?
Buy the m42 to Leica and then the Leica to Nikon z
@@MathieuStern or m42 to EF to get more travel and even closer focusing distance, or M42 to FD if you also have FD lenses
what unit of measure is a CM?
Centimeter
Is ben kenoby your favorite character from star wars?
I have this 1977 first edition figure in my collection, I think it's the most vintage looking one I have.
@@MathieuStern ohhhh tanks master to answer me
Are the units of measurement wrong? 0.6cm? Or 0.6m?

And what's new about helicoid adapters? Also, you forgot to describe it as "weird" as you often do in your videos.
Sssssht, someone mentioned that earlier but the comment got deleted. This is just a commercial in disguise.
