  • In this video, I do a 'live' setup of the Laser attachment for the Anycubic Mega Pro 2-in-1 3D Printer.
    I didn't have particularly high hopes for this laser and personally, it's not something I would use. The safety aspect also leaves a lot to be desired... BUT, it does work at least. I'm interested to know what other people would use it for?

    I guess the brown paper may be better to show the area of gray tones. White paper takes quite a bit energy to show anything. It goes either black or does nothing. I have still the glasses and the laser function untried because I dont trust the protection glasses are for right wavelength and thus I don't risk my eyesight. Probaply they are ok, but powerful laser can make damage to eye withouth any direct pointing. The default cable tie setup(or faulty teflon tube) hindered my filament flow in Pro version, but not in i3 mega S.

      Thank you:) the laser is certainly cool and sounds like you would have a good use for it! I'm sure they will refine the implementation. I do like it, but would rather a little more safety consideration. It would be nice if they could also provide (or at least sell separately) an enclosure for it, as the glasses don't protect anyone else in the room. It will be interesting to see how these 2 in 1 machines develop in the market.

    Amazing video but how do I engrave the small wood that comes with it

    • @CallumColes
      @CallumColes  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! To engrave the small piece of wood, you just need to tape the board to the bed and then get it started. You can use the test option before you start a laser job (can't remember exactly what it is called) to see the outline of the engrave area so you know where you need to place the wood.

    There are multiple sets of recommended settings from Anycubic included on the SD card it comes with, including laser height, pixel size, laser intensity, and 2 picture mirror settings. You didn't try any of the recommended settings? You carved into your printer bed.

    • @CallumColes
      @CallumColes  2 года назад

      From memory, there were only 3 laser-related files on the SD card I received, all BMP files. It's possible they've since added more recommendations as a result of user feedback, which would be good!
      Carved into the printer bed is a bit of an overstatement lol, could barely cut butter with that thing. Even so though, I really don't think open laser engravers are a good idea, just asking for trouble.

Do you have any thoughts on leveling the bed manually as opposed auto leveling systems? Any issues with the auto leveling ones or is manual more precise? • @CallumColes
      @CallumColes  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment and sub, much appreciated.
      In terms of auto-bed levelling, I think it is overrated for small printers tbh, it really is not too much trouble to manually level a bed in my opinion (I have a video on manual bed levelling, so you can judge the effort required).
      For larger beds, say 300mm+, there will be greater variation, so manual levelling becomes more difficult and some levelling assistance can be beneficial. However, a thicker first layer can help compensate hardware variations, so even in this instance, is not crucial.

    ok Callum, will the printer handle infused metal filaments such as bronze or brass?
    is the laser powerful enough to etch the copper on PC boards for electronics?
    I can't find a definite answer on their web site. as you can see even though you may not understand or have a use for an attachment others might so be careful not to dismiss a feature even if you don't have a use for it. good review, stay healthy, Russ

    • @CallumColes
      @CallumColes  2 года назад

      Hi Russell
      Yes the printer would be fine with infused metal filaments, that's more a case of requiring a hardened nozzle (and preferably larger than 0.4mm).
      The laser is (supposedly) 1W. Here I've found a successful experiment with a 2.5W laser: ruclips.net/video/1hFNj86L7sk/видео.html&ab_channel=MarcoReps so yes you probably could get something working with this printer, albeit slower than the linked video.
      My dismissal of the feature was primarily due to the fact you could get a dedicated laser engraver and a standard printer, for around the same price as this machine. Given a dedicated unit would almost definitely out perform the laser capabilities of this machine, that is the route I would recommend. That said, if you do opt for this printer, I'd love to know how you get on.
      Thanks for watching and for your comment, have a good weekend:)

    XD sorry finally found this after so many videos too look through could you show where too get more files and how too convert them too work also.
    How too adjust the print size for like a round peice of wood

    • @CallumColes
      @CallumColes  2 года назад +1

      The laser engraver works with image files in the BMP (Bitmap) format. So any image added to the SD card in that format should show up for you to select and engrave.
      To find more things to engrave just do a google search for whatever image you are after, then a separate google search for 'convert jpg/png to bitmap'. Alternatively, if you're on windows you can open the image you have downloaded in Paint and export to bitmap.
      The engraver max size is 220 x 140mm, so the aspect ratio of 11:7 will maximise the build space. With an image of that aspect ratio setup, you should be able to work out the right proportions of the image to use for your desired laser size.
      I no longer have this printer so that's about the extent of the help I can provide, but hope it helps get you going in the right direction:)

    • @CallumColes
      @CallumColes  2 года назад

      If it doesn't scale up, then perhaps a higher resolution image will be needed. I suspect the software maps pixels in the image to physical space. Pretty sure this would work yes, you'd probably want to set the z height to the max 100mm (approx 50mm above your 4x2) and then adjust the focus accordingly.
