Nice instruction, have flyfished for 60yrs tied commercially for 50yrs bought and started tenkara 2 days ago never too late to learn. I was stationed on Okinawa, and remember going as far north as we could crossed streams so clear that looked a few feet deep when stepping in went right up to your head pristine full of small trout

*I love it **enjoyable.fishing** recommend I’m using it for my 1.0 Crankbaits and small Jerkbait. Paired with my Assassin. Works great, feels great. Would definitely recommend this setup.*

I am intrigued by things Japanese, having lived there for a short time about 20 years ago. I am an Australian/American living in Dallas. I am also 72 years old but, most importantly, I do not have an index finger on my dominant right hand. I am not an angler, but I love to cook and eat the results of successful fly fishing. With a missing index finger, can I still cast or do I have to try left handed for the start?

Hi Ian, absolutely. You can grip the rod in a variety of ways that will work best for you. The index finger is primarily used here to keep the rod from going too far back on the backcast. Ideally you want to stop your backcast with the rod pointed straight up. So just be aware of that and you will be fine. Thanks and have fun!

Great video Daniel. I just had a co-worker introduce me to Tenkara fishing and I cannot wait to try it out. I love the simplicity of it, compared to other types of fishing. Plus, I live in Idaho so I have many good spots to fish!
Where are you from Daniel? I can't quite make out your accent.

I'm so ready to purchase the complete set Sato Rod + Kit but need some justification as to why I should spend $300 vs. spending $91 on the Wild Water Fly Fishing 12' Tenkara starter package........just asking honestly....I really do like everything I've seen from Tenkara USA and have spent a lot of money on conventional fly fishing equipment.

Ordered my Tenkara USA Sato today ... to say the least, I'm pretty pscyhed to try Tenkara. I will be hitting some of my usual favorite spots here in El Portal area, but at the end of April ... Yosemite. I will be happy to share some photos when I get them. ;-)

Peter Edwards I use tenkara rods for both shallow and deep water...slow and fast water. It works for everything.

In Merica we call this Cane Pole fly fishing. This aint something we just learned this from the Japanese. My Ole man been fly fishing like this with a cane pole in the deep south of Arkasas back when he was a kid.

You pronounce tenkara correctly. Most people don’t do that!

Most of the people you’re referring to probably just pronounce it like they’re not native Japanese…
