    grew up about 2 mins walk from the John Elder Statue. We called that area in Elder Park "the banana' because of the crescent shaped gardens on either side of the statue. Never knew what he was he was leaning on until now. So as well as being a shipbuilding pioneer, he invented the compound steam engine ! Live and learn. Thank you.

    In 1900, 40% of all shipping by tonnage was built in Britain. Once, we were giants.
