One of my favourite bands - the energy their music generated was unforgettable. Tony is an incredible guitarist - one of the greats
Seen the Groundhogs so many times over the years and they never disappointed.RIP Tony S McPhee.
Same always amazing to watch
Another band who put out an incredible amount of quality music in a relatively short period of time......saw them many times in the early 70's.....their music lives on......
Totally underrated guitar virtuoso, wish I had seen them, one of my favourite tracks of the Hogs
Tony passed on leaving a legacy of brilliant songs like this one. Only saw him live once but that was a performance that will never be forgotten at the George Roby in Finsbury Park about 25 years ago.
Absolutely fantastic
What a beautiful underated band
Saw Groundhogs several times in the 70's then again a few years ago in the Eel Pie Club in London, after Tony McPhee had taught himself to sing & play again after a stroke, with his wife on support vocal the band were excellent. I got a photo with Tony, who is a lovely man & very under-rated as a guitarist.
I love this band so much. Tony McPhee is GREAT. Thanks.
What a band! RIP TONY TS MCPHEE
superb guitarist
Amazing underrated band🤘
They will always be remembered and appreciated by the many who mattered. The celebrity plaudits don't mean sh*t anymore❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Great! One of my favourite Hog songs from that period.
Saw TS several times over a 10 day period in London mid 70's. Met in the bar after and before gigs . What a brilliant guy...Pete bass and Ken drums. Met Ken a few years back on his Groundhogs version tour. The songs the sounds original. If the Yanks had the blues....Tony TS McPhee stole them. Love you forever Fender Gibson SG McPhee.......Andy (Mayor of Stamford)
I am a massive fan of The Hogs/Mcphee great to see some footage from this era must be a one off
Just found this on the Tube. Absolutely brilliant - From the Solid album.
Check out thank Christ for the bomb
And black diamond
Both equally fantastic
I want this played at my wedding
I'm gonna push these guys in my next book.
Wonderful vid, must've been a great gig!!! Good to hear TS actually singing - his voice is one of the Hogs' USPs!!!
I started following the Hogs in the 70s great band powerful
I am sitting here with Pete Cruickshank reminiscing and jamming as we prepare for some gigs. He is very grateful for all the fantastic comments. He still has that Zemaitis!
Great drumming and bass playing also. This band should have been huge.Evicted once for playing Hogwash too loud ! true !!
Looks and feels like early metal.
Thanks a lot! This took place six days before my birth.
Nice too see a Groundhogs live performance here on YT!
Love the Hogs! Seen 'em back in 1972, opening for Humble Pie!...Great concert that prompted me to buy the existing albums at that time and followed them ever since...Good health to Tony and many more years and shows to come!
first band i ever saw age 15 in 75, never forgot it,Slough community centre of all places, went on way longer than planned,no way i was leaving, missed train home, had to call angry parent to get home, hanks Tony,a treasured memory
I was there and the Hogs where brilliant
Rest in Peace soul man 🎸
Extraordinary footage of the Groundhogs at London's Marquee club (12th May 1974) and broadcast on the BBC's 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' (25th June 1974). Believed to have been wiped, so I just don't know where this has come from. Possibly a German TV rock show? Line-up - Tony McPhee (guitar/vocals), Pete Cruickshank (bass) and Clive Brooks (drums). I was at this gig, so fantastic to see this again after 39 years.
Paul Freestone ('Eccentric Man: A Biography & Discography of Tony McPhee')
Solid is a great album. It doesn't have a weak track.
I agree, superb songwriting, playing and production. It's the first album I think of playing when I want to listen to the Hogs
First time l saw this band ,in the top of crouded pub in highwickome they called blues loft so much going on in such a small venue
"Solid" was a really good Groundhogs album.😎👌
The Rev. T. S. McPhee at his best!!! Everything from Scratching the Surface onwards is in my collection of records I will NEVER sell!
Sadly i had to sell my vinyls....but the songs live on..
Great driving rhythm McPhee was a master of blues guitar .
RIP dear Tony
The English Hendrix on top playing, feedback & effects form. Clive & Pete supplying sturdy foundations.
Watched them with my beau many years ago at the Black Prince in Bexley amongst other places, Great music.
This line-up made two top albums in Hogwash and Solid.
Solid. This is not the classic line up with Ken Pustelnik on drums but still makes it. Saw them in about 1972 in a small club above a pub the Red Lion Leytonstone.
I am so sorry to have just read in wikipedia that Clive Brooks died 5-5-17.
Saw Tony playing solo in kings head Magdalen st in early 90s
Tony was the grand farther of grunge, never forgotten keep hugging the hog.
Tony's innovative Cadec Desk kicks in @ 4.15. Innovative multi-effects combo console. TS ahead of his time as ever.
The device is an EMS Synthi HiFly, made by the EMS company who also made synths that Pink Floyd (amongst others) used. The Cadec desk that gets mentioned was actually Tonys mixing console that he had in his home studio in Haverhill, Suffolk. This can be heard in action on the albums "Solid" and "The Two Sides Of Tony TS McPhee" . That studio setup was sold when he got divorced in the late seventies unfortunately. Check out the song "Alimony, All My Money" if you can find it online!
I missed this gig by one week when I was a kid visiting London. I was well aware of the Groundhogs.
It's 2021, that "solid" record I bought in'75 stills sounds "now"!!
on a whim decided to see if any new Groundhogs live vids had been posted after watching a Gracious live at Leeds vid.Wow - this is as devastating as I knew it would be.All time greatest bands here.
pity there's so little video of the hogs. tony is one of the best ever!
fer sure...and is it the "live at astoria" that is all jazzed with the lighting?
one of the best bands from my youth
very good.........................................................
HAMMER immer noch......... 3mal live gesehn in den 90ern
If TS's magnificent guitar work here were to be re-released as a "newly-discovered Hendrix tape"; I doubt even many music afficionados would dare to question it. Really really under-rated - I hate to say it but Tony may well have got a lot more recognition if he was black.
saw em Memphis back in the day...timeless.....
Great post!!! Been a big fan since early days.So underrated.'Hogwash' was a masterpiece imo.Been trying to find the video bio Tony released a few yrs back but can't find to play on U.S. format. Thanks for sharing this slice of history.
This is real music
Nothing plastic about this performance
Beatles, stones would have been jealous
Rarer than rocking horse pooh!
many thanks for this
Mainstay of the 70's. Much underappreciated I think.
Winter Gardens, Penzance, early 70's, Split album, brilliant.
Poor sound quality, poor picture quality, BUT still great! Gives a flavour of what The Groundhogs were in the early Seventies, when I saw them perform numerous times - great times!!!!! ( I wish I could have them back)
Poor Picture/Sound Quality??? Are you Kidding????
Poor quality? What BS
I think one of the saddest things is when fresh from trip to Europe the hogs stopped off at a pub in Hove to play a gig. Sparse attendance, the pub locals seemed more interested in darts than the great music being played and didn't take any notice. I wanted to say 'do you know who this is?' But being Brighton they wouldn't of known. Not trendy enough.
And that, Lemmy, is how you should have done it.
RIP TS.
Just remembered I think a mate of mine" PJ" was working for them at the time. Seem to remember blasting around the West End afterwards in a gold 3 litre Capri, those were the days.
a big helping of early 70's gritty growly psychedelic bluesy hard rock goodness
Seen them live in the 70s in blackwood south wales amazing performance
Great stuff.
RIP Clive Brooks (drummer) A sad day 5/5/2017
The best drummer the hogs ever had
A VERY sad day.
Saw them many tie at the farx club Southall. always a great night
The white Hendrix holds forth.
ruclips.net/video/U2VsBTJ8oeU/видео.html 👍🏻👍🏻😊
Rhythm and blues roots.

Whoa! '70s Groundhogs video!
Super Legends!!!!
Got a feeling I was there
Good to be reminded how spot on Tony's playing used to be. That SG must be somewhere!!
It was stolen at a gig in Scotland in 1986
It was stolen at a gig in Scotland in 1986
Bl**dy brilliant.
MORE!
Hogs ✌️✌️✌️👍👍👍👍
that's what a superfuzz sounds like
Wally!
😂😂😂 Superunknown 🎩
This track…. 1974, Motörhead formed 1975? I’m fascinated that Lemmy’s vocal style and approach may have garnered something from TS ? Thoughts?
Are there more video songs from this show? This is Wonderful!!!
I used to play in a band with Pete Cruickshank for around 20 years and both he and Ken still play, although not together. Pete comes up to Cumbria once a year with his band Basketcase(BSE).. and still does a few Groundhog numbers!! Check them out on Facebook if you are interested :)
ruclips.net/video/U2VsBTJ8oeU/видео.html Mark, that’s awesome 👍🏻👍🏻
This recorded probably not long before they did their 74 "farewell gig" at Kings Cross that was incredibly unfairly reviewed by some jerk at the NME.
Clive Brooks on drums here.
The review from melody maker was pretty unfair as well and they made a point of blasting the hogs every chance they got
That gig was in an old Cinema and it was VERY cold in there. TS was rubbing his hands together. It wasn't their best gig I have to say, at least compared to others that I saw them perform. Then again there was a downbeat atmosphere because of the split, I'm not sure they were all into it - and it was COLD! Anyone remember?
This was recorded in the spring of 1974 just before "Solid " was released. The King Cross gig was April 1975/Glad to communicate with someone who saw that show.Shame it wasnt up to par
Oh yeah, vividly recall seeing fans breath in the air. Chilling experience!
In the new Johnny English film, the press are referred to as a tsunami of tosspots.
thanks for u/l this not alot of video of the hogs about
Think that's what they call Power Play
Sounds like this band heavily influenced Motorhead.
Rare video
the album Solid came out that year
if this is really from 1974
Grandi
I think I was at this gig, mind you in the early 70's my mates and I followed the Hogs around, usually supported by Stray, saw them all over London. Brilliant band. Where did you get this??? is there more???
I think this was shown on The Old Grey Whistle Test, and Bob Harris cited that it was recorded at The Marquee, if I remember correctly.
Yes, you can see it on the back wall, fantastic the bass and drums so tight, Clive Brooks had just joined them from Egg after Ken Pustelnik had left.
@@marshall2150 Yes, it was broadcast on OGWT (25/6/74) and recorded at the Marquee (12/5/74). I was there.
I saw them at The Winning Post Twickenham in 1974. They were great. Does anybody know if Tony McPhee is still alive?
He is very much alive but Ill health has dogged him over the years which is why he no longer tours
Better than Motorhead....... and that's sacralige!
A living god among us mere mortals
You can see where wishbone Ash got their influence for blown free
