I wasn't aware that one was ever in the planning, agree the 747 obviously outsold the 380 by a huge amount, the 747 was released in a different era of air transportation, maybe if the 380 was released 10 years earlier it would of been more of a success. Can't remember the last time I saw a passenger 747 flying, I did however spot 4 A380 overflies on Sunday, didn't see a 777X despite its large order list, oh silly me it's not flying yet.

They're only winglets when it's taxiing on the ramp. The cooler part is watching them fold out into a (more) giant wing as the aircraft prepares for takeoff.
Data point to ponder: the OG 747 went from first flight to EIS in 347 days. As of this writing, 18 May 2024, the average time from first flight of the 737 Max 7, 737 Max 10, and 777-9X, is 1,632 days, with no end to certification, or EIS, in sight or even predicted.

They are not winglets, its folding (raked) wingtip to fit inside the standard "box" at airport parking. Folding gives the option of using standard gates to satisfy wingtip clearance rules.

@@l2etranger I disagree. That's a 2-engine jumbo jet! The bigger the engines, the better! And, they aren't any bigger than the ones on the A380, are they...?

But you must admit it was quite a ride to dream of these unreal possibilities. Avgeeks are all over the place these days, but I met a long time ago a retired GE engineer who worked in the neighborhood's factory, and he enjoyed the conversation we had about the engines maker.

A useless aircraft. Give it time and the manufacturing problems will surface. The 767 was the beast of the skies

I'm not sure what it is, but something just always seems to look "off" about this aircraft. Not sure if it's the proportions or the wing conformation or what but it looks awkward to me. I much prefer the A350 in terms of aesthetic appeal.

First off, it's the engine size more than like. Secondly, hater! Lol coming all this way to crap on our turf. Keep that A350 in the trash.

cjames0723 Totally agree, 777x side on looks ok but obviously still a 30 year old design, but from the front the wings look very odd they are obviously have a large span but don't carry it off like the A380, the A350-1000 more streamlined and looks perfect, but still not as perfect as the A340-600 now that's what you call a magnificent looking aircraft with exactly the right proportions😉

Yes, this is due to the lack of "clean sheet" design, which is what the A350 was. Sadly, Boeing is at a disadvantage when it comes to airframe innovation.

The wrong airplane at the wrong time. Oversized. This project is a white whale. Folding wings, what could possibly go wrong?

Airlines are putting A380s back into service, because they need the capacity. The 777X is the right plane. Folding wings have been on planes since the 1930s and beyond.
