I've found that "S" needles are just as, if not more effective and easier to use than a straight needle, especially in cold weather or with wet or sweaty hands. I keep a 2 1/2" and 4" one in my kit, which is in an old candy tin about the size of an altoids tin but longer. The S needles are hardened and have a triangular point like a sail needle as well as some jimping on both side for better grip. Another addition I keep is two sewing machine needles that can be used like a mini stitching awl. I also keep regular bonded poly thread and 40 or 50lb braided fishing line for heavy duty applications which is wrapped around an old credit card that can be scraped to get fire starter shavings, some large saftey pins, a couple of buttons, other assorted needles all kept on a piece of imitation chamois that can also be used as fire starter by cutting off a small piece and scraping with a knife to fluff the fibers. Oh, and I keep a pair of folding scissors and about 30 ft of twisted no.36 bank line which can be separated to be used as smaller cordage, thread and fire starter. In this tin is also a small.fire kit with ferro rod, stormproof matches, a mini bic, a small.piece of fatwood, some waxed cosmetic pads, a sample sized eyedrops bottle with alcohol in it that can be use as an accelerant and for first aid, two pieces of drinking straw-one with sugar and the other with potassium permanganate(for fire starting and water and wound disinfection and a strip of aquatabs and a single edged razor blade

Good tip, thanks. Along with a hand forged sail needle you will want to get an S needle from Tandy Leather. Those S needles will stitch through just about anything, where a sail needle will struggle.

Once I dropped my pack to do a peak hike, came back, and a marmot had eaten a shoulder strap and some of the hip belt structure. It was day 1 of a 4 day trip. I was able to do the repair using regular needles but a bigger needle would have been very helpful. I used cordage, thread, closed cell foam, and a couple rolls of athletic tape. The repair held fine for well over a year of real use until I got around to machine sewing it properly with real fabric. I'd better order some sail needles.

What type of thread are you using?

Idk what he's using, but I hear nylon or kevlar are good choices for field repairs.
