Just watching your video and waiting through the long build up for your WTF?! reactions! I reckon there should be about 4 or 5 in total for this reaction! But I know you're gonna be smiling too (Babymetal do that to us all). As for info on this song, here's a bit. When People ask if Babymetal are 'really' Metal, I tell them that Babymetal crucified their lead singer live on stage as her 16th birthday treat while 10,000 fans screamed "Death! Death! Death!" and a statue of the virgin mary crumbled behind her and that, yes, they are pretty fucking Metal. The lyrics are simple - they spell out B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L and then shout out what sounds like 'Death' but is the Japanese form of 'to be', or I/You/They are' - Desu. So, the lyrics are "I am Babymetal" and, er, that's it. Babymetal often like to play on Japanese words that sound like something in English. As the word Desu has a silent 'u' and the 's' is spoken with the tongue between the teeth, it sounds like 'Death'. And that's that explained! Now let's see what joy Babymetal brought you today...hee hee hee....down the Fox Hole we go....
#notacult (honest). Your face when they put Su on the cross was great - they only crucify her on special occasions - and what better way to celebrate your 16th birthday? Perhaps a little explanation will help. Lyrics - "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L" "Sumetal desu", "Yuimetal desu", "Moametal desu", "BABYMETAL desu" "Death death death death death death..." etc Desu (the U is silent so it sounds like the English word death, especially if you stick your tongue out slightly as you say it) pretty much means "I am, you are, we are" so they were introducing themselves - like you might introduce yourself in Japan as "T-Mac desu". More usually this would have been the opening number (but without the theatrics). On this (and a couple of other) occasion they used it to close the show. It was all about Su sacrificing herself and giving up her mortal life as a human and Idol pop star to be reborn as a metal Goddess (yeah I know, just go along with it). There were a couple of homages to Metallica in this - first the same drum rhythm as Metallica's 'One' and at the end the statue breaking apart, similar to Metallica's 'Justice For All' statue from their tour in 1989.
#notacult Welcome to the foxhole. Welcome to The One. This was the singers 16th birthday. For her 20th she was crucified again in a floating ring of fire. Always more BabyMetal forever! :)

I'm assuming you understand know why when some people question wether BABYMETAL is metal we cringe ? How more metal can this get ? I think people will tell you the double meaning of DEATH by BABYMETAL. They're basically using a play-on-words with english to introduce themselves.ù People who say that BABYMETAL isn't metal need their ears and eyes checked asap. As a 32 years old metalhead who primarily listens to metalcore, this hits right where it needs to hit. Edit : and yes, this was the end of their concert, eventough they usually would start their concerts with this song as the intro. You know, as a way to shut the haters up about 'is it metal or not'. :)
Death is sort of play with words. The title is desu (the u is a silent vocal in this) and means "i am" or "we are" ... they are pronouncing themselves in this song. Su-metal des means i am Su -Metal and so on...
The song is called 'Death'. But its the first song on the first album and what they are saying is 'BabyMetal Des'. 'Des' being the term for 'I am'/''We are'. So the first song on the first album, the whole song is "We are BabyMetal". "Su-Metal Des" (I am Su-Metal), "Yui-Metal Des" (I am Yui-Metal), "Moa-Metal Des" (I am Moa-Metal) "BabyMetal Des" (I/We are BabyMetal). It sets up the whole idea of 'The One' and that BabyMetal was summoned by the Fox God and Metal God to unite the world using the Power of Heavy Metal.
Actually, she had just done her singing the previous song, just her on stage with piano music. That was the Legend 1997 version of Akatsuki, the 'unfinished' version of that song. How about reacting to: Babymetal Akatsuki - Budokan ?
Oy mate relax! Lol. Babymetal Death used to be their standard show opener without the extended ritualistic antics you witnessed. This version was at the end of their show which marked Sumetal's crucifixion as a rebirth - resurrection. 1997 is Su [Suzuka] Nakamoto's real birth year. She was born 20 - 12 - 1997. The large statue looks like the Virgin Mary but it's actually of Sumetal. Her statue's collapse represented her death and renewal. It ties into the Babymetal legends which are many. No they are not a Cult. That act was all in jest, and good fun mate. Cheers!
If one should find themselves in the frog pit, appeal to MoaMetal who is the frog whisperer. The mercies of Moa may be earned through offerings of fried chicken.
You weren't at all curious as to why they crucified Su? Why they put a neck-brace on her? Nothing to say about the performance? Just that you were waiting for Su to sing... This performance is pure theatre. A spectacle. Something worthy of comment... Oh well.
Death and rebirth are staples of Japanese storytelling. This is not Su's first crucifixion. She will be reborn. And the cross most likely symbolizes Okuni, the woman who originated Kabuki. She wore a cross. I have heard other female pop stars state they wore crosses in homage to Okuni. Still a heck of a show. There is a lot to unpack here. Japanese pronounce the English word Death the same way they pronounce the Japanese verb To Be, Desu (they don't say the U usually). There is something fundamentally wrong with a crowd chanting "death" at the girls, and that's part of the point. Babymetal does not take the industry too seriously, and that is on display here.
fyi,.. the neckbrace are tribute to Yoshiki (drummer-pianis) X-Japan, who's broke his neck bcoz too much headbanging while drumming, so he must wore a neck brace to avoid more damage. the beat at the start are tribute to Metallica songs "One" & the statue also a tribute to Metallica "And Justice For All" albums & live concert where the statue of justice breaks just like the Virgin Mary Statue that breaks at the end of this song.
Among all the explanation, maybe you must understand another curious fact Babymetal as you probably know, borns as a sub-unit of the idol group Sakura Gakuin. And idol in those groups, the boys and girls who work in idol groups have a date of expiry. Typically only the ones who are not finish they secondary education yet are in those groups (and you must pass grades, and with a good grades or you can be expelled from the group), there is also an age limitation. So the problem here is that Suzuka have reach their graduation in high school, and for this reason she can not continue as a Sakura Gakuin member. Usually after this moment, if your career as an idol have a great success, you can continue with the label with another contract or simply leave the label, continue your studies or anything you like. Suzuka´s older sister, Himeka Nakamoto was also in another idol group: Nogizaka46 but when they graduate, she enrolled into the Faculty of Human Sciences e-School of Waseda University and now is working in this university. Being an idol does not guarantee you anything after you "graduate" and the idol groups have a constant member rotation. This theme try to symbolize the end of her live as an idol and the reborn as a main singer of now, a complete separate group from Sakura Gakuin. Yes, it´s a little radical but japanese can be sometimes like this
Best reaction to Su's scream ever! You win the internet! And as you were waiting for Su's voice but didn't get any then can I suggest you try this ballad from 2018, a beautiful solo from Su where she really gets to display her vocal talents. "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L. I am Su-Metal. I am YuiMetal. I am MoaMetal. We are BABYMETAL." Hi T-Mac! "BABYMETAL - DEATH" was usually played as their opener to introduce the girls and the group to the audience. The English word "death" spoken by a native Japanese speaker sounds like the Japanese word "desu" (silent u usually) which generally means "is/am/are", so this song is a whole play on words. However here at "Legend 1997" it was played as the closer. Su gets sacrificed to be reborn as a metal goddess on her 16th birthday. They've actually sacrificed Su a couple times, it's becoming a tradition! The song is also an homage to Metallica, specifically the song "One" with the opening guitars, and the "And Justice For All" tour where instead of a Lady Justice statue, they have a Mother Mary. ... anyways, do you have time to talk about our lord and savior the Fox God? We're totally not a cult, I swear!
